What does EA or a personal relationship have to do with giving a player some rest?

It's been reported a few times that Gio doesn't want rest or a lighter workload. Theory seems to be that if he shuts down the motor or gets workload reduced, he'll have a hard time ramping up again.

I would tend to listen to the athlete on this one. If it doesn't work for his body or mental focus over the sports science.

And I’m challenging that belief and line of thinking. Also you don’t really know what players are thinking.

Exactly, The players and the coach does... He would know a thing or two with load managing?

If Giordano needed a break, he would get one. If he needed a break months in advance, he's probably not someone that should be counted on either.

Teams don't start load managing months in advance. They just came back from vacation a week ago. Players don't like sitting out either, especially not someone that is as good as Giordano.

Find me a single team that is sitting out top players right now, not trade or health related.

Agreed. Not sure why we would be applying these NBAisms to the Toronto Maple Leafs when most of our core guys are on the younger side. Aside from Gio it's not like we have the Over the Hill Gang here.

Coaches have a million things to focus on. Challenging the status quo is something 99 % of coaches don’t have the confidence to do. Especially when their job is on the line. But I firmly believe a day of or two off for regulars (talking about the older players mostly) throughout the year wouldn’t hurt the team, even though nobody does it. It took the NBA years to do it as well.

They will do it, closer towards the playoffs. Many players get maintenance days off from practices and Im sure some day to day injuries stuff is very much that.

Why do people keep wanting to acquire bad 3rd pairing defensemen on worse teams than ours?

Soucy is solid but yeah, he's not better than any of the top 6 we have right now. He's a bottom pairing defenseman. I don't understand the love obsession with him either. Not sur why Seattle would trade him anyway...

No player will say he wants to sit. A game here or there won’t impact his ‘ramping up’.

Folks are looking at the behemoth D corps that knocked us out of the last two playoffs and each going on to play in the finals (one beating the other for the cup in one instance).

It's a bit late in the game so there's some grasping at straws.

Trade him.

Extend Samsonov and run Woll as the backup.

You can always trade him or worst case buy him out. Having Woll at under 800k for the next two years is huge if he can show he’s definitely ready for a backup role.

I was playing around with the numbers for next year, and if the leafs traded for Ekholm or Orlov they could realistically have Ekholm at 6.25, retain Samsonov at 3.75 Bunting at 3.75, O’Reilly at 4, Kampf at 1.25 and Accarai at 1.25 IF** they let Engvall and Kerfoot walk and career LTIR Muzzin and move Murray. A lot would have to happen. But sign me up for Ekholm or Orlov and I’ll deal with cap hell in 2024-25 when Matthews-Nylander need renewed. 2 playoff runs with Orlov or Ekholm would be surreal.

Wish list: Mcdonagh or ekholm. Probably Ryan because ekholms cost would be enormous…McDonagh would add some nice competitiveness to our D and bump Gio or holl down whatever side.

Kerfoot++ for mcdonagh

Mcdonagh brodie
Rielly lilly
Gio holl
Sandin Timmins benn

If holl goes with kerfoot then just play sandin or Timmins 3rd pair, or switch brodie to LD.

This exactly. If Holl was being played as a #6, he wouldn't need to be replaced.
Agreed Holls fine until he plays top 4 minutes and especially top 2 minutes …then he just has brain farts and it usually ends up in our net a few seconds later.

Rielly... oof.

With O’Reilly and Acciari added, someone like Hartman would be another good addition IMO. Can easily be slotted next to Tavares and Marner/Nylander or on the third line with O’Reilly.

With all the space and lack of capital, I wonder if they try to nag someone on an expensive expiring deal that would is not necessarily worth retaining bc they’re not that good but could be worth a gamble.

I’m thinking someone like Sean Monahan (or even worse - Jo Drouin), or maybe even Klingberg, but he likely actually will cost some assets.

Where would Monahan fit? We’re already stacked down the middle with Matthews - Tavares - O’Reilly - Kampf. Drouin would also be a disaster, he’s terrible defensively and his offensive game hasn’t be very good either… He’s got 0 goals in 33 games this season.

If we’re going to add another forward let’s say, it needs to be someone who can play with a little grit on the wing. Someone like Hartman or Vatrano. I’d prefer Hartman.

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Marner
Kerfoot - O’Reilly - Hartman
Engvall - Kampf - Acciari

That’s really deep forward group with Aston-Reese, Holmberg and Knies still in the mix.

Hartman would be great but I can't see Guerin trading him when they're in the playoff mix.
