Trades and Free Agency - 2022-23 Season Edition

Friedman dropped a couple names he heard we were interested in on his most recent podcast. Frank Vatrano and (prepare your SSM jokes) Connor Timmins.
Timmins looks like a dud. I wouldn't waste time on him. Injury prone.

Vatrano initially interested me because of his style of play and what I expected to be his cap hit. But, that is pretty steep. I'm not sure I want 3 years at 3.65M per for Frank Vatrano. He does seem fairly consistent offensively the last 5 or so years. Generally pacing for 35-40 points over a full season. Seems physical, but not overly physical. He does pace for a high total in goals each year 20+ per year. So, the thinking may be he can be an answer to two issues bottom-6 goal scoring and physicality in one shot.

I'd take Vatrano over any of Kerfoot, Jarnkrok, or Engvall.

But i'd only be interested if one of those names were out the door. Don't love a combined supporting cast of those 4 + Malgin/Robertson.

He's essentially Robertson, fast-forwarded a couple of years. Don't know why we refuse to develop our own version for 1/3 the price.

My hope for a Vatrano trade would be to swap newly signed RWers and give them Jarnkrok for him. Neither player has really impressed so far in their new environment. Jarnkrok is 31 and signed for 4 seasons. While, Vatrano is 28 and signed for 3 seasons. In Vatrano you get goals and hits, but lose a bit defensively. You add 1.55M in cap space from the space gained from Muzzin being on LTIR, but you shed a year of term and gain a player in his prime years who brings more of what you need. I don't think you need both those contracts on the 3rd line.

Watched pita/chi last night

Murphy is fine.. if we want another positional moderate checker

I dont see a lot of impact - is it worth his cap hit to moderately stabilize the defence? And then who does he play with

Not really, especially considering his concussion history and age. Definitely not my first choice and he's not what a lot of people think he is.

Murphy's a less mobile Roy/Gavrikov. None are overly punishing like a Mayfield, so i'd prefer the options with more mobility (Gavrikov//Roy).

100%

Never been on the murphy kick.. same injury history to replace muzzin?.. doh!

Skating, playing defence and getting the f***en puck out is the criteria..

I'll say again. I think Mayfield is ideal, especially if you cam get him with extension.

He can play with any of our LD and make a good pairing. Provides a lot of what we lack in defense

Wanna change our bottom 6? 2 names that are apparently available in McMichael and Vatrano would do that, adding both changes the look

First off.... why does our bottom six need changing? Our 4th line has been pretty good so far. I can see wanting upgrades on the third line though.

Second, as far as our 3rd line is concerned, we should probably give guys like Anderson and Steeves a shot, to see if they can improve upon our results there, at least from a winger perspective...

The main need on the bottom six, would be a #3C, and while there are some interesting names being thrown out, none of them are current candidates for 3C..

Why would Columbus have any interest in Kerfoot and Holl? Both are pending UFAs and almost certainly leave Columbus the moment they can.

Helps temporarily fill the gaps left by Jenner and Peeke, can be flipped at the deadline

Not advocating for the trade per se, but not all players in a deal are placed there because the other team values them. Any team acquiring anything from Columbus will want (and most likely need) to move salary in the deal. At least in this case the deals would have no extended term. They obviously would not be making up the value proposition component in the deal.

I more so meant, why would they have any interest in Kerfoot and Holl when specifically being traded in a deal for their captain Jenner.

If you want Jenner and Peeke, the deal probably starts with a 1st, Sandin and Robertson. Then throw whoever in for cap purposes.

I do wonder with the quality of our other 3 centers if we could go out and get a young cheap reclamation project and develop him now and into the future as our 3C with an eye to the future (if he hits maybe you get a top 6C in the future)

You could shelter him pretty comfortably as we develop him to

Maybe somebody like McMichael?

This should be the focus.. we have plenty of wingers to mix and match pro and farm

Are we confident that Muzzins cap hit is no longer a factor? Will he be back next year? Because if we are not sure that he wont be back next year we cannot really make big moves other than rentals.

I guess the first question would be, is he even available? He's only 21, a bit soon for Washington to be giving up on him.
