I have to adjust my expectations during the year. Let's look at our expiring contracts:
  • Kerfoot
  • Engvall
  • Aube-Kubel
  • Bunting
  • Kampf
  • ZAR
  • Simmonds
  • Holl
  • Samsonov
These are our tradeable pieces for a small shakeup.

Kampf and Samsonov are having the most valuable seasons of this list but generally speaking you want to sell high. Still don't want to move either guy.

Everyone else on that list should be a trade consideration. If Bunting wants a monster contract maybe he should show something other than being capable of riding passenger to 2 of the best offensive players in the NHL

That's fair here. I'd say keep Samsonov but the rest I really don't care. Even Bunting.

The big problem is that nobody will give up anything good and unless the Leafs just amass picks, it's going to be tough. At this rate, I'd just gather as many picks and prospects as possible, call-up a couple Marlies and really inject energy in this lifeless team.

Get Steeves and McMann up (when healthy) with maybe someone like Abruzzese, keep Kral up with Mete.

If we're gonna suck, might as well have fun doing it.

I like the value, but I think Konecny has the same work ethic as Marner, which you are trying to rid the room of by trading him.
Flip Konecny for Farabee, I’d even be fine with that. Maybe we can squeeze Floridas 3rd rounder out of them as well.

Amass picks where possible and take on short term salary dump if necessary. Get beefed up for the draft, tons of money in the offseason and make some crucial decisions on the core and management.

To Toronto: Ivan Provorov + Travis Konecny + NYR 3rd Rounder
To Philadelphia: Mitch Marner

To Toronto: Tyler Bertuzzi
To Detroit: Nick Robertson + TOR 1st Rounder

Top six:
Bertuzzi - Matthews - Nylander
Bunting - Tavares - Konecny

Top pairing:
Provorov - Liljegren

Let's keep the first rounder. Might be the 3rd most valuable asset in the organization the way things are headed.

I think it really depends on Liljegren but I think people bringing up Murphy makes sense. He's signed for a few more years, he can play a lot of minutes and plays a more defensive robust game, which could go well with Rielly. Brodie can play RD and LD very well, so there's a few options the Leafs can do.

Gio and Liljegren can be a dynamic shut down line and they were fantastic together last year. Brodie with Sandin makes up for the other pairing, but you can also switch Brodie with Murphy depending on chemistry and all that.
I think they will have to aquire someone like Murphy as you said. I dont think the leafs want to have Gio playing a significant amount of time during the regular season given his age so I dont think him taking over Muzzin will happen or is too good an idea. However maybe the balance the pairings more and go that way.

I agree that Lily's play will determine a lot for the leafs but I do think the need to add a top 4 if Muzzin is out.

Did you happen to see the hit Liljegren laid out in his first “knock the rust off” game with the Marlies? He levelled a guy, seriously, laid him out flat with a hit in the middle of his zone. I’d like to see him back, paired with Giordano, and make those two the shutdown pairing. Let Sandin and Holl slip down to the third pairing where they won’t have to face the primary scoring lines of the opposition which will let them thrive far easier.
Ya im not as much worried about Lily on a shutdown pairing (though it would be a fairly big role increase). Its more old Gio that I feel like shouldn't be used in such heavy usage in the regular season.

I do agree that Sandin and Holl would look much better on the third pairing though

Joey Anderson is on a heater. 6 goals in 7 games. He has a bit of Blake Coleman potential in him. He plays hard. Wouldn't mind giving the top 9 a new look.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Kerfoot-Nylander - the speed line.
Jarnkrok-Tavares-Anderson - the pucks in deep line.
Engvall-Kampf-Aube-Kubel - Kampf and Engvall worked in the past.

Signing Jarnkrook to a long-term deal when Anderson was sitting in the AHL was hilarious.

I'd still like to see Jarnkrok-Kerfoot-Malgin as a speed 3rd line, because I think Tavares should still have someone better than a pair of 'meh' grinders playing with him, but it is an option if that does not work out.

The 4th line was really good with Engvall and Kampf on it together. NAK looked good with them, but so did ZAR. I think Engvall prefers LW though so NAK is a more natural fit for the line.

Totally agree, however I’d also like to think that Gio will thrive with a youngin’ like Liljegren as a partner. He’s the brains and lily is the muscle. If they could find that balance as a pair look out.

And I’ll say it again as well… a perfect 3rd pairing lol

Don't think we'll be sweating the 2.1M cap hit too much. He's a good all around player paid at a below average clip for a 3rd liner. Right now nobody really looks good or are earning their keep, so it's easy to say that now.

Yep I mean it's basically a bit over what one would pay for a premium 4th liner,.and well under what one way pay for a premium 3rd line guy.

He's not a guy who can drive a line by himself but think he can compliment guys who can well - especially defensively. I don't see him as an issue even though he's been flat offensively

I'd like to see him and Steeves get a look. At this point there's no downside

Anderson is a good AHL player but even in the pre-season just existed.
You mean like the Leafs entire season so far? I'm not trying to say Anderson is going to turn this ship around, but so far no change with the roster is waking up our top players. Maybe bring in some higher effort guys like him and even Steeves. See what they are capable of.
