All this talk about Matthews’ next contract reminded me that Marner’s deal is almost up too and he’s probably expecting a raise.

I’m already pissed about Marner’s next contract and his demands as a UFA.

So we've settled the debate right? 1 year of McCann was definitely better than Justin Holl.
I could be remembering wrong but I don’t think we had the cap space for both McCann and Kerfoot.
The idea was more that what we really lost in the expansion draft was Hallinder and a 7th. Which in fairness I’d probably rather have than Holl right about now. lol

We could have kept Kerfoot and McCann and flipped one or whatever but we could have easily lost Holl. No hindsight needed.

The entire intention of trading for McCann was that we would lose one of him or Kerfoot in the expansion draft and would still have the other as the backup top 6 centre.
Our cap situation didn’t allow us to add another 3M+ forward.

I’m not trying to absolve management of all blame here it’s their fault we didn’t have cap flexibility and we probably shouldn’t have traded anything to protect Holl but over a year later people are still complaining about a situation they don’t seem to fully understand.

Well we're a tenth of the season in and it's time to make some tough calls.

Obviously we need to trick Matthews, Kampf, and Samsonov into 8-year extensions, and then surprise tear down the team around them into a a rebuild. Complete teardown.

Tavares and Giordano can play out their contracts here if they want because they're great, and also NMCs.

Apparently the Leafs didn't want to part with a draft pick for Ethan Bear, so they might have a lot of assets to work with for an in-season trade.
This is bad news for me. I would hope it would be due to realizing Ethan Bears should not be the D-men to bring in to build the blueline with, and not because they actually wanted Bear but couldn't agree on price.

To Toronto: Ivan Provorov + Travis Konecny + NYR 3rd Rounder
To Philadelphia: Mitch Marner

To Toronto: Tyler Bertuzzi
To Detroit: Nick Robertson + TOR 1st Rounder

Top six:
Bertuzzi - Matthews - Nylander
Bunting - Tavares - Konecny

Top pairing:
Provorov - Liljegren

I would do the philly one.. however i dont think they look twice

I have to adjust my expectations during the year. Let's look at our expiring contracts:
  • Kerfoot
  • Engvall
  • Aube-Kubel
  • Bunting
  • Kampf
  • ZAR
  • Simmonds
  • Holl
  • Samsonov
These are our tradeable pieces for a small shakeup.

Kampf and Samsonov are having the most valuable seasons of this list but generally speaking you want to sell high. Still don't want to move either guy.

Everyone else on that list should be a trade consideration. If Bunting wants a monster contract maybe he should show something other than being capable of riding passenger to 2 of the best offensive players in the NHL

Agnostic on Ethan Bear. But this is the management team that has Danny DeKeyser waiting on the Marlies…

I think we should be looking for a Tkachuk like trade to move on from Marner. I'm interested in Meier from SJ as a centrepiece and honestly would like to figure out a way to get Karlsson in that deal, but I don't think the cap would work. Too much long term salary added, when the very thing we want is to get away from so much money in so few players. We need depth back.

I like the value, but I think Konecny has the same work ethic as Marner, which you are trying to rid the room of by trading him.
