Kerfoot is Dubas' piece from the Kadri trade that he'll never let go. They're going to actively try to re-sign him in the offseason.

Not if the Leafs are first round fodder again and Dubas is let go.

Doesn't even stop there.

They had a chance at last year's deadline to bring in a real impact piece in Hampus Lindholm. They had the cap space and everything with Muzzin's injury.

Instead they went to the discount bin yet again.

Lack of ruthlessness. They wanted Muzzin to play and not hide him until the playoffs started. As if Kucherov for Tampa the season before wasn’t ready well before the playoffs.

At this point, is it really worth giving up more assets for this group ?? Too late IMO. Let it play out and if they fail, it has to be the end of Shanny, Dubie and Keefer.

Yeah, it feels like more of a sim forward season and just retool the franchise significantly once the dust settles.

Revisiting Robertson for Stankoven.

Move on from Robertson at his near peak value and grab a near identical player 2 years younger. Stankoven is immediately the best right shot forward in the system (non-NHL). Clears up a contract spot too with Stankoven’s contract sliding. It would also be fun to see Stankoven and Minten play together for a year in junior.

Kutcherov. They should Kutcherov Muzzin this year and hope he is healthy come payoffs.

Still pisses me off to this day. A concussion on a player with concussion history is essentially a free ticket to keep them on the LTIR as long as you like. But for some bizarre reason Dubas never took advantage of it.

You need to get the player to consent to it...

Muzzin isnt a guy who seems like he'd voluntarily will take time off unless he's unfortunately forced to

100%. At this point it's throwing good money after bad.

A pinch of leadership from ROR and a touch of physicality from Murphy isn't going to do it.

We're being forced through another redo but with the information we have spending assets is just a bad gamble.

Some moves will be necessary but stay away from big names and don't move big assets.

You honest to god think Muzzin would make a fuss over a few games if it meant the Leafs having a better chance at the cup?

It just comes back to how ruthless the organization is to get better. They seem to have a tiered approach where the core are treated specially, shown loyalty they might not deserve to avoid these difficult decisions, and the bottom 2/3 of the roster is just interchangeable mercenaries.

Jarnkrok and Engvall for 4.35 million are not good enough 3rd liners. Malgin, Aston-Reese and the 750 k guys are good value 4th liners though. I'd rather the 4.35 million go to a good top 6 winger. Then Knies, Holmberg, Anderson or whoever comes in and takes the last winger spot. So you could have something like a Marchment type of winger for 4+ million and Knies/Anderson as top 9 wingers for the playoffs instead of Jarnkrok and Engvall.

This how I'd like to see the team.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
----------- Tavares - ---------
Robertson - Kerfoot - Nylander
Aston-Reese- Kampf - Malgin

Yep. Some people seem to have gotten the idea that you can force healthy, cleared players that want to play to stay on LTIR or to retire whenever it suits you. That's not how it works. Not to mention that it's usually not a great idea to throw an important player from the LTIR straight to playoff games, so then are we sitting/delaying Muzzin and losing/diminishing the excellent performance he put up in that series?

It's funny that people are cherry picking Lindholm out now that he's started the first handful of games of an expensive 8 year contract on an unsustainable hot streak. If we had traded a 1st, 2nd, 2nd, and a former 1st for a declining rental player that ended up playing less than 4 playoff games at less than 100% and providing 0 points, this place would have lost it. Not to mention that with Rielly, Muzzin, and Sandin, it really would have made no sense to sign another left-shot defenseman to an expensive, long-term extension.

Also I'm not sure why people are acting like we didn't do anything or use LTIR. We acquired Giordano. We would have been over the cap post-deadline if our whole team was healthy.

Engvall+ for Kapanen with retention down to even the price of the contracts? Maybe that's all Kapanen wants. He liked it here. He's friends with Nylander. Maybe make the third line something like

xxx Nylander Kapanen

If kapanen cant be bothered on pittsburgh being outplayed by zucker at this point with one of the top two centers wth

Too much money for more of the same

How do you know he can't be bothered? Is it possible that he's just struggling and the coach wants someone in there who isn't right now so they can right that ship??

How many goals does he have in his last 30 games?

A dozen or so last year i think..

At the end of the day why pay more money for him - what is the point

Hence maybe he's struggling. And my question was how do you know he can't be bothered?

And my proposal had retention to even out the salaries.

I’m not sure if i would want Kappy back at the same price as Engvall. Maybe that gives him a kick in the ass and he plays like he’s younger self with us.

Is engvall signed to a one year deal?

Pittsburgh would need to retain on Kapanen.
Youre right.. i missed that

I missed the retention, so pittsburgh pays basically same money for the same but worse player

My answer is i dont know, of course not. My point is he has not been able to seize a long term opportunity as an impact player .. moves up and down the lineup .. we have those.. no impact here
