For todays Cap it is. I imagine that his camp will point to the high cap increase Bettman released not to long ago (I know th numbers aren’t firm, but with the cap going to near 90 mill in the next few years, a AAV starting with a 3 will be difficult to make happen IMO). Looking at what Hyman and Mikheyev got he’d have to be the first in his ILK of players to want to be a sweetheart and choose a hometown discount.

Nick Paul just signed for 3.1m x 8, I don't see why we would pay Bunting a full million more per year x 8.

8 years at 3.75 to 4 million is absolutely fair for Bunting.

What are his strengths and assets?

Is he good defensively?
Is he capable of driving any line?
Can he penalty kill?

What exactly is the team going to pay for?

How effective would he be on the 3rd. line?
...

I'm not sure they aren't going to end up paying for a glorified bottom 6 player riding on a line with 2 elite all stars.

It is nice he is doing well there, but would Knies/Robertson/Amirov/? be just as effective at going into scrums and going to space?

I'm more inclined to let him walk.

This is the way.

Some names that might be available by the TDL:

  1. Orlov
  2. Dumulin
  3. Gavrikov
  4. Soucy
  5. Jensen
  6. Mayfield

We need some defenceman a yr away from making the big club. We have a supply of forwards with the Marlies.
Muzzin and Gio replacements .
We have smal dman Lilly sandin and the dman in Finland.
We don't seem to have toughness like muzzin and Gio.

I think Bunting is a fine player but not someone I'd be upset at losing, like I was upset when we lost Hyman.

Didn't he get benched last night?

I think we have internal options that can replace him as soon as next year in Robertson/Knies.
If they can get him on a great deal with a low AAV I hope the re-sign him. His play style would work on any line. But your right that we definitely have internal opinions to replace him. Arguably our top 3 forward prospects are LWs
It all depends on what he is asking for.

Thats a fair opinion and you could easily be right. I disagree but time will tell I guess.

Would need to be via trade as you’ve said. - we just haven’t drafted those types of players. We don’t seem to have any snarl (at all) this year. Doesn’t necessarily mean failure, but it’s more notable than last year when they had Simmer and Clifford.

Wonder what snarly D can be had for picks and B-prospects.

With Robertson, Knies, Amirov, Steeves, etc.....I would be hesitant to shell out even mid-tier $$$ ($3.5 million +) for Bunting.

For one reason, he'll be 28 by the time his next contract starts.....and the second reason is that his playing style doesn't tend to age well.

Except for Matthews, and Mcdavid but yes lunacy.

What do you mean...Foppa did it...Oh...I see what you mean.

Jokes aside I think Ovi is the true powerforward that has sustained for such a long period of time.

I think our #1 goal for this year needs to be fixing RD#2 long term. I love Lilly, but if we can find a defensive stallwart who can play there with Muzzin in this years playoffs, I would do it. Someone like Orlov, Soucy, etc. Physical, can skate, can take some defensive zone starts.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - RD
Gio - Lilly

I do not want to go into the playoffs with Sandin or Holl in our lineup. It's too soft and too slow.

Great point kb. We're not short on wingers from an organization standpoint. I would miss his jam but we might be able to find others to fill that void.

Mayfield could be available as well. Pretty good defensively, provides some size and physicality, decent skater, PK's.... might be more of a 5/6 guy long-term, but if Muzzin can continue to play like he did last night...

and Holl himself had a decent night last night, he's really good on the PK..... but he needs to play a more conservative game.

Montreal now regrets the Gallagher deal and Tor might regret the Bunting deal in year 4+

Sign him to a 8 year x 4 million deal, pad the heck out of his stats, and then trade him 1:1 for Chychrun.

You don't let Bunting walk because you're banking on 3 non-blue chip prospects who aren't even in the league. Sign him and trade him 4-5 years when their bridge is up if you want. Those kids won't walk right into a 1st line role so i'd rather not have a Galchenyuk there for years until they do.

The Bunting question honestly is pretty easy IMO. Wait out the year and see how hes done - does he put up 60 points (mostly even strength) and drive play?

8 years is absolutely fine under the assumption its driving the AAV significantly below market value (IE 3.5 x 8). I don't know that he should take that - but if he wants to stay in Toronto - that's absolutely fine. Even if you expect him to fall off by year 5 of the deal - the cap will be over 100M and he'll be 3.5%. Buriable salary will be closer (or over) 2M in the AHL. All of this is why I don't think he should sign that.

Of course signing anyone his age to 8 years is insanity - but what makes it insane is when you're doing it at a market rate to beat out other teams and kick the problem can down the road. If you're getting slightly over the Nick Paul number - I have absolutely no issue with that because you're getting an absolute bargain.

If you can fit in his contract without jeopardizing re-signing others in the subsequent season, sure why not.

However, going from a part-time NHLer to a 60 point player next to 2 players who are ~ 100 point players doesn't make him irreplaceable.

He's a great fit there and had 63 points, but we shouldn't conflate that into a 1st. liner.

Tikkanen wasn't a first liner, but did well with Gretz.
