Apparently it was a Horvat vs Miller type (and I guess some players have taken sides or stayed out of it) thing in the locker room last year.
i personally wouldn't be surprised if hughes isn't one of the culprits along with pettersson.

The Canucks are the biggest mismanaged mess in the NHL, even above the Coyotes. On par with the Islanders.

No vision, just a bunch of retool moves year to year. They could have had a heck of a rebuild over the last few years but now it's a little too late.

Might as well.. how many teams now are looking for a defenceman and a rhd to boot

Bear might not be a big player, he's average sized and height, but he can play. He reminds me a lot of Dermott in a way. For the money and our needs, it would make some form of sense.

No idea the player I'd give up, but I would think a Malgin for Bear swap might be pretty fair. Both players that want to play and could use the change of teams. Maybe a pick added from them for the difference in salary or something.

I think there is a possibility he is clashing but i dont think it is cut and dry if he is the specific problem or if it is clashing with the longer term 'relaxed' players

I do think it would get to miller nore than others though
Miller always have a chip on his shoulder. From being traded to TB then traded to Nucks.
He is a tough and demanding dude.

If Muzzin is out, Engvall for Bear? I think Engvall makes a tad more on the cap. You can bring up someone like Steeves/Holmberg/McMann in place of Engvall afterwards. Carolina can use a F to replace Kase.

Rielly - Liljegren
Sandin - Brodie
Giodano - Bear
Holl/Mete

Not sure it makes sense for the Leafs to trade Engvall just to have Holl be the #7. Feels like we are getting worse, arguably at two spots.

I dont think they would have any use for malgin.. he would be a forward version of bear..

Maybe a pick added due to a contract awap neesing to happen..

He has to walk a fine line.. he can demand as lomg as he is making the smart plays on the ice.. which he isnt. I saw some changes in him the first two games.. stopping and looking before just passing and it helped him

Schenn was on him for this.. I can totally see Miller being the guy that responds with will at least I'm trying something

JT Miller is an interesting proposition. You can tell he's a bad attitude, bad body language, abrasive teammate that you need in some moderation, but I don't know if he would work with our peace collective here.

His contract is also looking like it's a few hairs away from becoming a boat anchor. Not something I'd have much interest in

I'm losing interest in giving older guys term on contracts, I just don't think it's worth the headache on the backend

Tie up guys in there mid 20's and bargain bin signings in UFA, if we have to trade for older guys so be it but let them walk once there contracts run out

For every Brodie you get a Muzzin (who I like but he's really starting to struggle)

For me Holl seems like a fine #6. Sandin appears to be a good #5. With the emergence of Lilly last year and Sandin being good this year and Brodie and Gio being so good I like our D the way it is. Unless I'm getting a big time player to replace Muzzin like a Pelech or Ekholm that really moves the needle I'm good with what we have. The Leafs have been insanely good defensively this year. Top 5.

This could easily change with a single injury or slip in performance from any one of the top 6. But right now I'm waiting to see how goaltending, the 3rd line and the defence play to see what piece would she add at the deadline. As of today I would want to spend the money on a Bertuzzi type of top 9 forward. But if goaltending or D struggles I will change my position based on the facts. So I think it's better to wait until this team makes any movies.

I'm no expert, but I don't think Bear is the answer here.

That said, if Muzz is out long term, I'm not against trying it out for the right price.

Was there ever really interest in doing that in the first place?

I wasn't a fan of doing it for Campbell or Kuemper in net. Certainly wasn't interested in doing it for Hyman, and I am not into doing it with Bunting either.

It really only makes sense for guys with high IQ and can figure out other ways to contribute when their tools start breaking down (which is why a guy like Jarnkrok may be able to live up to all 4 years of his deal) and then elite players like Rielly, Tavares, Marner, Matthews, and Nylander. You also try to avoid giving big money to physical players much beyond their 30th birthday as well.

I would love another big scoring winger in the top 9. For the money of Engvall+Murray we could have had Mason Marchment (PPG right now) + Charlie Lindgren (.923 save %) to back up Samsonov.

Marchment----Matthews-----Marner

Robertson-----Kerfoot------Nylander

Bunting-------Tavares-----Jarnkrok

Aston-Reese---Kampf---Aube-Kubel
There was a lot of hate on this board for Marchment this summer. I’m glad he’s proving a lot of the regular posters here wrong. It’s painful that he’s providing what he does for only 4.5M and the Leafs aren’t benefiting.

We tried, fortunately for us the Bruins took the bullet instead

Bear is fine, but he is more than what we really need. We just need a solid #7, and we are not a team that can afford a 2.2 mill #7. If he is free or just costs some nothing contracts, and we have extensive guys on LTIR the entire year, then we can do it if we want him.

Carolina may not care about the cap, but they are also not a team that can afford to be paying 2.2 mill in salary to a guy not in their lineup at all right now, which is why he may end up on waivers or going in a soft deal.

If we can snatch him with right deal I'd think it would be no risk for us. In case Muzzin is out for the season, if we end up having log jam it's always easy to trade away defender at trade deadline. Every year players like Holl and Bear fetch something, since you need extra dman for playoff run. That's why I think keeping Holl was good move, since if we end being in the need at TDL it's pricey as hell. Players like Chiarot fetch atrocious packages just because there is more demand than capable players.

If you acquire player like Schenn at deadline it's sure it will be for overpayment.

If Muzzin is out for the season Murphy makes so much sense.

Rielly-Murphy
Gio-Brodie
Sandin-Lily

Or any combination of LD-RD. Chicago seems to be actively shopping all their players. I would love to see the Leafs grab Lafferty too to play on the 4th line. He’s also signed through next year.
Murphy would be great and likely the only upgrade on Holl people are bringing up that may be available.

I'd rather we stop doing the "let's give it a try and see if it works" type moves. I mean I'm not against them the frequency is just getting too high lately.
