Every player has issues when they hit the waiver wire. That's the whole point. You won't get a star 99% of the time. I think someone like Mahura would be a very good target to stash and develop further, he has a lot of similar tools to Dermott.
And yeah, it's mostly about trading for them once they clear, if they clear. There's no cap or contract spots available right now for a claim, unless things change in the next day or so. They certainly aren't better than anything we have.
The problem is, you need space on your NHL roster for them and typically these guys are better off in the AHL to get development time.
So unless it is a guy who looks like they can contribute right away (i.e. Valimaki), it doesn't really make sense to claim them. Other teams might, but they end up just sucking anyways. Pretty much all of the guys who have hit waivers are no better than the guys we have on the Marlies or hitting waivers ourselves right now. And they do not fit on the Leafs unless we have a string of injuries to very specific players.
It is too bad some better defensemen did not hit waivers. That is actually a spot that made sense for a waiver claim. We have a handful of Marlies who are just as good, if not better, than all of the forwards and goalies who have hit waivers.
