Yeah if I were to summarize my issues with Toronto and kind of leave some notes for the next management group it would be to just draft a diverse group of prospects with different skill sets and body types for different promotion streams. Spend fewer assets trying to find Torey Krug and Jonathan Marchessault and have a proper understanding of what your core group is missing and needs to succeed. If you don’t have killer instinct. Go get killers. Draft killers. Develop a killer room. Bring in multiple veteran killers with cups on the resume to help. But, no.

Minten - thanks JustAShadow ...
Grebinkin
Knies
Villeneuve
Krall

Is that really the extent of players over 6'?
Other than goalies.

If he could actually do what you were saying.....would he not be in the Pens lineup everyday?

There is a reason he is sitting.
Very understandable but unless he fell completely off a cliff he still a skillful player though not every centermen meshes with his game I remember him and matthews were not good together either

I just shake my head. Year after year they go head to head against big bluelines and grinding teams and intimidating buildings in the playoffs and have self characterized their group as lacking killer instinct (which basically means they're intimidated in big moments) and yet they seem to envision some kind of future where the route to success is to look even more like Alex Kerfoot At every position.

Kapanen seems kind of dysfunctional in his own way, a la Galchenyuk. I'd take him back as a UFA on a league minimum to pad out the roster next year but he doesn't really seem like much of a player.

Its actually hilarious how soft this team is. Like laughably bad.

This era of the Maple Leafs is such a massive overcorrection on the Burke era, and so thin intellectually when you look under the hood. Back in 2015 to 2017, so the theory goes, skill and speed is coming to replace all the knuckle dragging thug hockey as evidenced by the success of the Blackhawks and Penguins. And in the years since then we've basically seen a pretty reasonable blend of skill, physicality, defense, goaltending at the top of the pyramid with the teams that have gone deep in the playoffs or won cups.

But Dubas and the Leafs have carried on like this march to non contact hockey actually happened.

I'd add Rielly to that list just to see what a return could look like. I don't think I can do another 8 years of him on the PP.

I think your list is too short, unless you mean all of them?

Of course some have clauses.
Ideally all of them. We have some fresh bodies coming in Knies and Steeves up front which helps with the salary cap.

________ - Matthews - Nylander
Knies - Tavares - ________
Bunting - ________ - Steeves
Aston Reese - Kampf - ________

Rielly - ________
________ - Liljegren
Giordano - Brodie

Samsonov - ________

Now fill in the blanks with some speed, skill, size, physicality. Not just ballerinas.

That’s on coaching. I wouldn’t mind Reilly on the second PP unit.

Rielly's in his own head but also completely ineffective on the PP. When he struggles I notice his default play on the PP is to only pass off to his left on his strong side along the boards while stationary and is unable to distribute right across the body. This limits the east west movement on the PP cutting off 50% of the unit. He also has no shot so the net front guy is completely useless.

Not only that but now you have the best shooter in the game sitting in the high slot as well on top of already having someone as the net front presence with not even having a shot from the point. It’s really an all around disaster.
