This effectively tells me that when Taylor Hall is on the ice, they are effectively a crash and bang/deflections off of defensive point shots type of team... and they don't have too many great crash and bang kind of players.

Also their big minute eaters are all tools no toolbox players. Hall, Risto, Staal, Montour all have some of the worst IQ to physical talent ratios in the league. That kind of thing gets exposed when they have by far the worst coaching in the league and no on-ice field general type players other than maybe Reinhart.

Hall is not a bad player but the stench of losing has followed him pretty much everywhere. He's not a consistent taking the charge player and probably not worth the cost.

I still see a lot of potential with Rasmus Ristolainen though. He's got all the tools. With the right coaching and development, he can be a top 4 RHD.

Risto is an interesting one... the challenge being his cap hit, and at 26, how much development is there? Sure, there are some intriguing things there, but so far he's kind of the guy you want to shelter, and be a PP specialist. I could see him being much more useful away from Buffalo, but how much are you willing to gamble on that?

If you are the Leafs, you are hoping that he's an upgrade on Holl... and at half the cap hit, maybe it's worth it? But you wouldn't be willing to give much more than Holl and a mid to late round pick for that risk, and I can't see Buffalo doing that, unless they just want to completely blow it up.

Career 10.1 shooting percentage, has only shot over 10% once since 2013-14. He's just not a great goal scorer. He has a lower shooting percentage than all of our top-six regulars, yet takes more shots than all of them except Matthews. Hall would replacing some of our good shots with his own poor shots, lowering the efficiency of our top-six.

The deeper you dig on Hall, the less attractive he is.

We would be getting him primarily to transition the puck and use his speed to create high danger chances. It's actually the complete opposite. Hall does a lot of things that don't show up on the box score stats. His underlying and micro stat profile is fantastic though, and you're getting him at a discount because he's not putting up the points.

Hall is not even close to low IQ.

Hall is an elite level player at pretty much everything besides finishing, which has been garbage this year. If that rebounds, he could be a huge addition. Even if not, he will likely still be worth the deflated asking price for him. I would say he's like an extreme version of Mikheyev

Exactly. IIRC he has some of the highest percentages of passes to high-danger areas in the league. Imagine that player profile with one of the best net front goal scorers in Nylander.

He's a high-volume shooter despite relatively weak finishing ability outside of his MVP outlier year with the Devils.

He's not my #1 choice, but if the centrepiece is less than a 1st rounder for him, it's worthwhile.

Yup exactly. His forechecking is very underrated too. I think he would be the perfect compliment to JT and WN.

To me he has the same thing as Kessel, he makes good micro decisions but doesn't read the macro play well. Clever rather than smart. The thing he has over Kessel is that he has the size and skillset to force plays that aren't there and get away with it more often. It won't hurt him on a team with a solid structure but he ends up becoming an ineffective puck hog in situations like Buffalo and Edmonton.

Yes - people ought to think of him as a playmaker who can setup JT and Willy rather than thinking of him as a sniper who will look to shoot every chance he gets. Maybe he's reduced to that in Buffalo, but that's not what he'd bring here.

I love how “Toronto’s Top Prospect” cracks the top 10 of TSN’s trade bait list.

I mean, his possession stats are great, defensively he's always been poor, and always had a poor GA/60.. and he can't shoot anymore. Sounds like a more expensive Mikheyev, with better possession, but worse defensively.
