Starting to feel like we would need pretty strong additions to beat Tampa, Florida or Boston in R1, assuming we get into a divisional spot.

With our goalies injury history there’s gonna be legit concern all season. At any point one or both can be out. How do you mortgage the future on something so precarious? For that reason I can’t see any high end rentals. Paying a first or more for a one run rental when we could be going into playoffs with no goalies is too risky.

he never should have been qualified.

Yes, he should have.
Just came off 15 goals and 35 points in a support role.
He just has to play up to his potential, and he looks like he's starting to get up to speed.
If he can't return to form, he can be moved.

Don't forget Leafs are one of he lowest scoring teams in the league thus far.

nah. he's not worth $2.25m.

I wouldnt mind kappy at 50 percent or around 2 million for him is fine. He adds lots of speed and was a decent Penalty killer.

I agree, we are really missing the element of speed which used to be a defining hallmark of the team.

Kapanen despite inconsistent, seems to have that clutch factor. I recall he was a guy who could score those extremely timely goals.

Lobbing a random name out there. But if we can free up one roster spot, could Tyler Bozak be a good Jason Spezza replacement as center depth?

No chance Nashville moves Saros.

I don’t think Saros would be a Dubas type goalie. He’s locked in for a while and the Leafs tend to shy away from those big goalie contracts. Askarov on the other hand would be an interesting get but that would likely involve a sell off to do it.

Saros is 27 and has 3 years left on his deal, including this year, at 5m. I don't see how that's "long term", a "big goalie contract", or something that Dubas wouldn't be interested in, though the other user is right and Nashville is definitely not moving him at this point in time.

5' 11" | 180 lb what are you talking about. :sarcasm:

He might be done.
And like you say Leafs would have to move someone to sign him, and who makes sense to move?
I'd be down for moving some prospect(s) for futures.

It would be nice if they had less than 50 contracts wouldn't it?

Name one other goalie Dubas has traded for that would include a 3 year term remaining and $5 million AAV. Or conversely, name a goalie Dubas has committed 3 years and $5 million plus on in any signing to date.

Soucy and Zub

Subtract holl and Muzzin

Soucy-Zub
Rielly-Brodie
Giordano-Liljegren

Stacked.

He might be done.

Would be nice just to be able to make tinkering moves without having to dump a random.

I think Kral will be ready for next year.

I think if we have Sandin, Liljegren, and Kral plus if Niemela wants to contend for a spot the blueline will not have the right mix.

One young defenseman I would be curious about is Bowen Byram. Can Colorado afford to re-sign him? If so, does it increase the likelihood that any one of Toews, Manson or Girard shakes loose? Each one of those guys has some pros and cons but could help Toronto.

Scott Mayfield from the Island would be a good UFA target. Gavrikov would be another.

He's both employed a goalie making 5m (Andersen) for 3 years and signed a goalie for 3 years (Mrazek), so I'm not sure how you're concluding that 5m or 3 years is too much for him.
What goalies with a 5m AAV and 3 years of term have even been traded during his tenure?
A Saros certainly hasn't been available.

I agree. Between the goalie health, and even bigger, the core's ability to deliver in the playoffs, there's too many question marks to bet on this core in terms of mortgaging futures.

Some recent deep runs, I'd have a different tone and say go for it. At this point, the team needs to figure things out on their own before betting on them. It's unfortunate, but I think futures need to be saved for two scenarios. Core V2 with an extended Matthews or the Post-Matthews era rebuild. Sucks, but with the variables I mentioned above plus wondering about Matthews' future, there is a lot that can be blown up in the team's face. Would hate to be left without some sort of pipeline to support Matthews if he extends or to get the wheels rolling on an eventual rebuild.

I'm not willing to give up much for a rental, unless there are plans to extend them, which I'd think the chances would be quite low. For a rental, I'd pony up for example Hirvonen and a 2nd at most. And that won't get it done.

If we are talking about Sandin, Robertson, 1st 2023, this needs to be an impact player with term. I'd also be hesitant to give up Knies, Niemela and Minten in any deal. These 3 look to be great propects and also seem pegged to fill important holes (2LW, 2nd or 3rd pair RHD, 3LC).
