Hoglander seems like the kind of prospect Bergmann and (formerly Vuori) should be giving us outside of the first rounds on a semi regular basis.
I think Hoglander is what we wanted from Tima.
He shot up to fame with the lacrosse goal or whatever you call it.

It's amazing what you will do if you either are trying to save your job or won't be around to clean up the mess afterwards

Let's be honest, the league has cut the amount of years you can sign a player for to save GM's from themselves

Not all those deals turn bad so it's justifiable but it scares the crap out of me because of the "Marleau" experience
100%, too many free agent signings are like that IMO. They sign a player because they fit a need now, but in 2 years when they are washed up, its "someone else problem".

This is not on you but just in general, when comments like this deal is going to age terribly… all that team needs to do is Win the Cup and who cares.
If the Flames win the Cup this season or in two years, I doubt their MGT or fans would care about the last few years of Kadri and Hubie contracts.

Same with the Nucks, if they win the next few seasons, who cares about the 5th-7th years in Miller’s deal.

Same about the Leafs, if Leafs win this season or next, who cares about the last few years of JT, Muzzin and TJ deals.

Maybe By having deals like that the MGT will actually makes the window of contending shorter and take more risks to go full in while players are in their prime instead of half way measures or keep thinking, as long as I can keep the core intact, there is always next season.

On one level you're right - a few good runs with a player can certainly ease the burden of a contract like this.

In this case though, the Nucks have been a fairly meh team as of late. I think they're a team that should be going younger as they retool/rebuild ect

Maybe bc I live in Van and watch the Nucks quite a bit.
I don’t think they are as far as some might think. With BB as their coach, they are a more structured team. They are in the West and not the East. Lastly, they have Demko, who can and did steal series.
I don’t think they should trade Miller for picks as that sets them back a few years. It is certainly a gamble but you need to take those risks or you will constantly be retooling.

And there's always the Coyotes.

If the big bumps happen in 2-3 years then Kadri's / Miller's deals will just be bad, not crippling.

It's possible they are still good players then as well.

And with 67 assists, he just needs the scorers to keep scoring.
I think deals only look bad if the players cannot produce at that salary level.

Looking at capfriendly the Leafs would have 19K in cap space with a 20 man roster. If Sandin were to take the same 1.4M per for 2 seasons deal that Liljegren did the Leafs would have 619K in cap space on a 20 man roster assuming Holl were moved.

I also notice that in one year Sandin is arbitration eligible. If he wants to cash in sooner and better the deal Liljegren got he can sign for less money, say 1.2M for 1 year and head into next offseason with another NHL season to gauge his worth with arbitration in his back pocket if the Leafs want to play hardball again. That would give the Leafs 819K in cap space with a 20 man roster assuming Holl is moved which would allow them to pick an extra player to have on the roster, giving them a 21 man roster. They may also be able to grease Sandin on taking the one year deal by assuring them they will move Holl to create cap room and to create room for him to play every day, so that he knows he'll be on the ice and able to improve his stock going into next offseason with arbitration.

I think they may be holding off on trade in case of a Sandin hold out or offer sheet. Looking at the numbers I think it's pretty obvious what their plan will be. Keep Kerfoot and trade Holl for picks once a deal is finalized with Sandin. Pinch Sandin and try to gain enough cap space to run a 21 man roster with the players you want. I would predict they keep up Benn to be the gritty #7 defenseman, unless Robertson forces his way onto the team.

Trading Holl before Sandin signs gives the Sandin camp a negotiating advantage. Not happening. Signing Sandin with a promise to him that they will trade Holl isn't going to happen either. This would get out in public and cause strife among the players and the NHLPA. He signs and plays where he's told or sits and doesn't play at all or is traded by the GM or leaves the country and plays in Europe (likely done as a Leaf is he tries that). Unless there's an offer sheet he signs.

This pretty much sums up his position well. And the Leafs.

Yeah, maybe Timashov with a more pure scoring touch and shot. Timashov's offense became quite vanilla as he moved up the ranks.

I'm not a Holl fan per se, but I'm not sold on the idea of Sandin in and Holl out because we don't have a lot of big wing span length defenders.

Last year we filled that role between Holl and Lyubushkin on the lower end by committee, which showed me what we really need is a better, more physical do it all big body defender, aka another Muzzin but in his prime.

Subtracting Holl to get Sandin in there makes sense from an asset management POV but not necessarily as an on ice fit.

Like if you've been bored with this off-season
Initially oh this is gonna be some spicy meatballs....

It turned out all fizzle. Most exciting thing was flames debacle. That's really it. Afterwards it was all the dreaded long off season

No it does not. How much cap space a team has left doesn't suddenly give a player more value. The ask and argument will remain the exact same with or without Holl.

Trading Holl now is only a positive. Salvages some of the current awkwardness between management and Sandin by showing him they do believe in him and also increases his trade value on the market by showing other teams he's in a tier worth making space for.

This place is sinking fast with their sandin takes its become the worst place online to discuss sandin no offense, and this is coming from someone who keeps trading him away for Chychrun. The sandin situation isn't as serious (from a negative sandin view) as people are making it out to be.

I agree. People aren't going to like it, but at this moment in time Holl is a better and more important part of the Leafs this upcoming season than Rasmus Sandin is.

Brannstrom signs in Ottawa for 1 year $900K.

Sandin, read the tea leaves man.

Guy is playing this out so poorly and his agent is really misdirecting him here.

Sandin is better than Brannstrom, but he shouldn't get much more than this (especially for one year).

Rodrigues? I'd imagine he'd come in well below 3.5 mill?

I actually really like Kerfoot and his versatility, but I'd be quite fine if we moved him and replaced him with Rodriguez on a cheap deal at this point. Ideally, we could use another quality 4th liner as well.

Same tier player.

Maybe offensively, but I think Sandin is a more useful player defensively.

I don't think Brannstrom will ever become more than a sheltered offensive defenseman, and how long his career lasts will solely depend on how much offense he can generate. Right now, he is struggling offensively and defensively so it is not looking great for him.
