Kristo? I don't know. I was just hypothesizing as to what the OP meant.

Honestly, I'd prefer to find a way (not necessarily in a Stepan deal) to get a young guy who's still not proven in the NHL, but is a high-level prospect/rookie. I'm holding out hope we can work something like this for Callahan or Girardi, although I'm not overly optimisitic.

I don't see a prospect in the system that makes up the difference between Stepan and Kesler.

I was simply stating a difference in what getting younger actually means. Stastny does not do that. I agree we should strive to get better. We are not entering any rebuild mode. It is ok to be smart with our money

Understood.

Ill say it right now. If this team makes some fiscally prudent long-term moves like trading Callahan and buying out Richards, then turns around and hands Stastny a 7 year deal, I'll be really pissed.

This is Sather we are talking about. If he doesn't do something ridiculous i'd be shocked.

Would guys really not be happy with this?

Kreider-Stastny-Nash
Hagelin-Brassard-Yakupov
Zuccarello-Miller-Pouliot

We get younger, quicker and more offensively potent. We would absolutely need to roll a bruising, shutdown 4th line though because that 2nd line definitely is a defensive question mark. BUT, I feel we can get away with it because of our D and Hank; put them out strictly with McDonagh/Girardi if possible

I agree with this. Trading for aging guys (or signing them) is really not the answer. Getting a Stastny or Kesler is just setting ourselves up for another Richards-like disappointment.

Not that Seguin was realistic since we don't really have a Loui-type guy to get him, but something of that ilk. Pay up for a legit young center propsect.

Girgensons
Hertl
Grigs
Forsberg (who we should have gone after last year)
Etc.

Call, see what the asking price is. It's going to be high, package a D-prospect. Package a wing prospect. Send a pick. Send them Cally, or another roster player, maybe even Stepan.

For to long this position has held us back. When was the last time we had a high end center. Lindros? Gretzky? I mean it's been forever. Fans will be pissed at what we pay, but they are a clear cut need in the recipe for success.

I've suggested Grabovski previously, who I wouldn't mind getting. But all accounts currently have him re-signing with Washington. He would definitely be a nice cheap(er) alternative to Stastny, although it's pretty clear Stastny is the overall better player

That's the problem though. Why weren't we in on him. He didn't even cost that much. Why weren't we in on Filip Forsberg. It's absurd. You don't even hearthat were inquiring about these guys.

Maybe we could have got Forsberg for MDZ+. Grabovski it was simply money.

Grabovski isn't a top-6 center on a contender.

We lost a game we should have won, Stepan was the player deemed by the masses to be the player performing furthest below his ability, and so now we want him gone. Pretty predictable fickle logic.

Stepan's near ppg over 55% of one season is looking more and more like the outlier. All things considered this is his worst season so far. It's not fickle logic to assess whether he is a long term component. Next year is a contract year. Considering the year he's having, and considering how players have been known to ratchet it up in a contract year and then regress for a few seasons, the Rangers should be considering moving forward without him. Especially if he fails to elevate his production in the post- if there even is playoffs.

Personally, no, I would not be happy. That lineup lacks grit and leadership. Center depth is still a big weakness. Potentially worse than Stepan-Brassard-Miller. Could be a regular season tiger though.

I disagree. He's not a #1, but he's a good #2. Who on our team, could have certainly slotted into that #1.

We don't have top end centers. We should be in on these guys. Especially if they're signing one year deals at the value that MG did.

I'm not saying this is a long-term fix. But he's better then what we're rolling.

No, I wouldn't be. Stastny is overrated and will be paid accordingly. That lineup is not championship caliber.

Filppula with a fractured ankle.

Cue the Callahan to TB rumors?

haha i doubt Callahan would get dealt to the Bolts, they have a lot of young depth. i wont be shocked if Namestikov or one of their other youngsters get called up now

I hear you on the grit. We would absolutely need to roll a bruising 4th line that can PK and take the body. But you really think Stastny is a downgrade from Stepan!?

Also, Stastny is an assistant captain for Colorado and Nash has been a captain as well. We also would still have McDonagh Staal and Girardi (hopefully), so on the leadership front I think we would be fine. Young, yes but isn't that the trend in the NHL today?

Vanek turned down 7 years and $50M. One of the hockey insiders said many NHL GMs were floored Vanek rejected that contract. The Rangers would be fools to give him that or more. Vanek is getting 7 years and at least $7M.

i dont know why many GMs would be floored with that. it was the islanders that offered him the deal and in a few months multiple teams will be offering him that money and he will have his choice of where he wants to play.

Nope. Very thin at center and that looks like a lineup that would be abused in the playoffs. If the team signs Stastny, and I'm not saying they should, they need to keep Stepan as well and have some real center depth. Center is by far the most important forward position in today's game.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I don't want them signing any big UFAs this summer. If they buy out Richie, trade Cally and/or Girardi, I want them to sign their RFAs, promote Miller/Lindberg to play 3C and then keep whatever space they have left. I was just curious as to BRB's opinion.

Stastny isn't a downgrade, but he's not enough of an upgrade (especially with the lost cap space) to make this team a winner.

And are you really comparing the leadership of the best player in the NHL to that of our young (albeit very good) players.

Crosby and Malkin are not comparable to anyone on our team.

Edit: The team would be better if they kept Steps and got Stastny, but that's still not the answer.

Sather's ego bought out Drury, traded Gomez, sent Redden to the A.

Drury retired. Sather traded Gomez to free up the cap space to sign Gaborik, and Redden had to be sent down or else the Rangers would have had to trade from their core to get under the salary cap.

So yeah, I say more necessity. Additionally your statement reeks of ...... whatever you want to fill in the blanks with.
