Then put holmberg with him.. if he can drive it he drives it.. but you gotta have someone that will be back
holmberg is fine and nylander will be back as well - he is postionally very sound. If you're going to put william in the third line he needs to be C and needs at least some semblance of offensive talent.

We wont know who can contribute until it is actually tried and run with

Can try engvall tavares jarnkrok and then robertson kampf nylander

I dont see any purpose to the third line as it is now

I would love kane
I like that your lineup still has knies and robertson.. if i am chicago one of those is involved or take a hike

If they are swinging for the fences they may be prudent getting a defenceman first if they can.. when you get deep in the playoffs you see holl cutting it? Muzzin healthy? Giordano not fatigued?

See what you have at forward now ffs.. dubas should have set the tone for this entire season with his presser first day of camp - it had a message and a tone

If keefe f***s around after that then he missed the memo

It was wasn't an argument. It was mocking incredulity at the idea that JT is overmatched as a 2c. He's lost a step. No longer a top 10C. But a 3C?
He only looks "mediocre" because of a combination of a boring cerebral playstyle and playing in the shadow of three dynamic talents- top 2, 5, and 10 at their positions respectively
I guess "boring cerebral playstyle" is an alternate way of saying "slow".

On some teams he would still be a 2C.

If he doesn't mesh well with the "dynamic talent ... 10 at (his) position", which do you think should be dropped to the third line?

"Boring cerebral playstyle" is an alternate way of saying casual fans are going to significantly undervalue him, and focus exclusively on his speed to downplay him, despite the fact that speed was never integral to his success.

Tavares is a 1st-line quality player. He would be in the top-six on every single team in the league. Putting him at 3C would be a waste, and he's meshing just fine with Nylander so far (just like he did for the majority of their time together).

Yeah? Where would you have played Robertson?

Sounds great.

What dman and tough scoring winger do we add in exchange for Engvall, Kerfoot and Sandin?

Trades have to work for both teams and I am not sure we can upgrade our F and D and fit under the cap by trading two UFA forwards and Sandin.

I would love to hear your ideas because I am open to moving all three, I don't see upgrades incoming when you factor in their contracts, they work for us but don't offer a lot of value in a trade to a building a team and contending teams don't have cap room.
I meant we cant trade Holl , Ian not sure about Sandin.

Trade Deadline
Kerfoot and Engvall
For a tough scoring winger

Bring up
Robertson or Holmberg

If we want to create three scoring lines, I would be curious to see:

Bunting / Matthews / Malgin
Robertson / Tavares / Marner
Engvall / Jarnkrok / Nylander
NAK / Kampf / ZAR

This leaves Kerfoot as the odd man out of course. He could literally swap in on any of the top 3 lines, depending on who is hurt, who is hot, who you want to sit. I am not suggesting sitting Kerfoot...he can give Engvall, Robertson and Malgin a push to perform to keep their roles.

I think it is time Marner and Matthews each drive their own lines. Each line has scoring and a defensive conscience. These combinations working could allow us to trade a Kerfoot or Engvall as well.

It'll take some time for sellers to emerge and needs to evolve.

There's always a couple teams that really surprise one way or another. I'd keep an eye on the Anaheim Ducks and Klingberg and/or Comtois. Also if the Wild have an off-year, I'd inquire about Matt Dumba and/or M. Foligno.

It'll also depend on injuries and cap space by the dead line. I do think that we're a bit more in need of a RHD than a forward, but things can change fast. I think a little more speed from the backend would be welcome right about now.

I dont mind 2 or 3 at all but malgin is not sharp enouhh to het matthews the puck like marner can.. that would be the drop there

I hate to say it, but if we could bring in Josh Anderson with $ retained, I feel like he would be an excellent fit in our top 6. I bet he will be available.

The point being, the contract is too large, so either you have to carry it, or compensate Montreal for retaining for 5 years...and what exactly are you going to trade for him, with X% retained? Why is Montreal going to do that, and retain for FIVE years?

I’d be open to acquiring Anderson even without any retention. Looking at our lineup, I’d rather have Anderson at 5.5 over Kerfoot and Engvall at 5.75. Opens a permanent spot for Robertson also.

Personally, I wouldn't call his playstyle either boring or cerebral.

And, yes, there are a few teams where he would still be 1C.

He and Willy both produce well when they are in the ice at the same time, especially on the PP, but that doesn't necessarily mean they mesh well.

I think they are each capable of driving their own line, and I'd like to see it. Call them 2A and 2B if that makes you happy.

I mean Anderson hits, and is pretty good at scoring goals once in a blue moon, but otherwise isn't very good at hockey. I don't even understand why people are in love with this guy... he's literally mediocre overall.

Engvall last year, 15 g 20 a 35 pts -> 0:34 PP/G... and three points
Anderson last year 17 g 13 a, 30 pts. 2:07 PP/G... and three points.

Engvall is good at the PK, Anderson is not.

If Engvall was as physical as Anderson, he'd be the better player, and it wouldn't really be close, and Engvall himself isn't all that special... heck we have a whole thread dedicated to whether at $2.25 million he should be moved, but hey, let's replace him with a guy who makes exactly double, and doesn't really do much more.

The idea here is to get better as a team, not worse.

if Anderson played all the time like he seems to do when he plays the Leafs, I could see the appeal, but he doesn’t.

Factor in the cost to get him and his cap hit, I’m good with Montreal continuing to foot that bill for the duration of his contract.

What is painfully obvious to me is our next major trade needs to be on defence. Injuries exposed how thin we are, and as much as I really like Muzzin, Giordano, and Brodie, we are counting very heavily on an almost 40 year old in Gio and Muzzin, whom we realistically have to be prepared for a drop or compromise in his play.

Our ultra competitive training camp shows me not only do we have the quantity in our forwards pipeline, but also the quality for us to be confident in our forward depth.

That wasn’t even including 2 of our top forward prospects in Knies and Roni, who I think have solid potential to plug into our lineup sooner than later. We also are seeing Robertson continue to develop and show he belongs in our top 6.

If we are going to expend assets and roster players in a trade, it really needs to be a Top 4 RHD. It’s been such a hole for years now.

Right after RHD, particularly if Murray’s health continues to be a concern as I expect it to be, really concerned that Samsonov can step in and carry a starting goalie position for an entire season. He’s done well so far, but it’s asking an awful lot and betting an awful lot on a guy who has never played as a starter to take us deep into the playoffs.

RHD and net is where I’m hoping we get stronger. Actually feeling really good at forward for the first time in forever. Especially looking forward to seeing Knies slot in. His style will fit JT’s like a glove and will bring some much needed size.

Exactly. RD, and if I can expand on that, it should be someone who can replace what Muzzin brings. Strong defensively and physical, but who can skate and play as well. It doesn't have to be a RHD, just a RD. Incidentally, Chychrun plays RD quite a bit... but isn't the defensive presence that I believe we need.

I'm not even sure where such a player is going to come from at the moment. In UFA's next year, you see Scott Mayfield... but he's 29 right now, and eventually he's going to hit the same wall Muzzin is currently. So, maybe four or five years out of Mayfield?

In the past, you've seen guys like Manson, and Weegar come up, and show promise. Who are the next guys, that's who we should target? Maybe a guy like Andrew Peeke? Columbus just extended him, and like him a lot, so that could be difficult.

A short-term goalie solution that I had thought about... was Reimer. But Sharks are tight to the cap, and tight to the number of contracts too. A deal with them would be incredibly difficult due to the Cap and contract restrictions. Sharks appear to be firmly in the Bedard sweepstakes, so competing this year probably isn't all that important.

I'd be trying to talk to Nashville about Trenin or Tomasino. I do think defense is much more of a need though. At the deadline I'd be looking at d like zub, Mayfield, Soucy, Graves, Gavrikov etc.

Anderson makes too much but if all things were equal you easily take him over Engvall.
I believe Anderson would put up huge numbers on this team.

Anderson would be better offensively, but Engvall is much better defensively.

I’m not sure what this team needs is more guys who are good offensively and weak defensively.
