Imagine this:

Simmonds - Matthews - Marner
Hall - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Engvall - Hyman
Thornton - Boyd - Spezza or Thornton - Spezza - Nieto/Ryan

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Ekholm - Bogosian
Dermott

Campbell
Andersen
Change out Staal for hall and i'm good with this ,,we literally don't have a C to fill in if one of the big 2 go down

Staal can do that or snipe from the left wing

Question:

After the Cup, does teams have the ability to trade players prior to having to submit their Seattle protective list?

This fact - should affect what we do or don’t do trade wise.

I assume this means either Andersen's not injured enough to qualify for LTIR or we're going way too hard big game hunting.

Pulling a few media rumblings together it certainly seems as if Dubas could be trying to land a bigger fish than some presume. I also won't be surprised if his Target isn't among the names commonly being batted around

Need some clarification.. How does retaining a players salary work? My understanding was a player's salary can only be retained up to 50%. So the cheapest Hall's salary could be for us is 4M. However unlimited amount of teams can retain up until 50% is retained.

Help me out here

NHL CBA FAQ - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

What is a retained salary transaction/trade

When a team trades a player, they have the option to retain a part of their salary (and cap hit). The team who retains the salary then pays the retained percentage of the salary, and also retains the percentage of the cap hit until the contract expires.
The following requirements must be met to retain salary:

1. The percentage retained cannot exceed 50 percent of the player’s salary (including all bonuses) and Salary Cap Hit.

2. The same percentage must be retained for both the player’s salary and Salary Cap Hit, and cannot be modified.

3. All teams are limited to a maximum of 3 retained salary contracts per season.

4. Teams cannot retain an aggregate amount of more than 15 percent of the Salary Cap Upper Limit.

5. Players’ contracts are limited to 2 retained salary transactions per contract.

Once a retained salary transcation has occurred, there are various limitations, such as:

• A team cannot reacquire a player whom they have retained salary from for a minimum of one year after the date of the transaction, or unless the player's contract expires or is terminated prior to the one-year date.

• All teams involved in a retained salary transaction will have cap implications if the contract is bought out or terminated.

• Teams who retain salary on a players contract, will have the full value of the cap hit act against the teams salary cap total, regardless of whether the player is reassigned to the minors by their current team.

Notable points from 31 Thoughts:

4. Toronto’s ready to strike. Wayne Simmonds’s return forced some roster machinations, but GM Kyle Dubas’s waiver activity is also about creating cap room. He knows how much he needs, and he’s making sure he’s got it. There were some Jonathan Quick rumours over the weekend. I don’t see it, even though I concede some circumstantial evidence: Quick’s fiery, competitive nature is the temperament Toronto likes; he’s tight with Jack Campbell; and the Leafs and Kings do deals together. However, he’s battled injuries, and, does it really make sense to put that 35-year-old body through a quarantine, then ramp him up in three weeks for critical games? Not to me, it doesn’t.

I do think Toronto’s checked around on goalies (Arizona makes sense), but, again, you have to know you can make a sensible trade, and that you’re getting a better option than what you have and a consistently healthier one. That’s not a long list.

10. On Nick Foligno: I’m not sure trading him is something the Blue Jackets want to do, even if he’s not extended by the deadline. A lot of emotion there.

Leafs can add anyone they want really at 25% of their salary. Just have to be willing to pay the prospect and futures price. And with Dubas’ comments about wanting to sustain long term success and not cup or bust this season I don’t think they do it

Hey Guys,

I came across a source which stated that Leafs are in fac the front runner for Ekholm.

Is this really true and valid? how would you guys feel about having him on the roster?

Interesting thanks. So any player can be retained up to 75%. Surprised you don't see more teams trying to do that

well one team can retain 50% and then you’d have to get a third team to retain 50% of that. So you’d have to get creative and it would be expensive and you need three to tango not just two so it’s hard to pull off. But of course money talks (in this case prospects and picks )

I think he would be the greatest TD get in my 48 years following this team.

He puts a layer of flak onto that D core for a deep run

It was CJ.

Said the other night during the pre-game (I believe) saying that a source close to Ekholm believes the Leafs are involved and very well may be the front runner to land Ekholm.

So it's not IS the front runner. but MAY be the front runner.

Friedman says he doesn't necessary agree with him though, so who really knows.

Friedman explained his opinion was more about he wasn't sure if the Leafs would use their assets on a d-man instead of a forward, and said CJ does have good intel.

My opinion on the Ekholm interest I think boils down to the Leafs seeing an opportunity to bolster their team in a one stop shop. They have obvious interest in Granlund, so I think this is a "let's increase our offer and maybe we can fit Ekholm as a big upgrade as well since he's available" and the Preds probably liked the interest shown from the Leafs in some capacity. Similar to the Muzzin + Campbell trade, but obviously on a bigger scale.

I think Dermott is probably one of the primary assets offered in this, among obviously other future assets. I like Dermott but he's almost guaranteed to be gone after this season, so why not grab a massive upgrade if available?

Ekholm and Granlund would be ideal lol.

Probably asking for too much at that point.
Agreed, that would be ideal but the thing is they'll have a hard time making more than 1 big move; if a deal happened today they could add at most about 2.2m, then about 1/116 more for everyday they wait. If they do something that big it probably becomes even bigger because it'd have to involve Kerfoot and then you have a whole at centre and possibly on the PK depending on how you've brought in.

I do like the idea of bringing multiple players from the same team if possible (e.x. Ekholm, Granlund, Haula) or a guy that's familiar with some of the guys in the room (e.x. Iafallo -> Campbell, Muzz). Might help them adjust to the new environment, especially if they could quarantine together.
