Orlov, no. Upcoming UFA means he’d be a futures package. Provorov is an all situations #1D. Not amazing, but about as good as Muzzin was, which is to say a fantastic hockey player. Age 25, 3 years left on his deal, he’s only on the table if a player like Nylander is in the deal.

Nylander is not our 2nd best player. Marner is and it’s not particularly close. The argument between them ended nearly four years ago. Nylander always had the upside to be on Marner’s level and he’s a better goal scorer, but Marner is a 100p caliber winger who plays the most ice time on our team. Nylander is an electrifying talent, but he is *only* a PPG winger.
Swap Nylander with Marner on that top line and give him the same minutes as Marner minus the PK time, Nylander will be pushing for 100 points also.

Nylander and Matthews played together for three years. Marner scored 94p on the line with Tavares.

Marner had 97p in 72gp last year, this really isn’t close. They play on the same PP unit and we watch these guys every game. Nylander is good enough that he’s our best player many many nights, sometimes for an entire month. Marner is a top5 winger in hockey. Come on.

Lol sure. This ignores that Nylander was on the top line with Matthews 2 1/2 years ago when Marner was putting up over 90 points with Tavares.
And even if they were equal offensively which is far from a proven fact then the defensive side of Marner’s game would still be vastly superior.

This seems to happen every season. Marner starts slow. Some weird Nylander fans start on about how Nylander is the better player. Marner breaks out and does what Marner does and they get quiet again.

They are both great players can’t we just be happy about that?

Marner's off to a great start comparatively to last season (1 assist in 7 games). To think, Marner ended up getting 96 points in 65 games after his atrocious start last season.

Hey maybe Dubas will shock the hockey world and if Columbus continues to stay at the bottom of the standings he’ll make a blockbuster trade like Knies, Sandin and a 1st for Werenski. Jk people don’t go trying to take my head off now lol
Knies is not an asset to be traded.

He has the potential to be a very significant and important ELC for us.

Orlov and Provolov are better targets, but neither one should cost us our second-best player.
I don’t see the Capitals, or the Flyers being sellers right now. Maybe that changes later in the year though.

If Muzzin is done, I’d rather make a trade sooner than later.

Its shitty as i dont see a lot out west that is available that would give the desired impact

The only teams that might look to blow it up early would be the Canucks or Sharks ... neither really have that d-man you're looking for.

Maybe Myers with retention? But he plays the right side.

At what? Advanced stats EV defense shows Schenn is actually quite good at what we'd need him to do and would bring some elements the team lacks.

Visually? Holl is hot garbage and isn't an NHL level defenseman.

Schenn's been a monster the last 5 games and doing better with added ice time. He's being trusted as the defensive guy for Hughes at 5v5;

Schenn gets sheltered minutes and actually has more offensive zone starts than defensive zone starts the last 3 years and has gotten caved in possession wise despite having easier competitipn.

Holl has predominately played on the top shutdown pair for us the past 3 seasons, and while we could use an upgrade, he was excellent when dropped to the 3rd pair last year and a similar role to what Schenn has had the last 3 seasons. Quality of competition and zone starts are a huge factor.

Be very careful of a 5 game window in which he still wasn't a game breaker by any means.

Our ideal replacement is on the right side. Chicago is a team that would deal. Murphy is likely the guy.

Wouldn't Schenn be the perfect partner for Rielly then? Same role as he would have now with Hughes, Rielly gets sheltered zone starts.

I don't expect Schenn to be a game breaker at all, just steady and to do a Ron Hainsey impression for us and save some $$ although looks like Engvall is likely to be the odd man out if we ever get fully healthy again.

Is Marner better? Same number of goals. Yes, he had 16 more assists playing on the top line with the best scorer in the league, while Nylander had to deal with JT, who managed 33 fewer goals.

Regardless, Provorov isn't worth either one.

No because like I said Schenn is still not good enough possession wise to keep up offensively in a role like that. 46%CF despite almost 52% of his starts being in the offensive zone against non-elite talent isn't good at all.

Similar to how Boosh with Rielly didn't work in the playoffs against above average competition.

The ideal partner for Rielly is actually Liljegren but unfortunately we got sub .800 goaltending for the stretch they played together despite dominating possession and scoring chances. We let in a tonne of weak shots from the point and Keefe never trusted that pair afterwards.

Unfortunate because that correlated with the Matthews line going nuclear for a week before the stretch run.

Looks like he has above 50% CF but this year crazy offensive zone starts. We could also try to keep in mind that last year and this year, Vancouver is not that great.

I would like a better player than Schenn but cost to acquire, our assets etc says he's at least affordable.

I would have jumped at the chance for Liljegren but keeping expectations low with his return, hernias are so damn hard to come back from.

Are the Boston Bruins one of a plethora of NHL teams on the NHL trade market searching for help on the right side of their blue line?

On the latest TSN ‘Insider Trading‘ episode, Darren Dreger listed four of the five NHL teams in Canada as being in the hunt for a defenseman on the NHL Trade market.

“Look, there’s a growing list of Canadian teams that are in the market for a defenseman – you know, Chychrun is high-rent and the ask is tremendous, so we’ll see whether the likes of Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton or Vancouver are going to buckle and pay that price or they’ll look elsewhere,” Dreger said.

That prompted yours truly to make a few calls to some NHL executives and scouts on Tuesday and this is what we’ve gathered:

If the price was right, regardless of their massive depth on the left side of their blue line, the Boston Bruins will surely be in on Jakob Chychrun when those NHL trade talks pick up.

“I think depending on their health in the coming weeks or months, [Matt] Grzelcyk or Carlo could be in play for a guy like Chychrun,” one NHL executive told Boston Hockey Now Tuesday. “Can you imagine a left side with – say they don’t trade Grzelcyk – [Hampus] Lindholm, Chychrun and him down the left?”

Could see that trend occurring with some teams kinda like the tampa model.. a stacked left side so you are in good shape no matter what pairing is on the ice and simple capable right side.. even with one cernak mixed in

If your getting Zach Weresnki and all your giving up is Knies + Sandin + 1st that's a no brainer

Werenski makes to much but pretending that he doesn't bring back a prospect much better than Knies is absurd

Werenski is elite. Top 15D already and a fantastic shooter. Untouchable for the Jackets

Werenski obviously brings back that package and more but why give up all our best trade assets to fill a hole that isn’t there and not do anything to address the holes that we do have.
We have a purely offensive LHD powerplay specialist. Sure Werenski is better than the one we have but it’s still not a hole on a roster that has a bunch.

We could deal rielly for a physical RHD if we got this move to fall

But yeah it's not workable due to cap

Eh, while I think the team could potentially use a Schenn type guy, I wouldn't want him getting that prime icetime. I don't think Schenn has the hockey IQ that Hainsey had, especially when it comes to making quick passes

The Jakob Chychrun sweepstakes are inching closer to a resolution.

Still on the shelf with a wrist injury, the Arizona Coyotes defenceman has had the rumour mill buzzing since before last season’s trade deadline. The reason for the intrigue is clear enough — standing six-foot-two and tipping the scales at 220 pounds, the 24-year-old is only a season removed from a breakout campaign that saw him lead all blue-liners with 18 goals, totalling 41 points through 56 games.

Better still, his rare blend of physicality and offensive prowess is under contract for two more years after this one at just $4.6 million per season, a steal of a cap hit.

But a deal to move Chychrun has yet to come to fruition. And according to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek, the Coyotes’ asking price has been the central obstacle to this point.

“Look, the Arizona Coyotes want to trade Jacob Chychrun. Jacob Chychrun has also asked for a trade. The price for the defenceman remains high,” Marek said Saturday during Hockey Night in Canada’s 32 Thoughts segment. “It's essentially the equivalent of two first-round draft picks, plus. So, that would be a combination of prospects, picks and players as well.”

......................

Again, however, Arizona's hefty asking price has stalled talks on a potential trade.

“It doesn't sound like the Ottawa Senators — although there has been some talk between the two — they don't want to let go of Shane Pinto or Ridly Greig or Jake Sanderson or anyone like that,” Marek said Saturday. “That doesn't seem to be a path they're on.”

..........................

Marek suggested the Los Angeles Kings as a potential landing spot for the former Sarnia Sting defenceman.
