I have two thoughts on the Bunting situation.

1. If you find someone that works well with your two best offensive players, then I think you try your best to keep them around. This is the Crosby situation where he felt comfortable with Dupuis and Kunitz.

2. You can't keep Bunting at anything north of 4mill. He is truly a complementary player and as soon as he's separated from the top line, will have trouble driving play.

Meloche just cleared waivers. I don't think he's that great but he does have NHL experience and he's a RHD. Could fit the Marlies depth.

If it touches 7-8 years, it's gotta be in the 3's for sure.

I would love it if Bunting took less than $4mill AAV on a long term deal but he’s the kind of player I would never fault for chasing the bag.

He’s had his first full NHL season at 26 and relative to other NHL players, he has not made that much money.

When the big guys who get the big endorsement deals don’t take market value or a “discount”, why should he?

The cold hard fact is if he wasn't playing with two of the best play drivers in the entire league nobody in there right mind would be talking 7-8 years or 3+ million

Put somebody with an ECL or making a million bucks with those two and spend the money elsewhere

I would remind people that 3-4 million is a good start if you want to buy a top 4 defenseman or good 3rd line center

I've thought about it more, I would need to know 100% Matthews is signing the extension July 1st.

I'm sure his agent will talk some sense into him.
This may be his only payday, he needs to make it a good one.

Exactly

It all comes down to contract structure. The Leafs are the only team that can go 8 years - which has the put more guaranteed money into his bank account than say a team in free agency offering a 3ish year contract with a much higher aav.

Longer term Job security + locked in retirement money may be a very tempting offer to pass on.

Yes he’ll have some decisions to make.

Matthews signing would have no baring on my decision either way

But I'm not having a 30 million dollar 1st line when everybody is resigned, money needs to be allocated to other areas to

If Matthews isn't re-signing, we're rebuilding, no need to spend 3-4M on Bunting for 7-8 years at that point IMO.

Kings have wayyyy too many RD currently.

Muzzin for either of Walker or Roy please.

Muzzin needs to go to Hotel Robidas, but there's no one to spend the money on unless you go find some offer sheets to throw around.

Blue line needs an injection of speed skill iq and physicality.

Muzzin Holl need to go. Muzzin more so because I've ran out of patience gambling on key positions. He can't be trusted for 4 rounds in the playoffs. I want a cup not just a first round win.

Muzzin and Holl are way too slow, Sandin has always been slow too but at least he's a good puck handler and tries to be physical.

But to me we need that top D man that can do it all, enough speed, skill, size, physicality.

Muzzin looked so much better in last year's playoffs. A bit shocking to see him waffle around out there last night. Seemed like he could barely bend his knees or turn his hips, and everytime he bodied someone, he was knocked off balance.

8 years at 3.75 to 4 million is absolutely fair for Bunting.

For todays Cap it is. I imagine that his camp will point to the high cap increase Bettman released not to long ago (I know th numbers aren’t firm, but with the cap going to near 90 mill in the next few years, a AAV starting with a 3 will be difficult to make happen IMO). Looking at what Hyman and Mikheyev got he’d have to be the first in his ILK of players to want to be a sweetheart and choose a hometown discount.
