Agreed to an extent, but I'm pretty sure if one was a Vancouver fan, one wouldn't be thrilled knowing that the only piece that is coming back and playing for your team this season is arguably a cap dump.

I wouldn't be happy if I was an Islanders fan either

If anything I think they should be selling there pending UFA'S, getting as many futures as possible and trying to think up a way of getting out from under some of those long term deals they signed

This is a meh team that is just going to sit in that 8-10 range with few ways of getting significantly better

I have no idea how I feel about this trade besides how I don't like it for both teams.

New York paid what feels like not a lot, but they're also a bad, flawed team and Horvat's entire value has stemmed from a random ability to put the puck in the net at an insane rate the last two years. Very bad defensively, and doesn't drive offense overly well either. Basically got the shooting version of Barzal lol. He's a fine piece to help complete a top-6, but he's what, their best F now? 2nd? Better hope Sorokin can keep up his season and they barely slide into playoffs. A big extension could be real bad too because basically his *entire* value has been from his goal scoring.

For Vancouver I think they did fine in a vacuum, but he's the clear best rental on the market and they only got a B+ prospect, a bad contract and what will end up being a mid-round 1st. Just feels weird they pulled the trigger today when they could have waited to see if a team would get more desperate closer to the deadline. I like Raty apparently more than most on the main board, but even then, meh?

I like it for both teams.

Vancouver wasn't going to get a better offer. A possible mid-1st in a deep draft, an NHL-ready prospect with top 6 upside, and a mid-20's middle-6 forward with more offensive upside than he showed in New York and could be flipped for more assets next year.

Horvat checks all of the boxes for the Islanders too. They desperately needed someone who could win draws in their top 6 (Barzal is literally the worst faceoff guy in the league out of anyone who takes them with any kind of regularity and Nelson is below-average), they desperately needed someone who could put pucks in the net, and they desperately needed someone who could help them grind out wins when he can't skill it up. His defensive metrics probably start looking a lot better away from VAN too... Because their defensive structure has been practically non-existent for years. I assume he is getting re-signed so that gives them a pretty strong center group for the foreseeable future.

I think NYI are banking on Horvat turning into a Tavares-lite.

I'm not suggesting he's a bad player. Are you saying, based on the metrics, he's as good as Makar?
He never said anything about Makar. You were way off on Lily evaluation and now have completely lost touch with the conversation. Take the loss as a learning moment and move on. Not every top 4 dmen automatically are Makars. Lol.

Is Dubas gonaa wait till TDL when prices are sky high or last minute when firesale occurs at lower prices? Or Dubas ain't adding anything and just gonna go with what we have?

Horvat at that price... damn... I have no idea why Lamoriello does that trade but I think it would have a great one for Boston or Toronto.

It's always funny seeing the initial trade prices from fans on their top UFA and what actually happens.

So no bidding war for Horvat.

Looks like it. Imagine Lou retaining 50% on the already 25% retained on Horvat and getting an even bigger haul if Isles are out of playoff contention?

Would be the first one to ever pull a move like that in teh history of the league I guess.

Think Beregvin did that with a Dman on the Habs not sure did he retained any salaries.

The Isles did that with Vanek in the 2013-14 season.

Problem is they have a new arena. So whether Lou was in charge or someone else, they were always going to compete. Not something I necessarily agree with, but at the same time, it would have been a long and tenuous rebuild regardless. Raty and that first is not going to make much of a difference with the state of their pool and their team. Nobody is giving up serious assets for their aging forwards. Maybe someone would give up something good for Pelech and Pulock, and of course guys like Sorokin, Barzal, Wahlstrom, Dobson, etc. are valuable but they are also probably not available.

I think they like their defense for the most part. Probably want to upgrade Aho if Bolduc can't do it but otherwise Sorokin has been able to carry their butts enough that they likely feel confident with a healthy group. Sorokin has been arguably the best goalie in the league this year.

So it really came down to getting that top 6 center and upgrading Bailey + Aho. Horvat checks the first box, they could use Bolduc to upgrade Aho (either directly or using him as an asset), and then they still have most of their picks available to find an upgrade for Bailey while also dumping his contract.

Looks like he’s trying to change that.
(Because) Time isn't on his team's side at the moment. Kudos to him for offering up a Beauvillier to a team that seemingly isn't trying to outright tank. It's obviously far too early right now to tell how well this trade will or won't work out for either team.

What is a bigger haul though? Which team firmly in the playoffs, has better draft picks, than they just gave up? Clearly if they are getting a 1st rounder, it's going to be lower than the one that they just gave up... maybe they get one next year in the deal too? Maybe an upgrade on the prospects?

It's still January man... no need to panic.

Not a fan of the isles-Nucks deal for either side. Isles get better at treading water and get out in a pressure position to overpay on an extension (if he even agrees in the first place) and an aging core group lose our on future youth injections.

Nucks get a nice 1st round pick that should be in the mid teens but not much else for a top six center.

A great case that it's by far a buyers market. Drop any type of Knies trade talk. b prospects and picks only

Whats the over/under Isles flip Bo at the TDL for about the same or better return because they are not making the playoffs?

:dunno:

There's a realistic chance that happens
