100% agreed here, and that's the only reason why I think we don't go after a big gun forward. Granlund / Foligno / Jenner / other, sure, but no one larger.

If we add I keep thinking about Ekholm. Our only chance here is to defend better and hope we can bring down the total goals scored.

I can see it. They can make the expansion draft work that way too. I'd much rather a Dermott + secondary assets (our 1st, lesser prospects) than one of our big 4 though.

Does Forsberg play a tougher/playoff style game? I never associated him with that style but haven't watched him much. We need a top 6 winger willing to get dirty.

Edit: not even considering the cap in this question

Where are you guys finding the cap room for Forsberg next season and beyond?

I won't trade any futures right now, unless it's for a longer term goalie upgrade. Matthews always start the season like he's the best player in the world, then around this point in the season, disappears. The team follows in similar style. I thought this year would be different, but now I'm not sure. I think we should wait until closer to the trade deadline to see what this team really is.

On the bright side, it shouldn't be hard to match salaries in any trade when you can include Anderson as cap ballast.

Hyman's raise might absorb part of Kerfoot's 3.5, but it better not take the whole thing. That would put Hyman at 5.75, which is too much even for me.
Keeping in mind that Ketfoots replacement needs a salary too.

Removing Andersen from this team should've been a priority in the off-season, addition by subtraction. No excuses.

Overall I'm a fan of Dubas but he is rightfully going to some heat for the goaltending situation.

What is the protection strategy for the Leafs? I have no idea how it works this time around.

That's where guys like Nick Robertson and Joey Anderson become valuable. Those two combined with Sandin and Liljegren should give us 4 league minimum replacements coming into the mix next year.

Bring those guys in, and you can add a 6.0 million dollar guy and still have like 2 to 2.5 to find a partner for Jack Campbell.

I would agree, but the only thing is I don't know who we could have got.

I am not a fan of that Markstrom contract and would rather give Campbell a chance. Lehner has been iffy so far too, and he wanted to stay in Vegas. Holtby has been bad. Murray has been worse.

You are pretty much down to Allen, Dubnyk, and Talbot... And giving Andersen a second chance was probably a better option.

At least with Andersen you get out of the contract and you are not saddled with anything going forward, especially with expansion potentially making some good goalies available. It just sucks that he had to be this bad, which was unimaginable even with last year's play. Even last year's play would probably give us a comfortable lead in the division right now.

They should quietly pull the irons out of the fire on the all-in deals, and limit themselves to hockey deals that help medium and long term. With goaltending being irreparable at this point in the season, it's extremely dangerous to empty the cupboard and not have any ammunition in the offseason to retool. Let's just ride it out with this group and see how far they get. Dial down the expectations. I don't want them jeopardizing future cup runs.

Tend to agree. I don’t believe in or have faith in this core at all so I wouldn’t make any rental deals, in fact I’d go the opposite and deal off Andersen for futures, ride Campbell, and if by some miracle removing Andersen helps heal the core, it’s a bonus.

I wouldn't be worried about the core, but we aren't going to win if we need 5 goals a game. The rest of the team deserves help. Andersen does not.

Freddy Andersen + Rasanen + 2022 4th + 2022 7th for Devin Dubnyk retained down to 25%,

Sharks get: Andersen + 2022 4th for Dubnyk@50% retained. Maybe andersen plays well and they buy out jones and go with him in the future

the team that retains another 50% on Dubnyk gets Rasanen +2022 7th.

Andersen is 5M out while we get Dubnyk (original cap hit 4.33M to 1,083,250) save almost 4M which should be enough to add rakell or Ekholm outright so screw paying more for retention.

Campbell
Dubnyk
Hutchinson

should be good enough that it wont cost us until 3rd round at which point i wont give a f***, will take 2 series wins happily and see if the team can beat an elite team in the conference finals even if the goaltending falters
