Here's my question:

What do you honestly think we're going to get for a rental Callahan?

I don't think a sign and trade is likely to happen, because the teams that are willing to pay Cally whatever he wants are likely in a position where they don't want to give future assets up. They'll wait for FA.

So, in return for a UFA rental Callahan that a team has little to no chance of resigning to a reasonable contract, we're going to get, what, a 3rd liner and a pick? If that?

My point is that we're going to get what teams loading up for the playoffs are willing to give up for a 2nd line winger. But, we're a team that looks playoff bound. And the 2nd line winger is more important to our team than he is to most.

So here we're giving up Callahan as a rental, but probably only for a rental's return, which historically is just getting some value out of an expiring contract, and not something you can count on as a solid, sizable move for the future.

I know letting him walk for nothing is considered the worst thing in the world for some, but if the options are a palty return, or carrying a much better right wing depth into the playoffs, I honestly think between how this team has played, how Cally has played since return from injury, and his percieved importance to the team, it makes more sense to take him with us into the playoffs than to sell him off for peanuts.

tl;dr- I'd rather bring Callahan(and or Girardi) into the playoffs with us and risk losing them for nothing, than trading them off for the meager return rentals will bring.

This sums up my views exactly.

I'd sign Girardi though. No problems at all with the terms rumored about him.

Keep Cally and let 'em walk.

Keeping Callahan and letting him walk is such a mind-numbingly bad decision it isn't even worth arguing.

Why? If the return is a Chris Stewart + mid round pick, what does that do?

Weakens our club this season, breaks up our chemistry, pulls the captain off the team for a guy who will be a UFA after next season.

Well, first off, I seriously doubt the return would anything less than Stewart and Edmonton's 2nd rounder.

Also, yes, Stewart for the rest of the season and at least through next season is more valuable than Callahan for the last 15 games and playoffs (where he routinely decides to disappear, BTW).

Still not the worst option, IMO.

Heh, true.

Agreed but it is somewhat questionable if that makes the decision. Stewart for next year is more valuable than no Callahan of course. But the question becomes if Stewart is more valuable than 4.15M in cap space to spend in the offseason. I would tend to think he is.

Shocker that this isn't going to be settled by Friday. (Sarcasm Font) How do you guys think this makes Sather look ? He's already set 1 deadline that is about to come and go without him doing what he said he was going to.

Reminds me of the time I was at Lincoln Center.....

That's going to happen anyway, unfortunately.

So keep him for the end of the season and the play-offs (if we make them) and have zero to show for it?

I say move him.

I've been preoccupied with work lately. Have there been any actual rumors or rumblings over the past couple days?

You have to think about it like this. Would you trade Chris Stewart and a pick for Callahan? If so, don't do that trade. Rangers are playing great hockey. Why can't Callahan be our "rental" player? The only way you trade Callahan is if its a can't miss trade to be honest. You don't try to compete and then trade your captain for a slug like Stewart and a pick. Now we'll see if it's just bargaining tactics by Sather.

Personally...if Kreider and Hags could score more , I think we WOULD be a contender . Right now Hags is just a pretty skater and Kreider is still figuring things out...2 scoring Wingers especially one with Kreider's size put us in the ring with the rest . Mind you...a fast , lanky playmaking center and a puck carrying D man would not go astray either . ;)

I'm so happy some of you guys aren't the GM of the rangers. A player has a good game and everyone wants to keep the player as a "rental". Uncle Larry was arguing to sign or deal G and cally and now he changes his tune and all you guys jump on board.

Cally wants to much money . The offer the rangers offered in my opinion is an over payment . We must deal him, this team is not winning a cup.

Has Glen ever delivered a good contract to an Unrestricted Free Agent?

Has any other GM in the league given out more terrible contracts (Post lockout) then Glen Sather has?

Things are looking good for the Callahan camp. There's an agent there that is about to get paid a very nice commission. THat agent has to know that he is going head to head with the Santa Claus of the NHL.

WIth that said, I scratch my head ...And can't stop thinking about the definition of insanity! I have a feeling things are going to get crazy again while the head of this organization is chewing on a ratty old cigar expecting a different result this time around.

Guys like kreider and Hagelin are important to any winning team, kreider will continue to grow but with hags this is who he is. Hagelin is a 3rd line lw playing in the top 6 which tells me this team needs a top 6 lw bad
