D from the Oilers to help with muzzins job?

All I can say to that is "lmao".

Um, Muzz job is pretty damn hard. You will need a certified guy there not Justin Holl and Justin Holls son

Murphy and Gavrikov are my top two choices for our backend. Both can skate and bring size and physicality on the backend. Ideal defensive pairings for me would be

Rielly - Murphy
Gavrikov - Liljegren
Giordano - Brodie
Mete

Gavrikov and Zub are the two perfect targets. Problem is neither of those teams can afford to lose them, but their FA asks could force the teams' hands.

I'd throw 5m+ at either guy long-term, with preference to Gavrikov.

Murphy is a stylistic fit, but his injury history is worrisome and he'll be 30 next season. We'll be back in a Muzzin situation in 2-3 years. All of these options will require a 1st +, so for that price you need an age appropriate long-term matchup D. Can't afford to keep burning 1st rounders for temporary fixes.

Zub makes a lot more sense than Gavrikov. Signing Gavrikov just blocks Sandin's progression, Gio will still have another year on the depth chart, and then guys like Kokkonen and Kral at LD are a lot closer to the NHL (and could potentially replace Gio) than Niemela and Villeneuve at RD (who are more fits to replace Brodie).

I wouldn't be against bringing Holl back or signing Mayfield, but I think both are going to get inflated deals and I would rather give that to a younger guy like Zub than guys in their 30's (especially Mayfield given his physical style of play).

Most people here share that sentiment about wanting RD, I think LD is the issue moving forward.

If you acquire a RD with shutdown capabilities, who is the LD you are completing that pair with? Definitely not Rielly or Sandin, so 40 year old Gio?

LD will have a lighter acquisition cost, and there's better complementary RD to build a shutdown pair around (Brodie/Liljegren, eventually Niemela).

I wouldn't hinge this core's prime on Sandin's progression. Regardless, both him and Kral can play RD and will have to demand a top 4 spot with their play, which the former hasn't done. Kokkonen is nowhere near the NHL IMO, but i've been low on him for a while now.

But yes, Zub would still be excellent.

Gavrikov, Zub, Murphy, Roy are all excellent targets. We will have to wait until the deadline for most of them though.

I don't think Murphy would require to wait until the deadline, Chicago would take a good/great offer now for him right now I think. It all depends on Muzzin though for us.

I am hoping Cat takes the Sens to the cleaners, which opens up Zub. They really should be signing him long term, though.

Murphy seems to be our best trade target.

Gavrikov would make a great Brodie partner, and I think you can find more TOI for Sandin elsewhere.

Rielly - Liljegren
Gavrikov - Brodie
Giordano - Sandin

Or:

Rielly - Zub/Murphy
Giordano - Brodie
Sandin - Liljegren

With Niemela 1-2 years away and Brodie/Gio expiring in 2024. I prefer option A with the LD personally.

That 3rd pairing just feels painfull slow, that's the only issue I see.

Rielly - Brodie
Sandin - Lilly
Gavrikov - Gio

If we don't have faith in Sandin becoming a top 4 LD, then we should trade him altogether.

That's one thing. The other is that even if he actualizes that potential, how do you build a top 4 with him and Rielly as your LDs? You'd have to believe that Sandin can be 1/2 of a highly dependable matchup pair.

I mean... we have Holl as 1/2 of that "highly dependable matchup pair" right now...

I think Cat will eventually pick it up, and will get 8-9, but 40 goals? With Stutzle and whoever else?

The word of the day is: Kaneflation.

Rasmus Sandin plays like he thinks he's a top 4 defender. Love the guy's confidence and competitiveness but he probably needs to tone down the Erik Karlsson impression. Not that it has bitten him at all this season. Wouldn't it be great if he really can pull off this style of play? A genuine 4th forward type of defenseman turns even a team's 4th line into an offensive threat.

If we took a snapshot of our overall D depth chart right now, would this be close (disregard side for this exercise)?:

  1. Mo
  2. Brodie
  3. Lilly
  4. Muzzin IR
  5. Gio
  6. Holl
  7. Sandin
  8. Mete
  9. Benn
  10. Kral
I don't like Rasmus on his wrong side, he looked really lost to me. So he's gotta stay LD.

Not sure if Gio can switch and not lose effectiveness.

I'd list them like this.

How long is Muzzin out for?

If it's a while, we need a big addition on Defense

If it's a while, but he comes back, cap space for making a big addition will be incredibly tight. We basically need to have Muzzin be LTIRetired... in order to make a big addition.

Sure, we could move Kerfoot for a retained rental, but I'm not sure that's in our best interest, and our depth isn't really performing well enough to move Kerfoot right now.
