What are peoples thoughts on Jake McCabe? Defensive first type of dman, can kill penalties and play both sides. Still under contract past this season. Would be an upgrade over Holl and definitely available from Chicago.

Rielly - Liljegren/McCabe
Sandin - Brodie
Giordano - McCabe/Liljegren
Damn I’m old. Anytime I see McCabe I always think of Bryan McCabe, he of the famous but outlawed Can Opener……

I agree with calling Chicago. Call about Murphy instead... Right hand shot, while McCabe is Left handed. ( I know McCabe plays both sides) Murphy is the better player, cap hits are close.

I’d rather aim much higher but if A,B,C, and D fall through sure.
He plays the type of game we need but there are guys who do it better

I want to like this twice lol

Murphy is the perfect fit. I bet we could even get some retention out of them.

If Muzzin is done, we don't need retention.. and the cost to obtain would be lower.

Can't do that.

If you are getting Kane and Murphy, I'd go more with a heavy futures offer, sell the farm. If Muzz and Murray are truly out, we don't need to dump all the cap, especially with a bit of retention on Kane.

I fail to see how giving up in his prime 26 year old Nylander for 34 year old UFA Kane for 1 season is in our best interests.

It honestly confounds me how often I see it, along with Knies being thrown in just further the “nails on a chalkboard” effect these proposals have one me.

I can’t wait for Kane and Chychrun (still injured and had another “setback” today further extending his injury by the way….) to be signed by someone else so I don’t have to keep seeing these proposals that hit our prospects and hamstrings our long term for players that don’t even address glaring needs.

Beyond the fact that trading minimum 2 years of a 26 year old for 1 year of a 34 year old is stupid.
I really want nothing to do with Kane. He has reportedly said he doesn’t want to come here and he has shown some major character flaws as a human being. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on that fact and if they want to be in business with someone like that but I don’t.

We don’t need it but it would still be good to have if the price was right. His contract is 3 more years after this and it would be nice to have the cap flexibility going forward.

Agreed on Kane.

I mean you can always ask. They will need to retain on Kane and Toews as well, so they might be reluctant to use all three retention spots.

I think before you call about Murphy, you call about Andrew Peeke. Much younger, no health concerns so far, and cheaper cap hit. Before long, he’ll be just as good. Columbus might hang up the phone, but they do have three other NHL RHD.

Opinion on Matt Roy from the Kings, compared to Peeke?

Older, smaller. 2 years control vs 4. Higher cap hit. Matt Roy is a very good player. Maybe not as good defensively, not the shut down guy, but so far better offensively. Roy has a bigger brand name, more known, but I think Peeke is talked about in the same way a few years from now. Roy is a very good option. If you can get a younger, cheaper cap hit cost controlled guy for four years, that’s what I like there. Roy would be a good get though.

If you pick up a 24 year old, they should be good to 31-33 years old as a more physical guy. That’s still 7-9 years. A 27 year old, that’s 4-6 years.

I know you didn’t ask me but I’ll add my 2 cents anyway.
I like Matt Roy a lot but I don’t think he is nearly as available.
LA is a team with playoff aspirations and who want to move into the contender bracket.
Just for those reasons I think the ask for him would be much higher.

All good. Insight is much appreciated. 👍🏻

I definitely agree, Murphy would be at the top of my priority list but after seeing what Chicago got for Hagel, who knows what they’ll expect for Murphy. Do you move Niemela in the package? McCabe would be a lot cheaper to acquire and still an upgrade on what we have. But I do agree, if you can get Murphy you get him.

Others may disagree, but move Sandin for Murphy before I move Niemala.

A RHD corps of Murphy, Liljegren, and Niemala is solid and would have us well set on valuable ELC’s. It also allows us to move on from Holl, while Brodie is still here to give Topi time to develop on the Marlies next season.

LHD is much easier to draft, and Mete is really showing himself as a valid option for 6/7 D.

If people want to go the cheaper but plays farther down the depth chart option how about Dylan Demelo. Not a top 4 guy but a solid 5/6 guy.
Physical and tough as hell.

I think moving Roy, and picking up Chychrun would be a solid move for LA. They have Doughty, Durzi and Clarke who also are Right Handed D, so it’s forced Durzi to play his offside. They don’t have much in the way of LHD.

Walker was a healthy scratch recently. He's a RD but after missing last year he's had a rough go of coming back.

Fair point. I don’t necessarily think LA wouldn’t trade him. Just more that they probably aren’t looking to and would price him based on that.

Neither Columbus, nor Jets would entertain moving those players without substantially better returns than that.

Interesting enough, if Murray is in fact done for this year, you don't need to trade anyone away at all. ( I mean for cap reasons)... you could achieve this with futures, draft picks... though it would be costly. Obviously bodies need to move, for contract reasons.

But

Bunting Matthews Marner
Robertson Tavares Nylander
Knies Lowry Kerfoot
Engvall Kampf Jarnkrok
Simmonds

Rielly Brodie
Sandin Peeke
Giordano Liljegren
Holl

Samsanov
Reimer

Fits under the cap, with $3.5 mil to spare.
