How do the Oilers make the Karlsson move work?

We're talking $39mm in real money for the rest of his contract.

They expect San Jose to pay $19.5mm for what in return?

I can't see the Sharks retaining as much as Oilers fans hope for. Edmonton lands Karlsson, and they can expect some depth pieces out the door too.

I want this to happen just to see Karlsson and Nurse together.

JVR@75 to serve as a top 6 scoring winger option?

I'd do kokkonen or hironen + 3rd + 4th to team retaining the extra 25

Let's you run

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander

JVR - JT - Marner

Kerfoot - RoR - Jarnkrok

Acciari - Holmberg - Engvall

The Leafs should have ~1.5M in space once Murray returns, assuming they demote Benn. Obviously this space increases if they send someone out.

Sounds about right. I'm not saying they don't have room to make a trade and move salary needed, but the LTIR space right now is deceiving because of Murray.

Murray is made of glass clearly so who knows though. But for now, seems like he's on pace to be back soonish.

For all the talk of the Leafs making a big move and ROR on the block, this trade quietly came to fruition without a ton of buzz

A few days ago Dubas said they weren't interested in trading top picks/prospects for rentals. It was definitely a bit of a curve ball. It fits exactly what they needed though so it's not that surprising. Seravalli seemed a little upset that Dubas lied.

I wonder what ROR commands on open market next off season. I would like to see him back as the 3C. Something like this would be good.

leafs - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps
I'd try to squeeze Bunting for more and keep Kampf.

I’m back on the go all in for Chychrun bandwagon. It appears the future is out the window with this trade.

24 1st, Sandin, Minten, Kerfoot for Chychrun
How is the future out the window? Leafs have a ton of prospects coming in over the next few years.

JVR would have to be a 4th line option as PP specialist. Would be terrible 5on5

It’s altogether possible extensions have been talked about, and this isn’t rental. Or it could be a rental. Too soon to tell.

JvR isn’t very good 5v5 defensively, though he can still put up points. He can’t be sheltered on the 4th line, as that line has a role with us. We also don’t need a PP specialist. I just don’t see a spot for him.

The moves we’ve made have been to improve the team, but both RoR and Acciari are guys who are good defensively. Short of a Kane, I don’t see us bringing in someone who isn’t also good defensively. I don’t think we have Meier assets left anyway, but at least he’s ok defensively. Same with a Comtois, Crouse, Ekholm, and Chychrun is at least ok. ( I’m not sure we have Chychrun assets left either)

I guess I'll put it here rather than derail the ROR trade thread, but in regards to the Foligno trade, part of me is convinced (without any proof) that the 2 week quarantine and all the procedure around it prevented a timely and complete physical/evaluation of Foligno. He was damaged goods and turned out to be a total bust. Even if this wasn't a factor, tough to imagine having so much bad luck and getting screwed like that again. Then again, it's the Leafs

Leafs potentially wouldn't even need him at 50% if they moved out something small in terms of salary

A B prospect likely has the same value as a 2nd

Foligno was healthy when he came to the Leafs. He was PPG through his first 4 games with us, and then suffered an injury on May 3rd, that was entirely new, and according to Foligno's own words, was debilitating and forced him to completely change how he played.

It's the next 2 seasons that the retention would really be needed.....and the only reason for all the cap space now is because Murray is on LTIR until Feb 28.

$4.7 million is all gone once Murray returns.

Before this move - as much as he frustrates people Kerfoot wasn't really expendable. They were an injury to Matthews/Tavares away from David Kampf in the top six if they moved off of Kerfoot without another center coming back.

Now that they have ROR that risk is mitigated well. Its a tricky move because it would take a couple moves (either dealing Kerfoot separately or the team acquiring Kerfoot flipping him), but I wouldn't mind them going after a pure winger - better fit that can jump between L2/L3 -- thinking Niederreiter or Garland (with some retention).
