Minnesota - the state of disappointment??

Based on my single experience getting stuck in Minneapolis due to being unable to deice the plane for my connecting flight, I'm pretty sure that's -4 Kelvin.

I was also stuck in Minneapolis overnight after travelling there from Gabon on my way to Vegas.

It had been a long day. Gabon-Paris-Montreal-Minneapolis-Las Vegas.

In my case, they couldn't find a crew and when they finally did, and had half-boarded the plane, they de-planed everyone because the crew had exceeded their monthly hours.

Minnesota's population is comparable to that of Finland or Slovakia. Lookin
Brock Boeser, Brock Nelson, Casey Mittelstadt, Anders Lee, Brady Skjei, Tommy Novak, Nick Bjugstad, Justin Faulk, Ryan McDonagh, Ryan Poehling, K'Andre Miller, Noah Cates, Nick Perbix, Mikey Anderson, Will Borgen, Ryan Lindgren, Nick Leddy, Blake Lizotte, Cole Smith, Dylan Samberg, Nick Jensen, Johnny Brodzinksi, Nate Schmidt, Nick Seeler, Scott Perunovich, Kyle Okposo, Blake Wheeler, Joey Anderson, Hudon Fasching, Zach Parise, Justin Holl, Alex Goligoski, Erik Johnson, Derek Forbort, Travis Boyd, Dominic Toninato, Tyler Pitlick

Looking at these names, Minnesota could perhaps ice a team comparable to that of Czechia. This while having half the population, so I'd say they are doing alright.

There's an argument to be made that they have a lot of talent but not a lot of high-end talent, which, for the most prolific state when it comes to producing hockey players, is a bit odd.

Do they have a Pastrnak?

They don't have a Pastrnak, or a Necas, or a forward group as good as Czechia's overall. But they could also ice a much better defense.

I believe these things comes and goes in waves. Zach Parise in his short prime (2008-2010) was arguably the best left winger in the NHL behind only Ovechkin. And a little bit later on, Blake Wheeler in his prime was one of the better right wingers in the league.

They will develop new players of their calibre again sooner or later.

True.. but do the Czechs have a Faber on the backend? An Oettigner in net?

No, but I would argue that Pastrnak is higher in the pecking order of NHL players than either of those guys, but you could make the same argument about Draisaitl and someone like Kopitar and they don’t even come from traditional hockey countries.

I think it’s more of a statistical quirk than a cause for concern.

Like you said, it's probably a statistical quirk but also could be that other sports are pulling athletes away from hockey. Certainly Minnesota is more insane about hockey relative to the rest of the US, but I always think about how JJ Watt wanted to be a hockey player but ended up in football. And maybe an athlete ends up as a role player in football but an elite hockey player, or vice versa.

They are very deep on Defense, a number of guys that could substitute in very easily.

Huh? If I saw this list I would be genuinely very impressed that Minnesota has this many active NHL players that are solid to very good. Is there any other US state that's even close...?
No. But the fact is, Massachusetts and Michigan produce more high-end guys.

Minnesota would still wipe the floor with any state in a best on best tournament. We produce a shitload of good blueliners.

It’s even more impressive when you consider population size

Without looking into it, I would suspect this is better than; every other state, most provinces, and most European countries.

Probably just Ontario, Sweden, Russia and Finland that are CLEARLY ahead. And then maybe BC and/or Alberta, and Quebec (who is in a big decline)
Compared to Michigan - a little better in terms of quantity, nowhere close when it comes to quality

People routinely forget Defensemen exists. Basically, if a guy isn't Top 3 in Norris Voting, nobody knows or cares about them. People always expect the best NHL teams to be whomever has the flashiest forwards and get confused when teams with top to bottom superior blue lines wipe the floor with them in the Playoffs.

Let’s see your team Michigan
I was mistaken and thought we had the Hughes brothers too. A lot closer on second look:

Rust - Larkin - Connor
Watson - Norris - Debrincat
Robertson - Copp - Cotter
Motte - Joshua - Glendening

Werenski - Trouba
Martinez - Roy
Cole - Petry

Hellebuyck
Primeau

Probably missed a name or two I just went down the board on a Michigan active players list

Depth is no comparison. Minnesota can field an actual NHL lineup, albeit one lacking in high-end scorers.

Meh...I'm gonna go with the OP is "being overly dramatic".

I'm from Florida originally, but have lived in Minnesota for the past 15+ years, and am thoroughly impressed, from elementary schools to college levels to the minor pros and the NHL, the amount of talented players constantly coming from institutions in the state.

As many have stated already here...when you produce as many players as the state of Minnesota does, you certainly can round up a bunch of players who ARE middling or disappointing, but at the same time, have many who have reached the NHL level, and succeeded quite well.

And BTW, the OP's list, while it does contain some disappointing players, also has some very good players, some great even, that I think are being categorized as disappointing INCORRECTLY.

So yea.
Filler thread, although, judging by the comments, it did at least generate posts. The kinds of things that happen during an NHL break in the schedule.
We can probably forget this one though once the regular season gets back underway though.

Soooooooo, this has led me to wanting to see a tournament that breaks down into provinces and states.

i think that would be badass.
