roy and mayfield are pretty much off the table considering there teams position.

the obvious move today is something based on kerfoot for demelo ..

NYI are slipping a bit already, by the TDL they may not be in a playoff position.

Winnipeg on the other hand looks comfortably in a playoff spot in a weak division

Look at the LAK. They have 5 everyday RD with 2 more in the AHL. Roy is playing 18 minutes a night. They also have no cap space. They could benefit from a Sandin/Roy swap.
I’ve been saying Matt Roy for a while now.

LAK have an embarrassment of RHD. They make a logical partner and we’ve had a good track record of trading with them.

Roy would be cheaper to trade for too and would be a very good long term fit.

With Liljegren, Brodie, Roy and Niemala and Villeneuve in the pipeline, Dubas would have done well to build our RHD pipeline. Also makes Holl highly expendable.

Win-win-win all around.

Roy seems like the kind of guy that has some fanfare because he plays in a market most people in the East coast don't actually watch and once he got here, people would think he's garbage and it would be another referendum on the GM.

I much prefer Mayfield and believe Mayfield fits the mold of exactly what this team needs. Mayfield (I imagine) will also cost quite a bit more.

Not sure I would play Horvat at #3C and how close he gets us to a Cup but I'd be all over him. If he does not help us out of round #1, one of the big 4 would have to go to be able to resign Horvat.

Yeah a Horvat or Kane level rental is good insurance. If it works out and we go on a run, the price is worth it even if they walk in the summer. If we lose early again, there's no way you keep the core and having a replacement in your back pocket will be good for leverage. Only tricky part is Dubas is also gone in that scenario and the new guy might not like Horvat.

He’s definitely better than Holl. So instantly would improve our blueline even if fan expectations aren’t met which I do agree, I do think people around here overrate Roy. He’s solid.

The defenceman I would be going hard after would be Provorov especially with Philly continuing to suck. Said it before but a pairing Provorov - Liljegren would be really good.

No argument there. You won't find a Holl fan in me. I'm not against the acquisition of someone like Roy but I don't like the acquisition costs that have been thrown around here.

If Mayfield still had term on his contract, he would be the perfect acquisition. I don't see the Islanders being completely out of it by the TDL and therefore probably won't sell off their guys.

Pay whatever it takes through 1st rounder and prospects to get Horvat as the 3C and a cup looks close to a guarantee. I'm not impressed with these guys as must keep prospects but I'm impressed, in fact impressed is an understatement with a team that has our core + Horvat as the 3C.

This league is so watered down right now with this flat cap the time to strike is now

*I include Samsonov when I use the word core now
I dont see 1, 2 or even 3 players moving the needle on this unpredictable, unreliable, butter soft team. Why waste assets in a great upcoming draft year? This team is going no where as constructed and needs many changes starting from the top down. Dubas can no longer be trusted & Keefe will not take this team to the Holy grail....I suggest we play all the kids we can and see what we have....there may be a diamond or two in the rough
. Just my 2 cents...

I could see 1 player move the needle ... Crosby/McDavid/MacKinnon/...
I could see 2 players move the needle ... Pastrnak and Dumba/...
I could see 3 players move the needle ... Kane and Crouse and Chychrun/...

It really depends on who those players are.

And, how could we ever add those 3 impact players? The only 3 we would be able to add would equate to kerfoot/ holl & possibly Sandin's salary...I was referring, obviously, to playets we could genuinely afford....not wish for in a non cap market...

Why waste assets on a rental? Also - why do you believe Mayfield is better than Roy? Do you have anything to back that up?

"I dont see 1, 2 or even 3 players moving the needle on this unpredictable, unreliable, butter soft team."

I was being extreme, like you were.

If they move out Holl, Kerfoot and Engvall, it opens up, 7.7mm, add that to Muzzin's 5.6, you have 13.3mm to work with.

Now, be willing to use prospects and picks and go shopping.

I'd bet you could bring in 3 players with an average of 4.4 salary and make a difference.

Of course, I'm not sure Matthews and marner will ever elevate their games in the playoffs.
Does that make one of Matthews and/or marner available for trade?

Well.....if they were prepared to move MM you have s valid point. I like your thinking process!

If Toronto is going for a UFA rental route, the top tier players should be the only ones they target, legitimate good players. No point in spending assets on 6th d-mans and 4th line players.

Targets on Forward: Kane,Horvat,Tarasenko,ROR,Larkin,Bertuzzi,Strome
Targets on Defence: Klingberg,Orlov,Chycurun,Dumba

Obviously some of these are team dependent on how they are doing @ the deadline, but those are players that move the needle for us.

I think if the Leafs are in firm playoff spot at the deadline, people should be ready to expect a 1st or a top prospect to be moved, this is likely Dubas last kick at the can if they don't advance past the 1st round, it becomes someone else problem to deal with later.

Any interest in moving Kerfoot’s 3.5 mil cap hit and replacing him with a bigger player that can actually finish?

The best defensive winger in the league last year was on the market and got scooped up for 4.5M, only 1M more than Kerfoot. He also happens to be able to score (27g pace over the last 2 years) and he’s 6’4. Dubas insisted this summer that Kerfoot was a positive asset yet didn’t move off him when Marchment was available for free.

There are certain players that don't become available once they make the NHL and I think that might be Kaedan Korczak...it helps that Vegas contending now and have Pietrangelo, Whitecloud and both Martinez/Theodore capable of playing RD...

What does Vegas need? Korczak would be a welcome addition to our team as soon as next season or half way through this year.

What happened to Quinton Byfield? Still hasn't been able to crack LA.

6'5 centre. Newmarket boy. Wonder if he'll be available as a reclamation project over the next 1-2 years.

A cautionary tale that not every top prospect will make it as planned.

He probably goes through a Dylan Strome like development where he ends up as a decent player but we'll below an star tier of guys

I see a reclamation project in his future. Same with Barrett Hayton. Thought Gabe Vilardi would go down that route too but he's having an unexpected breakout.
