Trades and Free Agency - 2022/2023 Trade Deadline Edition

The team really doesn't need more. We're entering luxury here if Dubas can add another good/great player upfront.

I think it's fair to say with ROR and Acciari here that Kerfoot is officially redundant. Now is the time to move on from his 3.5 for a more offensive minded player. If not Kerfoot, then Engvall, they've become too rich and we could use a different profile up front.

Again, I don't know who that player would be.

Is Max Domi a viable option at the deadline? Dude has played well in Chicago. Him being in Toronto might take his play to the next level with his dad's history and all and now that we have RoR that adds to it all.

I can probably agree here that in a perfect world, the Leafs should flip Kerfoot for a better offensive player.

It's not that easy though and Kerfoot fills a decently valuable role. Engvall might have very good underlying stats but he always seems to be in the doghouse and his urgency/compete is always a problem. Kerfoot isn't perfect but I don't think he has problems playing with urgency and intensity.

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
ROR-Tavares-Marner
Knies-Acciari-Jarnkrok
Kerfoot-Kampf-Engvall

Seems pretty solid. Kinda a bit of a waste using ROR on the wing considering his faceoff and defensive ability but he will probably be better off offensively on the wing. Moving JT to the wing instead seems not really necessary, I think ROR and him are similar in playstyle defensively and are both pretty slow up the middle.
In years past, that 4th line would have been our 2nd.

Homerun swing is Ekholm or Chychrun. I think the forwards are good. Not sure who goes. Not even sure how it gets done. Thinking Sandin, 1st, ++ with salary going out. Kerfoot or Holl. Can't see them not going all in now after spending on O'Reilly as a rental. Whatever bumps Holl to the third pairing or even out of the lineup makes this team a true contender.

Still think Dubas has a lot of capital in the tank should he choose to use it. Still have Robertson/Minten/Knies/Niemela and our 24/25 1sts. Plus a lot of near-NHL ready guys like Steeves/SDA/Kral/Etc..

There is another big swing coming imo

I'm actually thinking something like Sandin, Knies and a 1st for Chychrun is what happens. I think it's a massive overpayment for the long term but it makes us so much better right now.

I would... not like that but I would understand it. I don't think the Leafs need to go that hard after a defenseman, there are plenty of quality options without the need to buy from the top shelf.

I'm just guessing at the price. I have no clue. But Chychrun for 3 playoffs would be huge. Ekholm same thing. I think he has the same or maybe even 1 extra year. More money but probably a little cheaper to get. I'd hate to lose Knies but if it makes us legit contenders 3 years in a row then I'm fine with it.

For me the big question is which acquisitions are actually rentals, and which ones are earmarked for re-signing?

Leafs just acquired the top two PK forwards from the Blues. They aren't replacing Kampf or marner, but could be replacing Kerfoot and Aston-Reese.

Does this make Kerfoot even more disposable?

I would say one of Kerfoot or Engvall are looking behind them, more so the latter.

Let's not forget that depth is important though. Kerfoot was a huge player when Tavares got injured 2 playoffs ago and was probably one of our better forwards against Tampa Bay last playoffs. I don't think Dubas forgot about that.

I’m right there with you. Just posted the nearly same exact thing in another thread.

Big hockey trade coming. Prospects for a huge line up upgrade piece.

So Leafs have almost ~10M left to play with. Murray's 4.6M (LTIR) and possibly 3.5M (Kerfoot), 2.2M (Engvall) and 2M (Holl). Any of these 3 players (or a combo of them) could be moved for another piece or two.

Dubas still has the possibility to get a good 2LW and also get a good D to upgrade on Holl.

Going to be an exciting two weeks. Can't wait.

Without a lot of draft assets left to make any splash for a 2nd line winger or top 4 D man, do we concentrate on a depth add for defense now? Still lack that heavy PK d man. If Muzzin ever returned to form we’d be laughing, but not looking like that’s happening.

Might have to wait for a last minute sell off on deadline day deal, where some team is going be stuck because they asked too much for a Schenn or Myers. Nick Jensen would be my target if the Caps fall out of playoff contention. I don’t know what their plans are for him but he has been good defensively the last few years and has put up 20 points this season as well.

Nick Jensen (article about his last season)
The Leafs if anything need a LD more than a RD. Preferably one who is in the shutdown mold. I'd move Sandin for someone like a 50% retained McCabe however.

Murray isn't staying on LTIR for the season. He'll be back at some point. He was practicing yesterday and Keefe alluded that while still not 100% he's not far. I'd be shocked if he misses the rest of the season.

I think Bertuzzi and Soucy/McCabe would really round out this team and put them over the top.

Knies still hasn’t signed his ELC. We have one contract spot left. So any further trades will require a contract leaving. I have my wish list.

I would go get JT Miller and call it a deadline.

Miller 50%

Sandin
Knies
Robertson
Kerfoot (salary)

Miller Matthews Marner
Jankrok JT Willy
Bunting ROR Engvall
ZAR Kampf Acciari.

Funny thing is, Miller isn't on his next contract yet.

So the Canucks could retain 50% of his current contract, but not his next contract.

How many teams want to pay him 7*$8mm?

Buffalo?

Exactly. It would be a 2 mill in the door.
We decide what to do with him in the summer. Keep, or flip him again to recoup picks.

I think it makes a lot of sense actually.

He’s a dick, sure. Honestly, though - I like that a bit. Many championship teams have a total douche nozzle on their team.

Big body. Physical.

He’s a shooter, which this team needs. We try to pass the puck into the net. Great on the PP. You play him with 34 and 16. They cover his defensive deficiencies. Marner gets a legit 2nd option to feed.

You then have 2 legit PP units. Keefe can play the hot hand.

If they do get a RD they can just play Brodie LD where he has arguably been better over the last 2 seasons.
