This to me suggests a pretty strong willingness to re-sign here. Apparently his wife is from Toronto.

It would be great if ROR went the Giordano path assuming he fits in well here. Not expecting him to play for near the minimum like Gio, but at this stage of his career he might be open to a team friendly deal if he's comfortable here.

JvR isn’t very good 5v5 defensively, though he can still put up points. He can’t be sheltered on the 4th line, as that line has a role with us. We also don’t need a PP specialist. I just don’t see a spot for him.

The moves we’ve made have been to improve the team, but both RoR and Acciari are guys who are good defensively. Short of a Kane, I don’t see us bringing in someone who isn’t also good defensively. I don’t think we have Meier assets left anyway, but at least he’s ok defensively. Same with a Comtois, Crouse, Ekholm, and Chychrun is at least ok. ( I’m not sure we have Chychrun assets left either)
How is vatrano defensively. He'd be a cheaper option them JVR

We can do some fun things with ROR contract since he's below 35. Ie give him a long-term front loaded contract where he gets the bulk of his money in the first 3-4 years and then retires. There are some limitations about how much you can front-load, but enough room to play around.

For me the big question is which acquisitions are actually rentals, and which ones are earmarked for re-signing?

Leafs just acquired the top two PK forwards from the Blues. They aren't replacing Kampf or marner, but could be replacing Kerfoot and Aston-Reese.

Does this make Kerfoot even more disposable?

I like how he's gone from expendable to disposable 🤣🤣

They could, but then they would still need 50% retention on McCabe or there would be zero hope of retaining ROR beyond this season.

I don't think Chicago would be offering that type of retention on Mccabe since he still has 2.5 years under contract. They may not care about the cap component, but with 50% retention they'd be on the hook for about $5mil in real dollars. That'll make the price on Mccabe shoot way up.

Absolutely. But if the Leafs dangled Sandin, I wonder if that would work? The D seems to just be missing that one shutdown type LD.

And I am fully willing to consider different options other than McCabe. But it would definitely need to be someone with control and some retention to consider moving Sandin.

I saw someone on twitter mention Hoglander as a solution for the Leafs bottom-6 scoring issues, and count me in. Inexplicably has fallen out of favour with the new management in Vancouver but he's proven he can score, drive play, and isn't a liability defensively. Still on his ELC too and I doubt he costs much of anything with how they've treated him.

Fans around here would groan at acquiring Hoglander because of his size but I would be ecstatic. He's really good and I'm puzzled why the Canucks don't value him much more.

It feels more like an off-season addition though.

I don’t pretend to understand why teams and good players have falling outs. I suspect that bad periods of losing can bring out the worst in both sides. I also have no idea why Chicago, a team needing endeavouring to rebuild, would figure that they’d need to trade the likes of Dach and DeBrincat…. Who knows.

Robertson for Hoglander?

I'm ready for a Kerfoot for Puljijarvi trade now! He adds size, and is a better forechecker. We save another 500k as well, making more room for additional moves.

Puljijarvi - O'Reilly - Engval is one heck of a good defensive line thay forechecks like a mo fo.

Edit: If it's true Edmonton may be looking to bury him, maybe you can get Pulji retained through a third party paid by Edmonton. Cost a 4th to retain 1.875m for O'Reilly.

So Edmonton gets Kerfoot @2.75m

Leafs get Puljijarvi @2m

Third team retains a total of 1.75m on Puljijarvi for a 3rd from Edmonton.

Edmonton saves 250k against the cap, Leafs save 1.5m, and the third tem gets a 3rd tk double retain.

Oilers desperately need cap space. They are on the brink of waiving Puljujarvi. This doesn't work at all for them.

I made an edit.
Get a third team to retain same total cap as OReilly for a 3rd, spread over two players.

Maybe Kerfoot at 2.5m, and Puljijarvi at 2.25?
Leafs and Oilers both move save cap.

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Kerfoot - Tavares - Marner
Engvall - ROR - Jarnkrok
Holmberg/Knies - Kampf - Acciari
ex. Holmberg/Knies - ZAR - Hunt
Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Giordano - Holl
Sandin - Liljegren
ex. Benn - Timmins
Mete

Samsonov
Murray
ex. Woll

I think that is the team that we go with. They still have time to get creative or to tinker or for a new issue to emerge that needs fixing, but it's a full group on paper and they really blew their load in one shot with the ROR/Acciari trade. The Leafs now have moved all their 2nd's in the next 3 drafts, their 1st this season, they are out a 2024 3rd and 2023 and 2025 4th rd. picks. Their lone pick in the first 4 rounds this season can't be moved because it's still tied to Arizona. They have low ammo for more additions and they do have a pretty full group. Not too mention there have been a couple light drafts lately. If they do make another move and choose to move picks my guess would be from the 2024 draft in rounds 4-7. They have 5 in 4 rounds to close that draft.

They have a strong group of 13 up front with Holmberg and Knies and they have a strong 7 with Timmins on the point. Any of those names should give us a good chance to win. The other names listed are replacement level veterans with a lot of experience, Simmonds will likely not play but soak up the experience as an extra, same with Mete.

I think there will still be some minor league trades. The Marlies have had some injuries on defense and just moved a couple of forwards. If there was a way they could add without losing their last contract spot reserved for Knies they will likely explore it.

By not making another move Benn isn't risked on waivers. Holmberg can go to the minors when Knies signs to give him a chance to gel until playoffs without affecting the cap, again protecting Benn from being exposed.

Is Chychrun Chris Pronger now? No thank you if that is the price.
I just don’t value those pieces as much as you I guess. The Leafs just gave up a 1st and a Minten equivalent (2nd) for 2 rental forwards who have less points than Chychrun. Chychrun is signed for 2 years after this under 5M. Sandin is a good player but worse than Chychrun.
