Stepan needs to go see Gary Roberts this summer. His conditioning does not look up to where it should be. Even compared to where he was 3-4 years ago. He should be peaking physically.

We'll see how well he does on the bigger ice against the best players in the world. The WJC had him against his peers. I think the bigger sheet helps him but not in his own end.

Callahan already compromised to seven years. He will get seven as a free agent. Its a business. The Rangers and Bartlett spent the last two days discussing the contract. Nothing was accomplished. Callahan is better off waiting until July. Lundqvist got seven and $8.5M per. Plus a NMC. Lundqvist wanted eight years. He wasn't taking less than seven.

I understand what you're saying, but Lundqvist and Callahan are really not relative outside of the fact that they are both Rangers.

Lundqvist is one of the best players in the NHL and will go down as one of the greatest Rangers in history.

I dont know. Is there anyone who knows more about availability and value of players around the league that knows who we could get for Steps (and maybe a 3rd/4th pick)?

I don't know about availability (outside of Stastny who I don't want), but if you think Stepan is getting packaged with a 3rd or 4th for any sort of upgrade, you're off your rocker.

Stepan, good prospect (Kristo, Fast, Miller, etc) & 1st, might get you a legit first line center, but I'm not sure that even does it. 1st line centers don't grow on trees and they're not readily available. To get them you need to pry them from teams with huge packages or draft them.

Anybody wanting to trade Stepan should have their age posted under their username.

any high end impact deal will usually involve our best players going the other way.

stepans name would be in any of those deals. not sure the appetite to move him.

unless hes moved and we get back a better 1/2 c, he stays. derek really isnt our problem. if he plays the 2c, hes right in that sweet spot for his game.

we need to get better- bigger/faster/more creative at center. beevers gone next season and right now, stepan and brash are not 1c's.

you keep the good stuff. you move the weak stuff and you fill in with better stuff.

capice ?

I wonder if this garbage FO even considered packagin DZ and Cally together for a significantly upgraded player or package? That'd require foresight and actual planning so I guess I already know the answer. Is it true Girardi is only looking for 6 x 5.5? That's a really good deal. If it's true and we somehow don't get that done it'd be really bad.

I have a feeling Callahan is going to come down to something like 6x 6.25 but Sather will want it to feel like a win so he will want it to be down to something like 6 x 5.85. It's not a win in his head unless it goes below 6 mil. 6 x 5.85 would be ok with me.

Drury got 5 x 7 and he was a center, had actually won, wasn't even a ranger, had scored more and more often especially in that season. Even with the cap rising 5 x 7 is an overpay but I could deal with that too even though it made much more sense on Drury (and we all know how that turned out). But when you look at it that way it makes Callahan's 7 x 7 (scratch that 7 x 7+) all the more frustrating and head scratching

Couldn't trade Callahan before the Stadium Series, too many jerseys sales would be lost...

The Rangers only real shot to get another 1/2 C (which they need desperately) is to trade for a prospect or kid on the verge. Definitely some risk involved. But taking on that risk is the only way to land a player like that. Once established they cost too much. Once they hit UFA they are overpaid and a side effect is often lost motivation.

Someone like, Kerdilles. Probably attainable. Far from certain. Having 2 "JT Millers" increases the odds that one breaks through to become a 20-40 guy to compliment Stepan. Lindberg is coming along nicely as a 3C.

Too late for Johansen, Coyle, Bjugstad. Never had a chance with Barkov, Monahan. Is Girgorenko available?

Honestly, I don't even think we see him play games, barring injury.

Lets make a trade Rangers, I dont want Callahan pulling Parise or a bad hamstring during the olympics

Nothing wrong with moving Stepan for another center. Someone of a similar age with more speed, maybe not as dependable defensively. This Org doesnt make deals like that though. Too much thought.

If they feel the game is moving away from smart, slow guys, why would they keep Richards?

Sather's ego. Only legit reason I can think of, if its even legit...or, they still think he's good enough for his cap hit and aren't looking forward far enough, or they think they've figured out a way to beat recapture...

In other words, nothing stupid these guys might do is out of the question to me, esp. when you have little Jimmy saying Sather is the best guy for the job...

I think he's our best shot at an "elite" prospect.

I doubt the Rangers let Cally walk. If we don't trade him, I think we re-sign him. Buffalo knows this. They know if they want Cally for the next 5+ years, they need to trade for him this year.

They have Girgs and Hodgson already at C. They are REALLY weak on the wings. There's been some drama with Grigs regarding the whole QMJHL situation (no matter how minor, it's there).

Sather's ego bought out Drury, traded Gomez, sent Redden to the A.

I can blast management all day for not providing enough foresight.

But this? this is making a move just for the sake of making a move.

Why is trading 1 player for another who fits the system better just making a move to make a move...

Well for one, because the system / player valuation methods seems to change on a whim.

For another, it is difficult to support trading the best center this org has developed in what, decades, for a mythical unknown player who may or may not better fit whatever system is in place at the moment.

I said there is nothing wrong with moving him. Didn't say he should be shipped out tomorrow. Didn't say there was some mythical player who is available.

The Ego's some of you guys have is ridiculous

I'm not really understanding the kind of move you're describing. Can you share an example?

Trade Stepan for legit top 6 winger, flip winger + for O'Reilly. I guess I'm more bullish on ROR than most so again I suggest googling his name and hockeyprospectus to find the article written by a guy named Vollman. Not only does it make the case that he's a tremendous talent at C, it also points out that O'Reilly was voted by his Erie Otter teammates as the top player academically.

Colorado sees Duchene and MacKinnon as top 2 centers and John Mitchell is doing a job for them at 3c. O'Reilly is qualified at 6.5m next season; Elliotte Friedman suggested a month ago or so that Colorado may not want to do that. I'm guessing that quite a few managers around the league will be very interested if O'Reilly is in play this summer. I really hope it's the Rangers who get him. Talk about captaincy material.

Around trade deadline/roster freezes this place gets beyond comical.

There is no point in talking about trading Stepan unless its for some kind of Sather-pulls-a-rabbit-out-of-his-hat kind of return.

Team looks like its been clicking pretty well over the past few weeks and people are calling for moves, just for the sake of making a move.

oh yeah and the sentence "Sather/organization had no kind of plan or foresight" is getting cliché around here

might a deal of callahan and kristo entice buffalos interest ?

would love to aquire the big russian centerman ?

buf gets their future capt and dependable rw and a kid who looks to be close to a top 6 nhl job.

I see a player who reaches 20 goals only in a career year.

Do you realize that Hagelin is averaging 18.45 goals per 82 games in his career? Do you realize that this year he's on pace for 20.5 goals per 82 games?
