Why would a rebuilding team trade their first for a player 1 year away from free agency?

They would obviously be hoping to extend him to help them well into the future. They've got a lot of nice young, up-and-coming pieces, as well as money coming off the cap. I think they'd take a prime Morgan Reilly for 6-7 years, with the hope that they're competing by year 3'ish with him...

I like their young core with Zegras, Drysdale, Cormier, Terry, etc and they're going to have 26+ million coming off the books with Getzlaf, Kessler, Rackell, Manson, Heinan, etc. Over the next couple years. They're the type of team that could pay Reilly 7.5 × 6 and go with a core of Lindholm, Reilly, Fowler and Drysdale, in front of Gibson. That's a GREAT start to a backend and lots of money to build up a young forward core to play around them.

For
Granlund-Ekholm-Haula with retention

*Morgan Reilly is not for sale

Not in season he is not, but there is no reality in which Toronto can afford to pay Ekholm, Muzzin, Brodie and Reilly, without gutting forward depth in coming years. Something has to give and if Reilly wants 7.5 million+, at the same time you are trying to extend Ekholm for around the same amount you gave Muzzin (which is what he's worth), the money doesn't add up... Something has to give.

You don't pay the premium price to add a retained Ekholm, IMO, for 1.5 years of control. You only make that trade if you think you can sign him to a reasonable extension. Not an easy decision.

Rebuilding teams don’t trade lottery picks for guys just hoping they will resign them. And before you say we can let them talk to Reilly first....
Why would Morgan agree to that? If we aren’t gonna resign him why would he limit himself to one team, especially one that is rebuilding. He spent years here with this team as it was rebuilding and just as the team starts to look like a contender they want to trade him to another rebuilding team in your senario. At that point wouldn’t he be best to just wait for free agency and chose where ever he wants to go?

Could he be traded after the Cup Final and before having to submit a protected list?

I think so. IIRC, the protected lists were submitted just a few days prior to the VGK expansion draft.

Than I really see no danger in adding Ekholm. We could shop one of Reilly, Ekholm, Holl or Dermott for picks to recoup a portion of the acquisition cost.

I don't think there would be much danger in adding Ekholm unless it absolutely detracted from the team's future. I hope that all of Rielly, Ekholm, Holl and Dermott have more trade value than just a pick though. I doubt that the expansion draft gets in the way of making a trade for Ekholm.

I feel like a lot of people value worrying about the expansion draft over trying to win a stanley cup. This isn't to say to completely ignore it but...

That's fair. I admit to being guilty of such myself at times. It might have something to do with the team's situation being vastly different from the previous expansion draft.

Nor am I. I was just throwing a name out there. Could be a number of guys for about 2.5 million (in this market) that could fit there....

15.5 million out...
Reilly = 5.0
Anderson = 5.0
Kerfoot = 3.5
Holl = 2.0

15.25 million in...
Rackell = 3.75
Granlund = 3.75
Hyman Extension = 2.0
Ekholm (50%) = 1.9
1A Goalie = 3.0
Sandin: 900k

I really don't want to be "that guy" but if you're going to put Rakell in 95% of the posts you make on this board, can you at least spell his name right.

Fair point. Genuinely thought it had a C in it.

For the record, I'm interested in other players than Rakell, I simply want a legitimate 1st line winger to play with Matthews, opposite Marner... The problem is price and finding a guy that is on a sweetheart contract.

There is definitely some truth to that. And although I do agree that we should go for it, I really do not view this year as our only opportunity like some think. Just because we are in a division w/o TB and BOS. Truth is, trading one of the big 4 prospects (Amirov, Lilly, Sandy, Robby) does not make much sense to me. We will need those high end prospects w/ ELC deals in the years that follow this season. I recognize why some may feel like we can afford to lose 1 of them, I just don't view this year as our all or nothing season. We have our core locked in for the next 3/4 seasons, and if the big 4 prospects project to be the players we think they can be...we will be a very very tough team to beat for the next 3 years after this season. I am not in favor of swinging for the fences in the same regard as some on here. To me I would trade the 2021 and 2022 1st rounder's before any of the top 4 prospects, and if we had to part with a young player to me it would be a Dermott and B level prospects like hirvonen/miettenen/abruzesse/kokennen. Winning the Stanley cup is never easy, and this year will be no different. We could certainly benefit from a high end player coming to TO, it just isn't the end all be all if we don't. We still have a very good roster as is. And even if we did not add a single piece, we'd still be a top 5 favorite to win it all. Which is all you can really ask for

Hypothetically...

If the price was the following, would you do it?

To Nashville
Travis Dermott
Pierre Engvall
Rodion Amirov
Ronnie Hirvonen or Filip Hallander
1st round pick

To Toronto
Mikael Granlund
Mattias Ekholm (retained)

Hyman-Matthews-Marner
Granlund-Tavares-Nylander
Simmonds-Kerfoot-Mikheyev
Thornton-Spezza-Robertson
Barabanov

Reilly-Brodie
Muzzin-Ekholm
Holl-Bogosian
Liljegren

Is that good enough in your opinion to be worth moving the assets?
Nope. Way too much. Because after this season there will only be Ekholm left.

How about Juuse Saros and Ekholm. We can sweeten the pot by taking LTIR Brad Richardson and Luca Sbisa.

One guy I'm surprised no one is talking about is Dustin Brown. Has 20 pts in 29 games on a mediocre team. Can play on any line. Won 2 cups. I think he would be a good addition and provide great versatility.

Been saying this a lot. If you have a chance - which they most certainly do - you have to push in the chips. Not all of them, but you can't be afraid of improving the team at the expense of some futures.

Our starting goalie has a sub .900, and our saviour has played <10 games on the Leafs.

I understand wanting to take advantage of this season, but giving away 2-3 prospects to upgrade your D/F slightly while having the shakiest goaltending you've had in 5 years doesn't sound like the greatest asset management.

Sandin, Robertson, Liljegren, and Amirov are guys that will come in on their ELC for dirt cheap and compliment our core for 4-6 years as opposed to Rakell and Granlund who will play 15 games.

Granlund is the top target for the Leafs as we knew beforehand. Leafs from the Canadian teams are leading the charge of trying to get the 14 day quarantine reduced, so are waiting on clarity with that.

They also mention Nashville might be cooling a bit on pulling the trigger since they are suddenly only 4 points back.

I think people also get caught up too much in thinking there will be this clean cut opportunity in the future for the team to go "all in".

Fact is every season will have it's share of ups and downs and there will always be some degree of doubt

You gotta have the big narrative for the Disney movie if we win. Tampa adds gritty vets Coleman and Goodrow at the deadline, it finally pushes them over the top, Maroon goes back to back, Stamkos scores a goal while injured. I think there'd be a chunk of people who'd be disappointed if we won but only made some boring depth moves to get there. You need something to write "TOP 10 CRAZIEST DEADLINE MOVES YOU WONT BELIEVE" articles about.

Insider Trading: Mikael Granlund could be an ideal fit for the Toronto Maple Leafs - TSN.ca

We know the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a top-six forward as the April 12 trade deadline approaches. Do we have a favourite or a best fit for who they might be looking at?

Seravalli: Yes. After scouring the league, I believe the Leafs’ primary target at this point is Nashville Predators forward Mikael Granlund. Now, there have been a number of complicating factors that have popped up including, number one, the fact that the Leafs are waiting for some clarity from the NHL as to whether this 14-day quarantine will be reduced to seven days. They’ve actually been spearheading the charge among the seven Canadian teams to see whether that will happen or not. And number two, there seems to be some slight hesitation on the part of the Nashville Predators as the Chicago Blackhawks have come back to earth here as to whether they’re still in the race or not. So not sure if it’s fair to say that the Preds are pulling their players off of the market, it just seems like at this point they’re more wait and see mode rather than sell mode. And I can tell you this. The Toronto Maple Leafs, if things don’t get going soon, are going to have to consider Plan B, C or D on the list.

LeBrun: And keeping with the Predators, obviously the big name on the Trade Bait List from the Predators remains Mattias Ekholm, the most talented defenceman on the market. And he doesn’t come cheap according to people around the league that I’ve talked to over the last couple of days. It is a three-asset ask to get in on the bidding for Ekholm, which is a first-round pick, an elite prospect and a third asset which can take on different forms. That’s a lot, and part of that is that the Nashville Predators don’t have to trade Mattias Ekholm at this deadline. He’s signed through next season and really, there’s also the internal debate for Nashville; is their best offer at this deadline when contending teams believe they can get Ekholm for two playoff runs, or is it after the July expansion draft when teams who are interested in him no longer have to worry about their protection issues. So, a lot to consider here for Ekholm and the Predators closing in on April 12.
