I feel the move is not to bring in a star on defence. A solid, well-rounded mid-pairing dman should suffice. I'd save the shinier assets for a move up front. I think a Luke Schenn type would help more than a Colin Blackwell type in that regard, so if you are going for a name, let that name be a forward.

Yeah I wouldn't look to get to drastic but I wouldn't mind some more scoring in the bottom 6

We defend very well but I do wonder if we had Holmberg and a good 2-way center beside him if we couldn't build a line you could put out against anyone that not only stops the other team scoring but could score as well and "win" those matchups

I think that would be useful in a long playoff series
I like these bottom 6 forwards

Ducks doing pretty decent for the "tank hard for Bedard cause" and are ready to do /open up for business, so,.... Leafs help them out even more by trading a few players and while the ducks also help us out into taking back an added contract and a higher cap hit for added draft picks.

Now we can sit at 49 contracts rather than the full out 50 and enhance our bottom 6 with a couple of young grinders and a promising big rd (Warren)that can show some phyical presence while becoming a solid two way D man for us in the future, and gaining a top 4 rd(Klingberg) to help us in a playoff drive.

If we have to tweak to get the deal done I also would think about adding another prospect but I believe it could be a good offer as is too.

What won't help for the playoffs, is an offensive D, who is terrible defensively. Hard pass.

Holmberg will be our permanent 3c and be very effective as soon as next season. That leaves us with 2 LW and D to potentially sort out. We'll we have Robertson, Knies, and potentially steeves to fill that hole. On D we have Reilly, Liljegren, Sandin long term with potentially Niemela, Villeneuve, and timmins as well. I think a shutdown RD for the long term to play with Reilly and replace brodie eventually will be necessary. I'd target Parayko.

Parayko isn't the player he once was.

If we're healthy (excluding Muzzin) I'm not sold that defense in on the shopping list, other than making sure that we're comfortable with our 7-8 to play meaningful minutes incase of injuries (Benn is a yes for sure)

Defense when healthy is fine, I wouldn't add anyone.
They do need another top winger, with a bit of size though.
That is a must, IMO.

He says D, another says a 3C, you say big winger.

Of course, we are adding Knies, a big winger... but we have no idea how he performs at the NHL level.

It's fun to talk about this stuff... but as I've suggested before, let's be patient and wait until further along the season, until we see what we really need.

Maybe our D sorts itself out. Maybe Holmberg claims 3C... maybe Robertson finds his groove. Maybe Knies comes in and is great. Or not... who knows.

This is the most measured and logical approach.

The big thing is that if Muzz is done any move can be a player with term. Wanted to look at what kind of options are viable so mapped out next year.
Samsonov 4m, Kampf 2.5, Holmberg 1.2, everyone else internal at .8

Knies-Matthews-Nylander

Steeves-Kampf-Malgin
Robertson-Holmberg-Anderson
Gaudette

Rielly-Brodie
Sandin-Liljegren
Gio-Timmins

Is a 22 man roster with 5.85 million in room to upgrade, and every player that gets bumped adds back 800k.

I generally agree with patience, with the exception of potentially acting opportunistically- we should be keeping a very close eye on the Florida situation getting Bennett or Reinhart cheap would be huge.

Edit- that's at an 83.5m cap. 50/50 that it's more like 86.5 if the escrow payback is done

Philadelphia is free falling. What about a guy like Farabee?

Fits the need for a top six winger, good skater, high IQ, plays solid in both ends of the ice.

Robertson + obviously.

Farabee - Matthews - Nylander
Bunting - Tavares - Marner
Kerfoot - Holmberg - Jarnkrok
Aston Reese - Kampf - Engvall

I wasn't implying a change was needed immediately. It'll be too late though if they wait to see if Knies is the answer.

If Muzzin is done, I could see Henrique for 3C. Not too many other great options unless you go for a rental, which is not ideal unless it can be a cheap upgrade of some kind.

Puljujarvi would be a really good buy low option.

I like Holmberg and he'll likely be a Kampf replacement next season, but the Leafs could use a big boost down the middle for the 3rd line. The problem is with the Blues and the Canucks starting to win a bit more lately, the options might be scarce. Toews could become a real option.

I don’t think options are that scarce. A trade isn’t going to happen tomorrow either.

We aren’t going to make a Horvat, ROR splash. So doesn’t really matter that VAN and STL are winning now.

Toews is tough to work in, even with 50% regained.

I think Nick Bjugstad from Arizona makes sense as a target. Two teams with a recent trade history, and Arizona signed him to trade him essentially. I wouldn’t even be shocked if Travis Boyd is a possibility, as he’s under team control for next year. He was good for the Leafs and has been good in a larger role for Arizona.

Jack Roslovic from CBJ would likely be attainable, perhaps even with some retention, but if we sent Engvall or Kerfoot the other way, the cap would work as is.

I think Scott Laughton is another feasible target. 3M is a solid price tag for a third line Center. He’s reliable and can chip in some offense.

The true bottom feeders are fairly barren, but there could be other opportunities. The Panthers crunch right now. I'd also keep an eye on the Flames if they remain behind the pack, Backlund/Lindholm/Toffoli would all be nice adds, and they've shown a willingness to shake things up.

Not sure why people want Klingberg. He’s terrible defensively. Not what we need at all and is strictly just a rental.

A month or so ago, I liked him a lot because he gives more skating and offence from the back end. Not just in terms of points, but in terms of transition and puck movement. Something the Leafs lack. Now though I think it's much less of a need for obvious reasons. It goes to show how much needs change over the course of a season.

Bjugstad and Laughton would be very average, and I'd be shocked if the Flyers traded Laughton. Boyd is even less of a needle mover. Not sure how better they are compared to Holmberg. Might as well just go hard after a winger if the best you can do is Bjugstad or Boyd.

Toews fits perfectly fine at 50%. It will require probably a shorter roster for the last quarter of the season but then the Leafs can bolster back up for the playoffs.

Yakov Trenin from Nashville.

NSH is a .500 team at the end of their win-now window and there's pressure to turn this around after having acquired McDonagh. Trenin is playing 4th line LW for them. He's struggled offensively this season but he has surprising skill for his size.

Trenin (1.7m x 2yr) reminds me of this year's Nick Paul (1.35m x 1yr) who I wanted pre-Tampa trade. He can play C/LW and comes super cheap. Checks a lot of boxes for what we lack.

NSH is being forced to play lefties in Josi and Lauzon at RD because they have zero depth there. Fabbro/Carrier are their only RD's and they're both young and not ideal matchup guys.

When healthy, I wonder if the Leafs look at a Holl + based deal for Trenin. Only possible if the Leafs believe Benn/Timmins can hold down a 6/7 rotation.

Lol. Arizona isn’t going to retain a penny on Crouse’s deal.

Trading Holl would be a mistake, he's not great but if he has the right partner he can give you decent top 4 play especially if we continue to get injuries

If you want cap space move a forward instead imo

That's a lot of moving parts.

As @TMLAM34 suggests, Arizona isn't going to retain, so that's a $4.3 mil contract we are going to be taking on. Crouse is the main piece here, and I wonder how much in assets we should be giving up, when we have multiple LW prospects about to join the team in the next year. Crouse isn't much of a passer, and seems to score a lot off the rush, but we could use his size, and physicality, and with Marner feeding him and Tavares, that could be a pretty juicy line.

Fisher has some size too, which would be nice.... Looking across his stats, something made me laugh... he's had 15 faceoffs this year... he's won.... ZERO.... I mean, we aren't getting him for faceoffs, but it's still kind of funny that you couldn't luck into one win.

I think you just let them keep Boyd and Brown though, and not make the deal so complicated. I also doubt that Arizona would move Crouse anyway, so they might hang up the phone on you right away, or try and hook you into overpaying for Chychrun while you are on the phone.

Parayko isn't the player he once was.
Or perhaps Parayko is the same player he was but was just being sheltered behind Pietrangelo during his time in St Louis. I haven't watched enough games to say but had plenty of disagreements with blues fans a few years ago about the impact of Parayko not having to be the number 1 guy on his team.

Trenin has never been a center in the NHL
Played centre in the Q and also played 2nd line C between Kuzmenko and Burdasov for SKA at times two years ago.

He’s been an NHL LW predominantly but has a history at C in other leagues. Two birds one stone for 1.7m.
