It seems like their is no middle of the lineup guys anymore.
You have your stars and your role players, but the days of the second/third line players are gone. The tweener offensive guys are being weeded out of NHL lineups.
They are are plenty of C's out there, putting up 35-45 points, kind of where you'd hope your 3C would be production wise. Finding one, who does all the things one might hope for, on a team who might be a seller is pretty difficult though.
Adam Henrique fits portions of the bill, but at $5.825 million, his cap hit hurts. Good speed, more of scorer than setup guy, not big, nor physical, good in the dot, versatile...
RoR -> His skating has gone downhill, and who knows what he wants on his next contract... Expensive... if his skating was better.....
Nico Sturm -> He's never really put up the points you'd want from a 3C, though he's doing better this year, in a very small sample set, with unsustainable shooting... Cheap though... Probably more of a 4C, but the rest of his tools are interesting, size, skating, defensively strong... you'd want to aim higher.
You know... Jonathon Toews would be an interesting pickup, albeit incredibly expensive cap wise... No real physicality anymore, but he'd be a very good 3C going forward, provide leadership, has always been good defensively, and should provide 35-45 points easily enough. The challenge being, what would he sign for next? Toews retained and Murphy... especially if Toews would extend in the $3-4 mil range??
