It's basically this....

1st line = xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx Boeser
2nd line = Debrusk Pettersson xxxxxxx

3rd line = O'Connor Chytil Garland
4th line = JoshHog Sut/Blu Sherwood

Boeser and Pettersson are shells of what they were to start last year. Both look like they are lost with who thay are playing with (Boeser) or wrecked confidence with a messed knee lost training and weak.
Debrusk is good and bad pretty good right now but is still a 3rd wheel top6 not a cerebral player

Garlands magic has worn off. He's worn down and has little to no help with where he's getting used.
Chytil has tunnel vision. He's gonna get rocked. Very poor top6 option or a good 3C
DOC is a bad 3rd liner who at maximum can help 2 good top6 forwards at times.
Hoglander Blueger Suter are depth pieces. Not even quality top9 forwards
Did Bains play?
Joshua has been a write off. Basically a 4th liner this year

Certainly can push up a player or 2 at times like Sherwood who has shown capable and of course Joshua last year but we're missing 3 top6 players or at least 2 and Joshua to come back to us.

Boeser you have to find someone to play to get an effective goal scorer and back out of the red.. Pettersson should bounce back to at least a good top6C (green).
Debrusk is what he is. He's green with 2 good players when he's on but he's not gonna create offense or QB a top6 line.

If you are talking overall, yes of course we need more offense. I don’t think anyone would disagree. However this is the post game thread and we were clearly talking about this game.

Local guy who went undrafted and worked his ass off to get a sniff of the NHL. It was a nice feel good story when he was an unknown and was trending up. Now? Ugh, time to end it. Bains is just not an NHLer right now.

fair i went on a tangent but i also disagree about the D being at fault.

Other than Debrusk and Pettersson the forwards produced nothing. And that's not just because they linked on a goal. They were all largely out of sync too slow to make plays or lacked skill and creativity

How much of that is being on the pk a ton, or not getting sustained pressure cause the defence doesn’t keep it in or bobbles the puck. Someone said HDC was 9-9. If our defence holds the puck better or breaks out better that’s a lot of chances. Not to mention less pk time means more offence.

I will say I hate the current pp setup/two units…it’s just not working.

It's been a rotating cast of Aman, Raty, Karlsson, Bains, and Lekkerimaki for the entire season because they're just looking to reward Abby's best players. I wouldn't read too much into calling up one over the other.

Kinda worries me that we're seeing Aman and Bains produce so well at the lower levels, and show nothing up here.

Disappointing thing w Bains is he's actually improved his skating relative to last year to the point where it's not such a huge limitation. It's far from a strength, but it's better. Just hasn't figured it out in terms of what his role is, how to be effective at this level this season.

Had the feeling that if Hughes was playing could have won this one. Without him, they just can't generate enough good chances. Good thing about the game was they were losing with some younger players in the lineup.

Good

Silovs - gave them a chance to win. Still too much jittery side to side movement but came up with some excellent saves. Looked more focused than at many times he has in Abbotsford. At least gave you some hope he could provide some backup help if Demko remains out.

Hornek - played his heart out and did as much to contribute to up ice offense as anyone.

Mancini - given expectations showed well. Definitely has the speed to play at this level and moved the puck fairly well. Can see there are glitches that likely will be exploited but appears the raw talent is there. I'd say a positive start. In this one he was a step up from EP2.

Poor

Boeser - not as awful as last night but still far from good. Strugging in all areas of the game b/c skating is so poor. If Allvin doesn't trade him and we are getting into Benning territory. Get something while you can and forget about this Boeser self rental BS. (Remembering Benning I noticed the whole Ekman-Larsen fiasco and the Guenther curse raised its head again in this game.)

Myers - faded badly as the game went on. Being asked to do too much in the absence of Hughes. In back to backs age may be catching up with him. That said, he is still very much needed on this back end.

Bains - couldn't stay in the play at all. I know Tochhet is looking for offense and he must figure that it is more likely to happen with Bains than Aman. But Bains is simply not close to NHL caliber.

Others

Hoglander - had some good moments and didn't understand why he didn't get more time late in the game. Thought he had much more chance to score or set up plays than someone like Joshua (who was overplayed in this game)

Forbert - late penalty was suspect as were many of the calls in this game -especially the early one on Utah. Overall Forbert is looking decent and better than expected. At times, you think he could be a long term top 6 player who won't hurt you.

O Connor - just not enough in the play. You wonder about the contract and whether he can sustain the flash he showed in his first few games. Right now the Canucks have too many players with marginal offensive ability - just more or less plugs like Joshua that just can't produce enough offense

EP1 - there were moments when he showed better speed and ability to find open ice better than he has for most of the season. Gave you a little more hope that he still has it.

Team might hang around near the playoff line (if Lankanin can bail them out) but really you have to ask what is the purpose. I can't see them going anywhere if they end up playing someone like the Jets. Might be better and hold off using the cap space in the off season and avoid giving up assets for a rental. But this team will never do things that are in the long term interest of the team. Probably will trade one of their promising young d-man for aging forward like Tofolli.

Games like this show that any more moves they make this season need to be with an eye to a longer term and not as they did last year, trying to be something threatening in the playoffs.

Since the high PDO days, this team had trouble scoring. Chytil is like another Mikhaeyev, lots of hustle and no finish, not a whole lot of chemistry with Boeser, who is better finish but no hustle. DeBrusk is legendary streaky, and EP is what he is this year. Garland has ran out of steam. So there's all the top 6 options right now. That's how you spell anemic. I think under tocchets system we are likely to expect 2-1 or 3-2 islander type wins than anything more .....entertaining.

Rather, they aren’t getting prime shooting opportunities, which is way more concerning. They aren’t quick enough (whether their skating or their puck movement) to get the puck somewhere useful.

I just watched the Washington Capitals repeatedly get grade-A scoring chances against an Oiler team that looked Lemaire-ian against the Canucks in last year’s playoffs. The Canucks are just massively lacking offensively.

i think that is why we need Q hughes back ASAP, with him at least he will create some grade A chances for our forward

This year has been an unmitigated disaster distractions and injury wise. I think it's pretty much accepted that stars were aligned last year and this is the expected trajectory of this current core. While Lankinen is good, he's not prime Demko, so without that huge X factor this year, I really don't know what they are expected to do once they get in via a wild card spot.

Yeah, I was also somewhat implying that there's a systems issue at play that isn't lending to them being able to be creative. But If Chytil/Hughes are getting chances in this system, I don't see why anybody else cannot.
 
I’ll keep saying it — this team literally needs a miracle in Rantanen this offseason to reach the next level. There’s like no other path with this team unless the hockey gods drop a superstar offensive driver in our laps. Taking out Boeser and adding someone like Ehlers might help, but we still need someone on top with an offensive x factor or else we won’t score.
