Tonight’s Game
  • Had 21 blocked shots, 15 missed shots, 30 something chances to get the puck to the net; have to move your feet and change angles
  • Would rather players shoot a little less hard but just get the puck on net
  • Are double clutching which signifies a lack of confidence
  • Need to take the next two days to figure it out
  • When you get shots through, when they don’t get blocked, you earn possession time
Silovs
  • Was really good; really proud of him
1st Period Penalties
  • Three penalties in the 1st; can’t take a penalty with 6 minutes left & can’t hold a guy like that
  • When you don’t score goals, everything is magnified
  • Need to pick your spots better; can’t grab anyone
  • A lot of penalties from the defence and it needs to be sorted out

Off the top of my head (didn't watch the entire game) I can think of two times Pettersson did this.

Tocchet should just go into the locker room and re-recite whatever pump up speech jon cooper gave for team Canada. Just change a couple words etc.

With Hughes out and EP40 at basically 'half-speed' this team really has no chance. Nine goals now in five games. Lowest scoring team in hockey since Jan. 1st.

It screams 'mediocrity'. I'm almost of the view that it wouldn't be in the best long-term interests of the franchise to somehow 'sneak' into the playoffs this year. They're closer to lottery land than they are the Stanley Cup.

Better to continue the re-tool and hope for a decent return for the likes of Boeser and Soucy at the TDL. And pray that somehow between April and next September, they can keep Hughes healthy and that somehow then can get Pettersson and Demko back to even a half-shadow of what they've been.

And Tocchet has to be on the clock. One decent season; and one mediocre one. A lackluster start to next season, and he's probably gone. I always wondered if 'Tocchet hockey' had a 'shelf-life'. I think the answer is probably 'yes'.

31st in shots per game
25th in goals for
23rd in high danger chances for
32nd in 5v5 xGF
31st in 5v5 xGF/60 tocchet system in a nutshell.

I could easily see this team losing all five games on this trip. Almost a guarantied loss night in L.A. on Wednesday.

I mean, 15 shots on goal against a team like Utah? Sorry, that doesn't cut it. Cue up the TDL. Time to move some bodies out. Hopefully they can find a guy to bite on Forbort as a depth option. Soucy and Boeser should get them something.

I'd like to see them elevate Raty, Lekkerimaki and maybe Sasson or Karlsson. Time to give these guys some NHL games. They might take a step back with them, but long-term the experience will benefit them.
sell them all of by this week. deadlines march 7. soucy 50/50 they mgiht have to retain some of his salary i think. boeser should go. suter as well.

it was boring. fell asleep after the first period.

Honestly, it was boring but its because Utah is even crappier than us right now.

We all bitch and moan, yeah, but what amounts to basically a 2-1 game being outshot by double...

Y'all were booking this for guaranteed loss night when you heard Silovs was starting, what's the difference if we lost 6-5 or 2-1? A loss is a loss.

I'm really not seeing the trends y'all are seeing. I see a team at the end of its rope, yes, but only because we had to play containment defense all night. Utah is much faster than us and I thought we played a veteran game on the road. Which is why we lost 3-1 and not 7-1. Hey, how did the Rangers do against the Sabres and alpha male Miller? 8-2?

Yeah they dominated possession, what did y'all think when we had to trade Miller? Blueger is the only C on this team that can dictate possession with any reliability. And he's spitting above 50% by a hair. I'm sure lots wanted Petey gone but that would have been a blunder. Bobby Orr only had to quit hockey because he couldn't play without his speed and his agent was like all agents and only saw a cash cow to hitch his wagon to and could do little else for Bobby.

EP's defining quality is not his speed, it's his smarts. Smarts that were (not ruined but) emaciated by Miller's presence. I won't say toxic, because I think to some extent Miller was right. But I don't give a shit about drama, I watch hockey for the hockey. There's a reason I think Entertainment Tonight is a blight upon society. Stop watching hockey like that. Stop gossiping, stop speculating.

I probably won't because I'm me. But at least have a bit of faith and courage guys. It's life. It's not supposed to be easy.

E: I'm gonna keep having to furthermore this forevermore....Poe't' didn't even know 't.

On good teams, the puck usually finds who wants it the most and since Tocchet came in, it usually has. On great teams, they execute those lightning plays and bottle those suckers. Ironic word choice given the last team I bless with my shit luck in 2015. But they keep doing it. Tampa Bay. That was the most boring exciting hockey I've seen.

Long if you are winning, winning compensates for boring. Short if you are not, losing boring hockey games sucks all joy from the game. .

Tocchet really unhappy with Forbort in the post-game presser. The late holding call that opened the door for Utah to win it on the PP, was particularly troublesome.

Instead of letting the guy shoot the puck into the corner, and then turn and win a puck battle--he tries to hold him up and gets dinged for holding. I mean this is a veteran d-man we're talking about here--not some rookie like D-Petey or Mancini.

But the lack of mobility on this Canuck blueline has been a big issue all year long. And without Hughes to control the puck with zone exits, they're just getting forechecked into the ice in their own zone.
