Seems unlikely to me that the Leafs could make one or a series of trades that solves their scoring woes up front and solidifies the defense. Just feels like a problem where you need to meaningfully carve out a massive amount of cap space by swapping out half a dozen bodies and bring in half a dozen new ones for the middle class of the team through a combination of promotion, trade and signings.

Exactly. The guys we can trade for help are the guys we need and the ones we can't trade for help are the ones we want to improve on. There's no middle ground in cap hits or ability.

That's why the stars and scrubs has always been a stupid idea.

Worse yet, he chose to keep the vast majority of the group together that has failed numerous times. Off-season is the time to do this.

You always hear Dubas talk about his belief in certain people, the group, the vision, etc. It's always so emphatic and impassioned but is it so much to ask for tough personnel decisions to be made when necessary? If you need a heavy hitting defenseman, by all means go get a healthy one.

Or people say "How can you trade Muzzin? He's our physical / defensive defenseman"

Why the f*** haven't we tried to at least draft one once in a while? I get Hunter failed, MISERABLY but it doesn't mean literally never try to find some nasty guys.

Kind of wonder if the organization knew Muzzin was in rough shape in the offseason? The way Mitch was talking about his future and quality of life wasn't exactly like a see you in 2 weeks kind of comment. If so, and they saw him in training camp, I dunno. $5.6 million could have bought you a lot of versatility in the offseason if they could have made a decision to LTIR him for the upcoming season.

So who is a team who is looking to move out players, who wants picks / prospects?

My ideal target would be Carson Soucy.

$2.75m, plays both sides, and is a good two way guy who can PK. Move Holl for him @50%, and pay the premium in picks + prospects. Seattle only has 42 contracts, so move a contract or two out as well. They have a ton of cap room to boot. Could also be a good landing spot for Simmonds, as they could use some toughness with the youth they have in the lineup.

He looked good with Gio on a top pairing last year.
Could do..
Reilly - Soucy/Brodie
Gio - Brodie/Soucy
Sandin - Liljgren
Muzzin goes in when healthy, and you rotate him Sandin and Liljgren to keep everyone healthy and rested.

With Weegar now extended, Murphy is another one I like.

Wondering between Connor Murphy and Matt Roy in LA, who is the better fit, more likely to be available, and for what price in a trade?

Thoughts?

Yes, Connor Murphy. Wonder what the price would be on him in trade. He's locked up for a number of years though.

Kind of why I’m leaning Matt Roy.

RHD, blocks shots, UFA in 2024, and I think we make good trading partners as already demonstrated in past Muzzin and Campbell trades.

We have excess forwards and they seem pretty flush on D at the moment….

It’s hard to say who would be a better fit for on ice reasons. You just kinda have to guess.
But off ice I think Murphy would be much easier to get.
Chicago is in the hunt for Bedard Vs the Kings who think they are a playoff team and are trying to move into contender status. I don’t see LA moving him unless you blow them away.
As for contracts Roy is cheaper and Murphy is signed longer. That is all about what you prefer.

He is but the cap hit is decent and if we were willing to pay for it we could probably get retention. Chicago isn’t going to be competitive for a while.

If I was confident Connor Murphy was completely healthy, he's easily the best fit - probably the best fit of any player in the league actually. He's been the ideal target for Morgan Rielly's wingman for like 5 years - 6'4" right-handed defenseman with borderline elite skating ability and plays a physical stay-at-home style....

Yeah I’m super high on Murphy. To the point that I’m worried that I have blinders on. I have wanted the Leafs to trade for him for years.

As a player, I love him, but he's got some weird off-ice issues. I'm not sure what exactly to believe with some of it.

You should think that Chicago would be open to moving anyone over 25 for sure.... who knows what they are actually thinking. Murphy could be a good target. He's certainly had a history of injuries though, hip, groin, concussion...

Our 4th line has been terrible so far this year. We need better from them...

Chicago fan as well, he's perfect except for durability. We have Muzzin already, wouldn't go that route.

Lol, I’m dumb. I read an article a year ago about a bodybuilder with the same name and thought he was the same guy.
Lol. I ran across same articles. They even sorta looked similar. Other than one was really jacked.
