Lundkvist has terrible underlying numbers
Yeah but his most common partner was Patrick Nemeth so it's understandable. I don't think he's as good as Sandin or has as strong a track record, but he might blossom into something with better a better partner and more NHL experience

I don't get it.

Why would we do this deal? We have Liljegren, who is a better version of Lundqvist.

Wow.

Offer sheet compensation for that deal would be a 2nd rounder.

Interesting.
Everyone brings up offer sheet, but most of the time, the player doesn't want to sign a offer sheet. It takes two to tango.

Every team probably speaks to RFAs, but I am willing to bet most don't want to sign the offer sheet.

Not only that. But dallas would just match that offer in a heartbeat.
Just an observation.

Considering all the drama an OS always entails, the return is of hardly any consequence.

Just thought it would be more. :)

Not sure we need a free-wheeling, pure offensive defenseman who is undersized right now. Sandin is far more competent in his own end, and has been more dangerous offensively too.

Lundkvist may be worth a late 2nd round pick if a team really likes him, and he needs a full year in the AHL. Lundkvist is kidding himself if he thinks he is NHL ready right now... Even on a weaker team.

I'd give them a couple of mid-tier prospects just for the prestige and the fact that the Marlies could use some RHD depth right now, but I am not digging deep into the pick or prospect pool for him.

GMs also have an incentive to not rock the boat too much. Everyone at some point has an rfa to sign, they don't want to always be looking over their shoulder.

I hope the Leafs explore a Sandin for Lundkvist swap. Comparable players but I'd rather have the RHD
I had wondered the same thing. Somewhat similar players though Lundkvist apparently has better skating. Plus he has two years of contract left at $925k, plus performance bonuses unlikely to be met. Or many anyway. He’s asked for a trade, as he has no route to the NHL, like Sandin does here.

Schneider or no deal.
Schneider isn’t going anywhere. Lundkvist has asked for a trade.

Sandin for Lundkvist would be quite the lateral move at best.
Which would be the idea, two years at a cheaper contract and RD instead of LD, which are typically harder to obtain.

He plays the right side at least but I agree apart from that I'm down for keeping the devil we know...what if it was Holl instead ?

Rangers don’t need a RD. Fox, Trouba and Schneider already. They don’t have the cap space. They could use a LD.

That's what I figured, just prefer to keep the sandman hoping he'd pan out vs holl in a perfect world . Not sure it's a good idea to deal for lunqvist when they need a defensive d more , but he has an interesting pedigree.

I'd be fine with ZAR on the 4th line.
Me too. I also think Rodrigues is such a great fit on low dollars. I think be makes Kerfoot movable and frees up a couple million.

He is not Kerfoot, but I suspect he might better fit with our need. A guy who can play W or C in the middle six or 4th line. He can PK, has a bit more sandpaper and is cheaper. He allows us to also sign ZAR.

Nothing like some competition for the 4th line.

Rodrigues
ZAR
NAK
Gaudette
Anderson
Malgin

Even Robertson, but with Kerfoot gone, I see 89 in the top 6 to start.

Safe to say off-season moves are done sparing any PTO's.

Pretty underwhelming summer for Dubas. Not that he absolutely had to shake up the core (would have been the boldest move), he didn't do a whole lot to completely revamp lines 3 and 4, not trading anyone away.

Jarnkrok was a nice add, as was Kubel. Re-signing Gio was good. And bringing in Samsonov was a nice gamble.

Goaltending was obviously a need and he is taking some big swings in net. But otherwise the roster has barely been tweaked. Leafs will lean on the same horses to try and lead them forward.

Just a note, Lundvist was picked one spot ahead of Sandin, in the same draft. His strength is his skating, and style similar to Kaberle more. Nils Lundkvist Scouting Report: 2018 NHL Draft #40 - Last Word On Hockey

Here is Sandin’s for comparison.

Really they are comparable players.

He probably does need another year in the AHL, and Sandin is more ready now. But, he should replace Holl next year, and is a natural RD. Sandin currently appears blocked from playing LD, as Lundvist is RD in NYR.

Sure, they provide much of the same game, but positionally it’s a move that might make sense…

I’m not exactly sure at the moment what Sandin’s path to ice time is. Move Holl and hope Sandin can play on the right side for now?

Tage Thompson is huge, plodding and not particularly physical. He has a nice shot and doubled his career shooting percentage for one season. What is the phraseology again? Regression to the mean? Expect no more than 25 goals per season going forward. And it may be worse because teams may just start playing tighter to him and he may get shut down completely. There's a good reason why there hasn't been a Phil Esposito/Tim Kerr/Dave Andreychuk type in a couple of decades.
Shooting % is the biggest one for me. Only like 10 active players have a career shooting percentage of 15% or higher. To expect Thompson to continue that is extremely unlikely.

And I don't get why they signed him now? If he repeats that season for whatever reason, he is not some 8 or 9 mill player. They paid him like he was going to repeat that season without him actually repeating it and didn't even get any kind of discount for signing him early.

It is good though because they are in our division.

Yea it's bizzare. Basically had the JvR contract season without the 6 previous productive years to back it up.

That's a big chunk of risky cap space.
