It won't be popular and definitely beating a dead horse, but how much better off would we be if Dubas had just kept it simple at the Expansion draft, kept McCann, and exposed/lost one of Kerfoot or Holl?

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
McCann-Tavares-Marner.

We have a better top 6 with one less hole to plug, and removes a player from our roster, most likely Kerfoot, who really isn't a great loss. Meanwhile, we'd have the better player who can play LW or C if needed.

There, I said it, and I will leave it at that......
Yeah, even the simplest of moves he tends to get wrong.

Not overly enthusiastic to hear the Leafs are interested in Tyler Myers.
Linked to Dumba as well which is more exciting. Not perfect but realistic and could be had for 3M this season.

Brodie-Dumba
Reilly-Lilly
Gio-Benn
Holl

Then work on getting a Bogo type if Benn doesn't stick.

This team badly needs a 3C. Bigger than the needs for a top 6 winger and a Muzzin replacement at the moment. Keefe has tried just about every 3C option available and nothing has worked.
I agree, a plus level 3C provides stability down the middle, that and a willingness to experiment with the wing matches + development and opportunities to youth really has the ability to shrink our shopping list up front.

A bundle deal for Eller+Orlov would be expensive (and both could be re-signed as easily as not), but makes for a rock solid roster.

They need both, Toronto is having trouble scoring goals 5 on 5, getting a 3C means Robertson can come back into the lineup, but I don’t think he drastically makes the leafs start to score at 5 on 5.

Like we saw against NJD, our D struggled mightily with pressure after pressure on them. They have too many holes IMO to be going all in this year, unless they are trading for someone with years left on their contract.

We'd probably be worse off. If we were protecting McCann, that means we went 7-3. We'd lose Holl (our only RHD, and half of our great shutdown pairing the year before), and we would have needed to sign a defenseman to replace him during the summer when every defenseman was getting massively overpaid. We'd have to trade an equivalent forward in Kerfoot for undervalue, and likely lose an additional piece last year to cover the price discrepancy between Holl and our new D signing.

And then this year, we'd have to lose more from our roster to cover the extra 1.5m we're paying for McCann relative to Kerfoot. And of course, McCann wouldn't get the top PP time he gets in Seattle, so he wouldn't be producing as much.

I think those are both chemistry/slump/coaching issues rather than pure personnel. A 3C + top4 D (either side- flexibility allowed by Brodie) gets dmen into the right slots and allows some flexibility to play up front. Whether we would use that flexibility is another story.

This team is by no means perfect, but it's solidly in a playoff spot despite losing a top 4 dman game 1, having to start the 4th string goalie half the year, the F group playing well below their individual and collective abilities, and an absolute ass record in OT

Disagree.

Losing Holl is no big loss, and it might have motivated Dubas to actually get a better RHD that fit our needs.

Maybe he's more proactive in making that rumored deal to get Weegar, adding whatever was needed, or getting John Marino for the song that NJ paid to get him.

Holl isn't good enough to be used as he has been, and losing him in the Expansion draft should have been what motivated Dubas to actually address our RHD. With the love affair our management has with Holl, they've had no motivation to actually solidify our RHD other than Brodie, who has been an excellent signing. Credit note to Dubas on drafting RHD, with Niemala and Villeneuve, who are exciting prospects in the pipeline.

.......... so yes, I consider Dubas failing twice on the Expansion Draft, and directly responsible for our 2 organizational needs: a top LW and/or 3C, and a legit Top 4 RHD. Not even considering that he gave up Hallander and a 7th to trade for McCann (dirt cheap deal to get McCann), who at minimum could have been used as trade fodder in other moves to address holes in our lineup....

Don't agree, that's fair, but that's my take.

You know who seems to have a hall pass around here? Jarnkrok. Guys been literally unnoticeable.
With the 2M+ they gave him for 4 years they probably could have at least addressed a need and acquired someone who would at least be hard to play against when he wasn't scoring. Unfortunately more of the same player type in Jarnkok from our saviour Dubass.

You’re right about the team; it’s not perfect but it’s no means a bad team, they just need to get better players if they want to take a next step. I just think personally, trying to fill 3 holes in your lineup at the deadline is mighty hard to do. Toronto scoring goes dry in the playoffs, keeping a lacklustre player like Kerfoot in your top 6 isn’t ideal.

A Muzzin replacement is also a must at this point, I like Benn so far, but I don’t think he’s going to be able to lockdown other teams top 6 players come playoff time.

You can plug Kampf into the 3rd line C, but it seems like Keefe/Dubas want our 3rd line to be strong two way line, and not have a defensive mind like Kampf on it.

Seems like he falls into the boring void that is our 3rd line. Kerfoot is not getting that much criticism either, considering he has only 1G in 18GP.

... then again, Engvall is also in that void and has been getting criticized.

Holl was half of our top shutdown pairing that did really well in 2020-2021. Whether or not you personally think he'd be a big loss now, he certainly would have been considered a significant loss that needed replacing then. And replacing him then would have been costly. Every defenseman was getting overpaid that summer, and that has ramifications for the rest of the roster and moving forward.

All to keep a forward who's really no better than Kerfoot instead of Kerfoot, who would soon be more expensive than Kerfoot.

In the end, the expansion draft resulted in us losing a depth prospect and a 7th round pick. That's a win.

Engvall, Kerfoot, Jarnkrok and Malgin… It’s way too much of the same type of player. This entire bottom six needs ANOTHER overhaul. I believe Aston Reese - Kampf - Anderson would be a good fourth line and all players we currently have in the organization. Our third line needs to be completely redone.

I would not group Malgin in there, as he seems to be able to play more of an energy game that the other three are seemingly incapable of.

But I agree the sameness of the other three is problematic. One of them is fine. They don't hurt you defensively, they put up some points occasionally, but three of them? They are making a combined $7.85M between them. In hindsight, it would have been better to allocate $2M to one of them, $5M to a top-six LW or 3C, and then an ELC for the last spot.

While you don't want to limit yourself by making certain assets off limits, there are 4 assets I'd be very hesitant to move. Absolutely not for a rental and the player with term better be an absolute difference maker.

Knies - I think this one self-explanatory. Top LW with some size. Sorely needed

Niemela - My guess is others may have softened on him and maybe feel he could be more expendable with the rise of Lily. But RHD or not, imo he is the only prospect in the system with more than bottom pair upside. Every other D prospect has low upside or major question marks. That makes him extra valuable to us, but maybe you could deal him for a great dman with term....

Minten - Call it shiny new toy syndrome, but he's looked great, exactly the two-way 3C or 2bC we've needed for years.

2023 1st - We've only picked in the 1st round once since 2018. Can't keep not picking in the 1st. This year is very deep and you never know what could happen in a round with trades/fallers etc... I'd be more inclined to trade it in a weaker year.

Otherwise, have at it, but I not sure who else would really move the needle unfortunately. Too many variables are making this year more of an evaluate and hope for the best than a year where you can just go for it.

Engvall has been significantly bad though, Kerfoot and Jankrok are vanilla players, but they aren’t causing turnovers left and right every single game like Engvall is.

Once a game you can count on Engvall trying to back hand it to the middle of the ice and getting picked off and the other team going the other way.

I'm not going to care about the 1 season that Holl was serviceable and ignore the fact that for the past 2 years and going forward he isn't what we need him to be at $2.5 million.

Not going to go into who's better: Kerfoot or McCann. McCann is the better player and he plays C and LW better than Kerfoot.

His cap hit is 2m, not 2.5m, he's provided that value and more, and what he's done since the expansion draft is really irrelevant to the decision that had to be made at the time of the expansion draft anyway. Holl had just played a significant role for our team and would have needed to be replaced if he left, which would have been costly that summer.

I like how you said that you're not going to get into who's better, and then immediately got into who's better. They're similar quality players that play similar roles at a similar level.

Speaking of 3C's, what about Michael McLeod? Jersey seems to have an abundance of natural C's. I know McLeod has been more of a 4C in Jersey, but he's only 24 and may be a good gamble for showing more offense in the future (saw bits of it yesterday). He's great in the other aspects of his game too...face-offs, compete, defense, toughness. He's probably in Jersey's long-term plans, but you never know.

He is suspected to be one of the players involved in the 2018 World Jr scandal. Might find himself ostracized from the league at any moment. I agree that he’s exactly the sort of player we could use though.
