He's a project. Let's go trade a 1st pairing defender for him.
Seen enough of the Avs this year... If he continues his upswing, he'll be just like Shattenkirk...
He's a project. Let's go trade a 1st pairing defender for him.
The Preds play a system closer to what Tortorella preached while he was here. Klein isn't a bad defender. He's been regularly getting ~20 minutes per night for 3+ seasons with Nashville. It wasn't until the Preds added Seth Jones that he saw his minutes decline.
Calling him a bottom-pairing defender is definitely more than a little disingenuous.
25 year old winger who's highest NHL offensive output has been 25 points in a season.
A 22 year old defenseman that may or may not develop offensively.
And we trade a guy who is paired up against the toughest opponents we face, plays 22+ minutes a game, and is key to the success of our penalty kill.
That is, and would forever be, a top 3 worst trade in Rangers history.
Why can't we get a #1 for Girardi, or Callahan for that matter?
Girardi is worth every bit of the rumored salary they are discussing with him.

Agree. If he continues the way he is developing, he's going to be a revered offensive defenseman in the NHL. 10+ goal, 40+ point player.
Girardi, Stralman, Klein should stay. Deal McIlrath for a top 6 winger
If Girardi goes, I don't know if Stralman can take 20-25 minuted on the 1st pairing. We'd have no "true" 1st pair RHD. If Stralman goes, we'd have:
Girardi
Klein
McIlrath (assuming he's reading)
on the right side. How would management feel with Klein on the 2nd pair?
I don't know, RGY. I think McIlrath could become our very own version of Douglas Murray in a few years. Those type of players are invaluable.
Looking at it at this moment, I wish we had taken Tarasenko over McI. I can't see where McI fits on this roster unless Klein gets moved (which is very doable with his contract, and could very well happen).
McGinn is the bigger issue I had with the offer you suggested. Why do we need him? What does he bring that we don't get from Dorsett when he comes back?
I understand the interest in Barrie's upside, but I'd prefer a pick over McGinn - and there should be some serious contingent value as well. How about Barrie and a 2014 1st, plus a contingent 2015 1st & 3rd if Girardi re-signs?

I don't dislike McIlrath; I think he has upside. But you have 3 RHD who are veterans, none over 30 yet and are solid, steady defensemen. I think you can get Stralman re-signed on a good deal. Re-sign G. McIlrath is now blocked. I understand what McIlrath brings is unique in that we really dont have that over the top nastiness but how valuable is that in the new, faster, and more skilled NHL? Is a guy like Klein enough? Over the past couple weeks we have seen Staal, G, and McDonagh become more protective and physical in front of the net.
Didn't Dallas and St. Louis love McIlrath in his draft year? Wonder if there is a deal to be made there.
I still feel McIlrath has a future here, though. If he's ready any time soon, Klein or Stralman can be moved.
So let's project...Girardi & Stralman sing new agreements, Klein is here and McIlrath is on the way. 4 Right Handed Defensemen.. What a terrible problem! What are we going to do???
Oh, yes. Slats would have people lined up at his door. That's exactly how Nashville got such good value for Klein.
Currency is a good thing.
It has nothing to do with nationality, but with style of play.
And I don't know about "settled down", I'm not feeling much safer with Moore-Klein than I did with Moore-MDZ.
Klein makes some painful breakout passes that gets them into trouble.
E: I double checked, and his PDO was actually pretty reasonable. A +/- 0 is pretty much expected from how they've been playing after a huge boost from the Penguins game.
Maybe I'm too hard on Klein, but he just isn't good enough at moving the puck to fit into the top-4 on a contender.
