I'm a bit worried about this team. Dubas has lots to do before the playoffs to make this team a true contender.

Need:
- A 3rd string goalie in case this situation occurs again (ala the Rittich acquisition)

- A top 4 Dman. D depth is solid, but need someone to fill Muzzin's role

- Middle 6 center. Large hole there that Engvall isn't capable of filling offensively. Kampf is best suited to 4th line shutdown role

- Physical/tough winger who's better than Simmonds and can play regularly

Let's hope he has a plan to correct these holes. With Muzzin out there's some cap space to play with. Engvall should be moved if possible to free up more space.

Leafs - Predators
Tanner Jeannot & Yakov Trenin
for
Nick Robertson, Pierre Engvall & 1st

Leafs - Blue Jackets/Islanders
Andrew Peeke/Scott Mayfield
for
Justin Holl, 3rd & 2024 2nd

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Bunting - Tavares - Nylander
Trenin - Kampf - Jeannot
ZAR/Malgin - Kerfoot - Jarnkrok
Simmonds

Rielly - - Peeke/Mayfield
Sandin - Liljegren (2A)
Giordano - Brodie (2B)
Benn

The problem is that people are just looking at a player's height and weight and putting them all in one box.

Dubas has drafted a very diverse set of prospects, and the common theme amongst all of his prospects is that they are passionate, hard-working, and intelligent. Then we develop them into what we need them to be and watch them grow (physically, emotionally, and mentally). Case in point, Holmberg is 6'0", 203 lbs now according to EP. He was drafted at 5'10" 174lbs according to NHL.com. Not huge, but certainly not a guy whose size will limit him. Abruzzese was 5'9", 160. He is listed at 5'11" 183 on EP now.

The other thing is whether there were even large guys worth drafting, and for the most part, the answer to that is 'no'. Now it is still early, so things could certain change (and larger guys do tend to take longer to develop), but as it stands right now, there have been a lot of big whiffs on larger guys... Not much unlike the Hunter drafts. We are already hurting hard after those 3 drafts where a ton of large guys were selected and zero became NHLers (most didn't even come close). Instead, we took some smaller guys and a solid number of them are knocking on the door to the NHL right now. In the meantime, we also supplanting that list with a number of larger guys on AHL contracts. Some have even been signed (McMann, Marchment, Douglas, Rubins, etc.) and others have fizzled out (Brazeau).

Dubas doesn't have an aversion to larger or physical players... He just has an aversion to bad players and will not overrate or underrate a player's capabilities due to their size (at least when he drafts; there have been some iffy size-based decisions with signings and trades that have hurt him). There has been a lot of that coming from fans.

Dubas draft evaluations can probably started now.

2018
Sandin and Durzi looks like a good picks.
Holmberg is trending as a good pick.

2019
Robertson is trending as a good pick.
Abruzzese " "

2020-2022
There are some who are looking good but until in the NHL can't be evaluated wrt NHL trend.

Before the Leafs throw picks away on depth players, I'd prefer to see what they have in the minors.
There is a group with the Marlies who appear to be leading the way.

Now, if they're going to throw picks away it better be for a great cause (player), not a good one.

A difference maker, and it doesn't have to be a #1 defender, a top 6 forward, but it better be a difference maker.

Not enough for either team the Leafs are trading with.

Engvall is a complete waste of his Size and height.

Only the leafs can have a player who can skate with size and be the softest player known to man. Ditto for Justin Holl
I know Holl has a decent amount of fans around here and I'm not looking for an argument but for me personally, if we're going to have a D-man making 2 million that sucks, I'd rather have a 2 million defenseman that sucks but also kicks the shit out of people.

Gudbranson now makes 4 million but I'd rather have Gudbranson at 2 million over Holl at 2 million. Just using Gudbranson as an example. I'm sure there are other examples too.

Schenn

Would love schenn as well.

How did Jamie Benn look last night? He's a tough mofo with a lot of grit. Only question is if he can play on a day-to-day basis.

But the leafs love to bench people who can throw a hit anyways, so maybe it wont even matter

Agreed. Justin Holl is utterly useless. The dude should be playing like Robert Bortuzzo but instead wants to play like Erik Karlsson.

He thinks he's better than he is and is soft as a buttercup in the process. Another player who's useless in using his size and weight

If Kapanen is available, which it seems, I'd for sure send Engvall their way if they want to just try and do a 1 for 1 swap and change of scenery. I'm assuming we can take on the extra million in cap hit with Muzzin on the shelf for lord knows how long

If Toronto throws away picks on a player, it has to be a difference maker, no point in spending assets on a 4th line player, should have at least one decent forward in the AHL that can play 8 mins a night.

We have to many holes to fill in the roster to be thinking to go all in, in a ideal world, we need a top 6 forward to play on 2nd line and a top 4 d-man to replace Muzzin if he's done. and better depth.

This seems like a "in a perfect world" kinda thing and not necessarily big needs.

A center to ensure Engvall, Kerfoot and Jarnkrok stay on the wing would be my #1 priority. Pure example would be someone like Horvat. Maybe you get ROR or Toews on 50% retained. Maybe you go longer term and you can get someone like Jenner if Columbus blows it up completely.

A defenseman to replace Muzzin would also be a big boost but I like the top 4 at this time. A very close 2nd priority.

A 3rd stringer isn't going to make a difference. You won't find much better than Kallgren/Woll (if he's back) and a tough winger is pointless unless they are high in the lineup.

The biggest question mark is Muzzin, if we don't have him going forward, he's a must replacement, way more important having a good 3C. It's hard for Toronto to have any direction until they know what's up with him.

I think Kapanen would be too expensive on his current deal. He isn't a free agent for another 2 years though. Connor Brown and Andreas Johnsson are free agents. I wouldn't mind bringing them back to back fill the middle of the lineup, kind of bring back some of the band back together. (For cheap).

I would argue the main priority is the one you have stated as the second one in truth trading kerfoot and getting a physical top six winger should be up there as well but number 1 right shot d to play with rielly

I hope nobody fell for the ball hockey move circling around and cutting to the middle against the Canucks. Literally nobody to deke or worry about, just move into empty space and shoot.

Engvall has a tendency to fool people into thinking he's useful because the regular season presents lots of opportunities like that. More so in second half of season when a lot of bubble and non playoff teams start giving up.

Then playoffs come around and harsh reminder how soft he is.

My top targets would be

Center
ROR
Horvat
Scissons

Wingers
Tarasenko
Kane
Jeannot
Trenin
Barbashev

RD
Parayko
Murphy
Zub
Roy

LD
Chychurn
Gavrikov

Goalie
Demko
Saros
I am happy with Samsonov though.

Realistically I think we could fill 2 of 5 holes.
Ie Tarasenko + Murphy, Horvat + Parayko,
ROR + Gavrikov, Saros + Kane, etc.

Salary would need to be moved but filling atleast two holes could really help this team get far in the post season.
