We even have the room for a retained Karlsson? I'm thinking of Pinto, Sanderson, DbC...

Concerning trading Joseph; not only do I feel like we need Joseph's offensive depth on our team, but I also feel like it wouldn't sit right with the team, perhaps especially Chabot, after Joseph signed a team friendly 4 year deal.

Joseph's deal wasn't team friendly in the slightest.

Got overpaid based on a 12 game sample size of good production.

Karlsson over DBC is pretty easy for me, especially if its 8m Karlsson vs 9m DBC. That kind of money is much better spent on RD vs wing.

Not to mention we can trade DBC for really good assets and get Karlsson for not very many assets. Sell high, buy low.

Seems to really up his motivation level when he gets a chance to play up the lineup. He got that chance last year post tdl... He has to accept his role and bring that on the 3rd line. If he does he can be effective enough to earn his pay cheque. I like his energy when he is bringing it. If he doesn't he doesn't bring much

The last time I spoke to this contact regarding Karlsson was before the season. He had told me that any time they got together Karlsson refused to talk hockey, engage in it or discuss at all. Whereas as guy like Freddy Claessen is obsessed with it and studies and enjoys it but unfortunately sucks.

Karlssons passion and drive for the game has long been questioned

Seems like a well vetted report on an opinion that equates wanting to talk hockey in the off season to passion and drive.

This is bang on. The trade of Paul for Joseph was a good deal until Dorion overpaid him in money and term, I was expecting something for 3 years at less than 2.5.

How are we buying low on Karlsson when he’s off to his only good start ever in San Jose?
That's a good question.

Plus, most folks are saying the Sharks need to retain. Then, there's other ideas about working Zaitsev into the deal as well.

Then, there's the assumptions about what, or how little the Sharks will want in return for moving a good trade chip.

I get that there's a lot of dismay & reaction to our poor start and this kind of thing is a reaction to all of this.

It really depends on the deal but if there is heavy retention on Karlsson then it could make some sense

the price won't be as high.

The team should have just got Marino

So you guys.. There’s a team that has a RD that’s playing the best hockey of his career and putting up over a PPG. He’s signed for five seasons and his current team would eat enough salary to get him down to a 7 million dollar cap hit.

They’d also accept Zaitsev back, where he likely can’t block the trade and they’d also gladly take Joseph to even the cap long term. They’re probably only going to want a few additional assets after that, and not even blue chip talent.

He’s got a NMC but would waive to come to Ottawa. Just one small caveat - he used to be the captain of your team. It’s Erik Karlsson.

Personally, I think it’s a perfect match. Our system is essentially Run ‘n Gun hockey where EK would slide right in. We might finally get Brinsky going with that slick EK sauce.

This is a dream scenario. A elite D at a fraction of the cost to acquire. You roll the dice on this 110 times out of 100.

Again, all up to Erik. He’s not coming back to be our saviour - he’s coming back because he’s the missing piece.
That's interesting. Can you provide a source for that - something from Grier or senior management within the Sharks? I think I've missed something so I'd like to read up on this a bit more.

If they retain 50 percent, then who else are we bidding against and how high will the price go? Prime EK is behind us, no matter what his numbers state, gotta be careful here

Friedman said we'd still like to re-sign Zub and Debrincat. I could only see us go after Karl if we don't manage to get those done, mainly Debrincat's contract.

RD is definitely more important but you are talking about an old RD with tons of red flags vs a 24 year old high end offensive winger.

I took a bit of a gander at GM threads around the league and pretty much every team's fans think their GM should have gotten Marino.
there were a lot of fans here that wanted him when the deal went down

yes now lots of people wish they had him

People are complaining now that the costs are too high but Marino did not go for a whole lot

That’s about the same sample size that we’re using to justify bringing Karlsson back.
If you watched him last year I don't think that's quite fair. I try to watch a lot of SJ games because I'm on the west coast and like to watch him. He's getting traction because his start this year is superstar level again, but he was really good last year before he got injured again. He was also decent to start off in SJ and had Burns in there with an obviously poor fit both being there. It's really been a rough couple seasons in between that were the problem, and that transpired while the team was collapsing, which is when we saw him at his worst here as well. I really think the downfall of this guy has been exaggerated. He was not worth near his contract before this season's play, but he's not the liability he's made out to be imo.

Its also spent alot better on a 5 year term on a 24 year old than a 32 year old when the entire core of the team is under 25.

Theres simply no money left for Zub, and Debrincat. So they will be losing one of those guys if they add Karlsson plus whatever assets it takes to get him. They need a D man like Zub more than Karlsson given the current personel. Sanderson is evolving in front of our eyes. The truth to it is this team isnt remotely close to its peak. They shouldnt be making any moves like they are at their peak. Sanderson has played 16 games, Stutzle is 20 Pinto is 21, Grieg is 20. Just take a log off the fire and let it develop. This teams defining draft was 2020!

Karlsson is playing some unbelievable hockey but its not the play right now. The goal is to win the cup, its not happening this year or next unfortunately but in 3 to 4 they could be there by then Karlsson wont be worth his contract he will be 35.

I would argue that a young waiver eligible offensive D who plays both sides is not as small of a return as most make it out to be. Most teams don’t have a similar prospect that they would have been able to offer.

That can't be a hard rule. There's exceptions even if its a young mans game these days and some of these young guys getting the bag are being paid on potential they may never meet, which isn't all that different from a deteriorating veteran value wise, its just a safer bet.

There's obviously huge value to this team bringing in a 34 year old Giroux on a 3 year term like they did, which is the same runway as a 5 year term on a 32 year old, so I fail to see the difference other than an assessment of the player as not being the guy.

Obvious difference is that EK has always been a high-end producer outside of the last couple seasons, while Joseph has never been a big scorer at the NHL level.

The choice wasnt Giroux or Debrincat I dont see it as the same thing but I do see the argument you are suggesting. I dont think there is much of a debate that a 27 year old player is typically better than a 35 year old. The other argument that I am trying to make is the time this team will be peaking isnt right now its going to be in 2 to 4 seasons.
