I remember Nino Niederreiter being available in the offseason and wanting us to move Kerfoot + to get him, he would've been the perfect winger for 2LW

Now we got Kerfoot at 3.5 with 1 goal while Nino already has 9 at 4 million
Yeah, given his style of play and what he even signed for… Seems like that should have been a no brainer.

The best part about this is Nino was a UFA. In theory it wouldn't have been Kerfoot+. It would have been Kerfoot for assets and Nino for free.

Kerfoot was coming off a pretty strong season as well, could have probably got a 2nd and a solid prospect in return.

My guess is if he couldve gotten that, he wouldve been traded. His value was probably nowhere near that so they decided they were better off keeping him

If we could swap out Kerfoot + for a quality top 6 LW, I think we would be in great shape. Many on this board wanted Nino in summer, would look good on the second line right now. Kerfoot just doesn't live up to his cap hit and can't consistently play top 6. I will keep harping that this is what we need most, way before we need more D.

Initially I was onboard with a forward, particularly a third line center, but with Muzzin's injury and goaltending which we hope is adequate, I'm leaning toward a defenseman. My issue is that there are a number of teams desperate for that position, which could drive up cost, and I'm not enamoured with paying significant assets for a rental like Klingberg or Gavrikov (both of whom I like) unless there are talks about an extension.

Marchment, Kubalik, Nino….. we could have easily upgraded our forward corp and made us harder to play against this off-season, but didn’t.

John Marino was given away for a song would immediately bolster our long term RHD as well.

This was a perplexing and underwhelming off-season for Dubas.

I concur. Lots of people said so at the time as well. Could have moved off of Kerfoot, Engvall, Holl, and not signed Jarnkrok. Would have open up quite a bit of cap space to bring in some difference makers.

Maybe. Although one, Marino wasn't given away for a song - would have been the equivalent of Sandin + 3rd, two, his cap would have been difficult to fit, and three, you never know what opportunities are there for a young GM like Kyle. Could be other GMs don't even both to call him.

I think some of his moved panned out very well - particularly Benn (so far), Jarnkrok has been just ok, Malgin's been worth a roster spot so far, and both Samsonov and Murray have faired better than expected, which is good. Some tough decisions need to be made now with respect to what's next. We could see Kerfoot going the other way in a trade for a D, or even Robertson.

We need a Dman desperately. I do not want to see Holl playing 24 minutes a night..

Turn the TV off then. We don't need a Dman desperately. We need the best team we can ice for the playoffs. This isn't the playoffs. The sky isn't falling, This is a few games in the regular season, one where we are going to qualify for the playoffs anyway. This is a chance for players to grow, take on more responsibility, and be better players. This is a chance for our forwards to help out more, learn to be a better team overall defensively.

Is it possible we need to upgrade some positions? Sure, maybe even on D, but we aren't desperate, that much is for sure.

Focus on the long term goal... winning in the playoffs, not the games in November.

Yes let's start giving away games and maybe making the wild card spot. We need a dman either way for the playoffs, this group is not good enough

So at the same time, everyone thinks they can rob Dubas blind but they also don't bother to call him because they want to make worse deals elsewhere?

My gut tells me, the wisest add would be a D for the playoffs... but the D we need for the playoffs, that Muzzin replacement, Defensive guy, physical, doesn't solve the current problem of Rielly being out anyway.

Even saying, that I'm leaning to adding a D, I still think we need to establish that it is our biggest need, and not a #2LW, or #3C. Despite injuries to goalies, and D, we are still doing ok... second in the division. Seriously, the sky isn't falling man.

I agree with the sentiment, but there is a top 4 need anyway so this might help push conversations along for a Muzzin replacement. That being said a knee jerk overpay isn’t what should be done either.

Chance to give Kral a look in the line up IMO and see what Liljigren and Sandin can do in expanded roles with PP time.

Also this might be the period of time for Gio to step up as a #1D. Despite his age he should be capable of carrying the load for a bit of time.

As I've said, just before you posted, that top 4 need, doesn't solve the Rielly is out issue anyway... so if that's our biggest need, it's no more important necessarily that before. A Murphy, Gavrikov, Roy, Peeke, Zub, Orlov, Schenn... whatever your flavour is... none of these guys do what Mo does anyway.... So, we are in the same situation today, as we were the day before.

I still think we need time to decide, if that's our biggest need, or 2LW, or 3C, or....

So Friedge is saying that the Leafs are looking to trade for Frank Vatrano. Not sure how I feel about that. Vatrano seems like the kind of player who can be extremely dangerous when put in the right situations (like in NY) but flounders at other times (Anaheim, Florida). When need more scoring so maybe he’d help? Not sure another inconsistent player is what the dr ordered though. He makes about the same as Kerfoot so the ducks would have to retain. Wonder what cost would be.

Not more of these type of players...
Can we please just go out and either get a real top 6 guy or at least a bigger physical guy with decent hands.

Beating a dead horse but one can easily see how Engvall (2.25M), Holl (2M) and Kerfoot (3.5)'s money could have been better spent to make the team better. Dubas didn't tinker enough in the off-season.

His goaltending, when healthy looks to be exceeding expectations.

I think everyone is reasonably happy with ZAR and Jarnkrok additions. Say what you want about Jarnkrok but he's basically what he's been consistently in Nashville, his skill set made Kerfoot redundant and I don't know why they didn't cash out after that strong season. Sell high for once.

Other than the big 4 and maybe Kampf, the rest are MEH. Bunting and Kerfoot are huge disappointments so far. I do not see any having a Nick Paul moment in the playoffs.
