Every player has issues when they hit the waiver wire. That's the whole point. You won't get a star 99% of the time. I think someone like Mahura would be a very good target to stash and develop further, he has a lot of similar tools to Dermott.

And yeah, it's mostly about trading for them once they clear, if they clear. There's no cap or contract spots available right now for a claim, unless things change in the next day or so. They certainly aren't better than anything we have.

The problem is, you need space on your NHL roster for them and typically these guys are better off in the AHL to get development time.

So unless it is a guy who looks like they can contribute right away (i.e. Valimaki), it doesn't really make sense to claim them. Other teams might, but they end up just sucking anyways. Pretty much all of the guys who have hit waivers are no better than the guys we have on the Marlies or hitting waivers ourselves right now. And they do not fit on the Leafs unless we have a string of injuries to very specific players.

It is too bad some better defensemen did not hit waivers. That is actually a spot that made sense for a waiver claim. We have a handful of Marlies who are just as good, if not better, than all of the forwards and goalies who have hit waivers.

I'm for sure open to suggestions! Kinda want something I don't have to change in possibly a year :/
I was WizardofNaz, then Nylander88, then WayneTrain the last couple of years. Guess I shoulda stayed with Willy 🤣. I very much like toughness/heart though and Nylander just doesn't cross that off for me (my one dog is named Tucker, after my childhood fav, Darcy)

Hope the best for Simmonds. He doesn't have a roster spot at this point on a team actually trying to win but seems like he'd be a good guy to have in the room for a younger rebuilding group.

If he still wants to play I hope he gets the chance

I won't lie I didn't think there were so many leaf haters until I went to that Wayne Simmonds trade thread

Guys there started calling simmonds a cap dump at 1.8M who well have to attach a 1st to get rid of (when bas a 1.8M contract on a 1 year deal cost that much to dump?)

They got told he's at 900K not 1.8M

They proceed to say that he can't be fully buried still and his actual cash at 1.05M is a loss for owners which no one will take. They proceed to get corrected as owners (majority) don't give a shit about 1M in cash and his AAV being fully buryable is all that matters.

Then a few of them start talking about us needing to add a 4th or 5th to get rid of him to get a SPC since we're at 49/50 already

I was just like wtf???

Simmonds if he's dealt is a standard everyday routine NHL trade. Leafs deal him to whereever he wants to go for next to nothing and he gets a chance to play. We don't pay anything since he's not a negative asset. If no one wants him he clears waivers and is a Marlies and a potential callup for injuries

That thread had a lot of dumb takes

He seems like a great team guy but if I'm a different GM using a roster spot on him he needs to provide more than that and some toughness

I'd rather put a waiver claim in on a kid and roll the dice that way if I'm rebuilding because I doubt Simmonds will have any value at the TDL

Sad to see him go out this way but I can't blame anybody for not wanting him nowadays

Worst case just let him play on the Marlies. He can still play the way he does down there without worrying about costing the team, and there are a lot more guys willing to fight down there.

Plus he gets to stay home far more often. The Marlies play the vast majority of their schedule in places like Belleville, Rochester, and Laval (and Toronto of course). He wouldn't be away from home for more than a day or two for the vast majority of the year.

It is not the most glamourous thing in the world, but I don't think he really cares anymore TBH... And playing for the Marlies is probably better than playing for a lot of rebuilding teams right now. Makes the same money either way, and there is more of an incentive to give him some decent minutes down there.

If no one claims him and he wants to walk away hopefully we can find a job for him in the front office.
Simmonds played hard for us and seemed to be well liked in the room. He has also been a great ambassador and spokesperson for hockey an it’s underserved communities.

I think it is more likely he is a community representative.

It's bad enough going out into the main boards but it's just wonderful that a lot of those haters have now made their way into the Leafs forum.

Yep, that thread was completely ridiculous. Although I would probably attach a depth prospect like Gogolev and take nothing in return just for the SPC flexibility.

I don't mean to jump forward but I decided to peak into the future a bit. Cap situation next year is pretty solid just by removing Muzzin off the roster, after July 1st he's only owed $2M in real money.

I think by now we thought Amirov would be on the roster but likely going to be pushed back another 1-2 years because of the treatment if he's going to make it.

There's enough cap to find another RD - Mayfield? Zub? Dumba? In UFA

Samsonov, Kampf and ZAR were all retained in this scenario.

*lines in capfriendly aren't really lines, I just wanted to show who's on the roster

Cap situation looks fine with Muzzin on the team, too.

Especially if you don't double ZAR's salary for some reason.

Not as good and too much of a logjam at LD, Dubas drafted so well that he has too many viable options at LD.

ZAR wanted to cash in, didn't get it, took less to sign with us and as we've seen, playing in the spotlight here = big pay increases.

Lybushkin, Mikhayev, and Campbell etc all got more so ZAR...who is an absolute steal at his current rate going to 1.75M isn't that upsetting, especially if he's in that 2-3 year contract range, after that I hesitate as the play style could take it's toll.
