Provorov will never be a Leaf under Dubas’ management. Ever. Putting that aside, we don’t have cover for his defensive gaffes.
As a player I think he would be a great add but agree, he doesn't fit the culture here.

Friedman doesn't seem to understand that. Coyotes have been asking for 1st round picks (multiple) to even start a discussion for Chychrun. Columbus ain't trading their Bedard pick.

What an asinine opinion to throw out there from Friedman.
You would have to think they will have more than one first going into the draft.

If the Leafs are paying 6.75M for any player it's not a good start if that player is already not worth the contract. Whoever they target should be a player whose performance is exceeding their contract. If they do acquire a LHD for anything over 4M that defenseman should be able to play with all of the Leafs RD (Brodie, Liljegren, Holl, Timmins) without making the fanbase wince.
He's just not the kind of D man that I think we need to add at this time. Even if i agree with you, that Provorov would look ok with Brodie covering for him, I don't think we should be obtaining D men, that need a good partner to be passable defensively. If anything, I think our need is the opposite... someone excellent defensively, and preferably bigger and more physical than Provorov.
philly asked to provorov to play for 2 guy defensive with an average team in front and against best opposite player... Playing as exemple against crosby, matthews, kucherov , bergeron, panarin, aho, ovy, mcdavidline shift after shift and being in the worst matchup of 2. how do you want to look good? Sure all your weakness will be overexpose playing against those player without having tool around you for it

i will compare exemple with chychrun. Chychrun did not play toughest matchup. When arizona tried to used him like philly did with provorov, he was not fine, he was totally trash and played his worst hockey hes ever played. Worst than what we saw of provorov and its not even close.. so they switch chychrun in a role he would be able to look good and help the team

Put provorov with a partner who also can play that shutdown role with a team in front able to play at the same level of those player...

I think the Devils will get Meier unfortunately. They seem to want him more, and they can put together the best package. Unless Dubas is willing to give up Liljegren or something, but I don't think that's worth it. Other than that, the best potential forward add is probably Buchnevich, Boeser or Konecny. Personally I think those are long shots as well. I think the Leafs will end up with ROR or Barbashev

This is the first time a legit insider has confirmed legit interest (and not speculated) about us being in on Meier.

No idea how anyone can compete with the Devils with assets to trade. I don't see the Knights being able to keep up with Toronto and Canes either, they don't have much to offer.

But I do think Meier would be well worth the big asset gamble. Big time difference maker for a cup run.

Look, even if we decide that they are about equal defensively, or even a slight edge to Provorov... the rest of the equation is clearly Chychrun.

Chychrun .78 PPG at 24, 6'2" 220lb $4.6 mil
Provorov .36PPG at 26 6'1" 201lb, $6.75 mil

The only real part where you want Provorov... is because he might be cheaper to obtain... otherwise, this isn't close.

Noting... I'm in the get help up from.. bigger LW, 3C group anyway...

Did you watch how many pts chychrun get playing against top matchup? Thats not just affecting the player defensivly...it was at the beggining of last season ( when they traded oel who played that role)

When he had 2 goal 9 assist (0.275 ppg) -28 in during his first 40 game. Arizona didn't had other choice to change the way he used him ....

Having the assets and wanting to get rid of them are two different things though. Devils probably have the best to trade for sure, but I like to think they don’t want to trade Nemec (2nd overall pick) or Hughes. That leaves Holts (PPG AHL) and Mercer who’s currently playing on their top line.

Also depends on what kind of players / assests the sharks are looking at, is that young prospects, or young NHL players that are 20/21 years old.

Lmao, I don't remember average-ish bottom-6 players and 3rd pairing defenseman being worth this much. I get asking high, but I assumed they'd be lucky to get a 3rd for him.
Some of the asks are stupid. Look at Hagel last year though. He hadnt really proved anything yet and I think it was a crazy price to pay.

He is having a very good year but 2 first rounders, and 2 decent prospects... that was a lot.

It just depends what GMs want to pay. Unfortunately the odd GM ruins it for a lot of other GMs and the prices go up sometimes.

The Tarasenko trade is hopefully a good indicator for this year though. That wasn't too crazy steep for a guy like that.

Looking at the players Grier has acquired so far (Lorentz, Sturm, Kunin, Benning, Harrington, Svechnikov) I could see him preferring Knies to Holtz.

So the big secret here, is you have to use players properly? Both Provorov and Chychrun are like that... Mo too.... But then, Chychrun has every advantage over Provorov... if that's what someone wants.

as I've already stated... I don't think our need is for either of these guys... It's for a defensive strong guy first, who provides size, net clearing ability... probably a RHD version of Muzzin... neither of these guys is that.

Bottom line, there really isn't an argument to want Provorov over Chychrun.

Knies, Niemela, and a 1st for Meier (50% retained).

That would be a tough one to swallow but I think I would pull the trigger.
Take out knies only available nfor one playoff .
We can't sign so he will be traded.

Another question what has he done in the playoffs ?

People want to gut the system when we haven't won a round.

If the Leafs trade for Meier, it won’t be for a one and done scenario. You can re-sign him for 8.5x8 contract. It’ll be tight next year but definitely doable. Afterwards with the cap jumping significantly and contracts coming off the books, it’s definitely doable.
