It was a mistake to not explore Jagr on the FA market when he signed with the Flyers.

It was a mistake to not explore Jagr this off-season before he signed with the Stars.

It would be a mistake to not explore Jagr now with the deadline approaching.

He shouldn't command much more than Morrow and Iginla did.

Derek Roy too.

The cap of $64.3M doesn't allow the Rangers to load up on experience. Even if/when they trade Gaborik, they are taking back salary in the trade. Anaheim has gotten production out of Holland and Etem. Bonino has been a good player for them too. Young players. Chicago with Saad,Shaw and Kruger. Leddy too. Jimmy Hayes of BC has played some for them. Jeremy Morin scored a goal yesterday. The Hawks have tried to add players but they're too expensive. Teams are knocking each other off to grab Clowe with zero goals this season. Bad shoulder. Not a great skater. Go with the youth.

As usual, RB is spot on.

save your breath, because many are not getting it.

Oh no, we get it. You think those guys will give the team "balls" and thus will resolve the bigger issues. Yet neither player is helping their current team with their own issues, hence they're trade bait.

I get the idea of being harder to play against, but you know what's really hard to play against? A team that can score more goals than you.

Clowe and Torres help a team score more goals. Clowe not so much recently.

Gaborik at 100% salary this year, 80% salary next
Rangers 2015 1st
Stralman
Eminger

to Boston for Doug Hamilton + Bruins 2013 2nd

Gaborik without headache of fitting in major cap $$ allows Boston to be competitive this year + next.
Stralman helps this year + beyond
Eminger throw in for reserve this year
future 1st self explanatory

Dougie Hamilton expensive, but is a major block for NYR.
Boston has Chara, so can do for now, w/everybody else on depth moving up.

Plus we'd have 2 seconds for this year, more options to move up.

I haven't the slightest clue of McBains value so ill leave that to you guys but on the main board some are speculating McBain would be a good fit for the rangers.

Also saw he and McD used to play together.

Some are saying Car wants a defensive Dman back.
Would it make sense to trade Girardi?

I don't know if I want to trade G but I saw a conversation about it the other day.

Something around Girardi for McBain, again I have no idea how the value is so one team could add

I like McBain, I made a proposal earlier to get him, but no way in hell I am trading Girardi for him.
The point is to get one more decent RD, not downgrade.
Eminger + 3rd for McBain.
Or maybe something around Boyle is as high as I would go.

Phoenix is 17th in GF/G. San Jose is 28th. I just don't see any direct correlation between adding more grit and scoring more goals. I look at this team and I don't see a bunch of guys who are afraid, I see a bunch of people who are underachieving as a group. I don't see how bringing in another underachiever in Clowe is going to remedy the situation.

Torres I can see a case for. Albeit a weak one.

He's also a major block for Boston, and therefore he's untouchable. Especially when you're sending them a bunch of garbage. You also can't retain more than 50% of a contract.

Well, if you're going to have them bear the whole burden for their team's offense... Do you not think Rick Nash or Marian Gaborik could help a team score goals?

There is no correlation between scoring goals and having grit. Some players can do both though.

Clowe, you would be betting on him re-finding his scoring game. Torres has scored at a borderline top-six pace at even-strength for 5 years now.

They need energy. They are lethargic. Bring in players who can create energy and create turnovers and make other teams look around after making a pass. It works. The Rangers had that with Dubinsky, Fedotenko (not a dirty player, but solidly physical) and Prust.

While I agree with you, I have seen some arguments made here that other teams started scoring goals when they acquired grit. :skeptic:
Which is a tangential relationship at best.

I wouldn't sniff that trade if it was Hamilton and something significant.
You go from proposing for Taylor Hall, now you move on to a rookie defenseman, while giving up our best goal-scorer, 2 defensemen who both play top 4 minutes, and a 1st. Damn Berny, happy April Fools to you too buddy, you outdid yourself!

I understand what you're saying. I just think betting on Clowe is a suckers bet. Especially if he's looking for a contract extension from whatever team he ends up with.

Like I said, I can see a case for Torres.

I dont disagree with your thoughts on energy and grit.

I do disagree with your penchant to endorse seemingly every retread or damaged good to hit the trade market. Acquiring a declining Clowe and extending his contract might help short-term, but its terrible roster management long-term...just brutal.

Hopefully Sather and Gorton are looking for the next Brandon Prust -- a guy whose best days are ahead of him.

I hope so too. I would honestly rather Torres + another player in that same mold of Clowe but writing him because he has been playing with a banged up shoulder and calling him run-down is, IMO a mistake. I wouldn't overpay for him.

All I am trying to do, is get across the point that this team is WAY too easy to play against. It's laughable how soft they are.

They need some sort of presence in the top-9.

I agree with that, and I think Torres is an alright option, but Clowe is not an energy player. He's slow and he looks more intent on protecting his shoulder than he does on using his body effectively. At this point it's like bringing in Mike Knuble for energy. He's a hard-nosed guy, but he's not a spark-plug.

You want to bring in energy for the bottom six? That's fine, but if you're not looking long term with those guys, it's a waste of assets. I think you're romanticizing things if you think a couple of gritty guys are going to come in here and revitalize this team. There's far more to it than getting out muscled.

I really would not mind Torres signing here for a couple of years if he was acquired.

Clowe has looked worse than normal up until a few games ago when he sat out for a bit to rest the shoulder. He has always been a perimeter pass-first player. He has also always been a force to move along the boards and a good puck control guy who can protect his teammates.

It depends on what he is asking for on his next contract and what SJ is asking for in return. If it's too much, it's too much.

I would not be at all surprised to see whoever the Rangers acquire at this deadline to be a longer term piece.

Players get moved all the time and the change of scenery does them good.

Bottom six depth would go a long way, especially with players that can ignite your team. We need some role players, character guys.
