So is Liljegren a very good top 4 defenseman? By those stats, why isn't he playing more of a shutdown role and why is he averaging the 5th most average time on ice per game for Leafs defense?

I understand that he's having a very good year. He's been more consistent than last year. But are you suggesting he's in the same breath as Toews, Makar and Spurgeon?
He's arguably the best all-round D on the team now.

He's closer to a top-2 than bottom pairing.

There is no metric or eye test than can say anything differently, unless there is a massive personal bias against this player..

What would the Leafs have needed to do to beat that?
I proposed Hirvonen + Protected 1st for Horvat (50% retained) earlier today. I think the Islanders beat that offer with this trade. It would come down to Islanders managements views of the Leafs prospects. Minten/Niemela/Holmberg/Tverberg/Robertson would be in a similar tier to Raty. Depending on their preference they could have been more coveted. The Leafs don't really have a Beauvillier like contract on the roster. He comes at a high cap hit for his production, so his value may not be that much extra.

Kerfoot/Engvall + One of the above prospects + Protected 2023 1st rd. pick would have been a comparable offer.

I'm not suggesting he's a bad player. Are you saying, based on the metrics, he's as good as Makar?

Since Kerfoot (imo) is not as good as or as young as Beauvillier and he's a pending UFA, I'd think another asset at least would be tacked on to that deal, maybe Ottawa's 3rd or the 2024 2nd. It also depends how teams view Raty vs. Robertson, but that is digging very deep.
Beauvillier's never had a 40 point season. Kerfoot has 3, including 51 points last season.

IMO, Beauvillier at $4.2 until the end of next season is more of a cap dump than anything else.

That’s probably a big piece that should get some things moving, I would assume. Also, if that’s helping to set the market, I like what we can do with what we have, if we want to make a move.

Thats strawman. No he isn't suggesting that. What he is saying is Liljegren has been playing really well and like a top 4 d man. Since the injuries, his level is risen. We need more games to see if he can continue it, but signs are promising. There isn't a Lilly level player in the deal.

Pretty much I am at. I don't think Isles did bad. I think it's alright but still a risky trade. They don't have much in the prospect pool and traded their best one. They need to resign him or have a decent run this season. Maybe both to make it worthwhile.
Big thing is I didn't want him in Boston so I'm happy with it.

Canucks got:
A 40 point player who'll be 26 in June.
Got potential in:
Ratay.
A pick in the teens?

Not bad for a rebuilding team.
Nothing that makes you go WOW!

Nevermind the contractual status of Lilly Vs Beauvillier…

How many playoff teams had the space to take on Horvats contract? If Vancouver retains, that ups the price significantly.

There is a chance the pick is Top 12 this year. If the draft was today, NYI picks 13th.

If it slides down into the Top 12, the pick is unprotected next year. That's brutal.
Horvat is 5.5mil and Beauviller is 4.5mil, I highly doubt cap space is an issue. Heck, even the Leafs can get Horvat without sending any salaries out due to LTIR Muzzin.

You are also assuming Islanders would be worst by next year, to me, I think they will be where they are now and could move up or down a few spots here and there. One of those teams that you just won't be surprise if they make the playoffs or just miss it.

Also, what if Islanders miss the playoffs this year and win Bedard draft, won't that make Islanders a better team thus that unprotected first next year will be higher.
So imagine they extend Horvat, miss the playoffs and draft Bedard. That could happen. Or they cant extend Horvat, miss out on Top 5 picks this year and their next year pick ends up with Nucks while being the 1st overall. That could happen too.

Comparison of 2 players. 2021-22 season (Liljegren's first full season)

Player 1: Timothy Liljegren - Position RD. Cap hit: $1.4 million until 2024

Games played 61 GP, ES Goals: 4G, ES Assists: 17, ES Points: 21

Player 2: Anthony Beauvillier - Position LW. Cap hit: $4.15 million until 2024

Games Played: 75 GP, ES Goals: 7G, ES Assists: 16, ES Points: 23

Respect where respect is due.

Thanks Lou for taking Horvat off the table from Bruins

RESPECT!

;)
Just glad Horvat didn't go to TB or Bruins. Not only are we scoreboard watching, we are trade watching too, lol.

Who play D again? Bc their goals and points are pretty much the same, lol.

No clue. My best guess would be Kerfoot, Robertson and our 1st round pick maybe. I'm sure most teams are higher on Raty than they are Robertson so maybe Knies?
I would think the Leafs would do that in a heartbeat
