Brannstrom is not it.

Needs to be replaced.

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-JBD/Thomson
Holden-Hamonic

That should be our D.

So you say Morrissey is not available, but request our top line RW who is on team friendly deal, or our leading goal scorer/potential future number 1 C for the rest who are simply a number 3 at best?
objectively bad take on Branny. Branny over hamonic and holden short-term ans medium term on third pairing.

Our rhd aint it besides zub. JBD will be good as 3rd pair minutes this year and maybe later as 2nd pair. We desperately need an upgrade on our 2nd pair rhd.

If we’re not going to fire DJ (which I don’t think we should) we have to make a big trade for a premium RD if we want to try to win this season.

It might be time to consider bringing home the king.

The reality is though a few more loses and we’re guaranteed to finish on the bottom 1/3 of the standings. Trading our 1st now is a real game of Russian roulette.

The hate on Holden is very strange to me. He is solid, does his job and rarely makes mistakes. Veteran who is liked in the room. He is an ideal 3rd pairing guy.

When him and Zub were paired together last year is when the team got some stability.

Holden is fine in a 3rd pairing, 16-17 minute a night role.

Him and Brannstrom had developed chemistry and were playing well during the 4 game win streak. Then big brain DJ decided the Minnesota game would be a good time to "get Z in there".

Very clearly played as a capable top 4 for stretches until he was overworked and looked out of his element. As you said, our best stretch of hockey arguably came with Holden-Zub as our shutdown pair. Holden has also put up some of the best d performances this year.

It's not hate, he's a 35 yr old UFA who is likely in his last NHL season. I agree he is a solid 3rd pairing guy & if DJ puts Zub with him when Zub returns they could have a solid shutdown tandem for the remainder of this season. JBD seems to be doing fine with Chabot & is also looking like a solid defensive defender. The weakness IMO now with Zaitsev gone is Brannstrom on D who continues to get beat & overwhelmed in his own end by bigger & stronger players. Taking him out & putting Zub with Holden should fix that problem for a while & create a shutdown tandem.

It's what we do next yr with that 3rd pairing & who will be able to replace Holden's role. I think they could be okay with JBD, Zub, Hamonic & maybe Thomson on the right side. My guess is that they will try to slowly insert Thomson to see if he is a future replacement for Hamonic or not. That leaves Holden's left side to replace next yr & that could be done either internally temporarily with Heatherington or longer term with Kleven once he is NHL ready. They could also go out & get another 3rd pairing left shot for a yr or two that wouldn't be too expensive until someone internally takes the spot.

Branny has made a few good passes from behind our net the last few games, that has resulted in goals on us lol.

The Devils have a fundamentally well-organized team (based on last season and this season's metrics) and Marino fits in like a glove.

I would also like to have Marino on the Senators but he wouldn't necessarily be the same guy under DJ Smith.

DJ playing Brannstrom for 9 minutes last night was baffling. Under a better coach, Brannstrom will end up being a PP specialist that can shave some minutes off anyone that is being played 24+ minutes. If Dorion panic trades and includes Brannstrom in a deal for help, we'll probably see him perform much better elsewhere.

Brannstrom was on the bench because he is a liability defensively & is consistently being overpowered & beaten by bigger & stronger players every game. The sooner Zub comes back & replaces Brannstrom the better this team will be, he is the weakest link. I doubt he will perform better anywhere else, he is what he is, a very small PMD who is a liability in his own end. No team can afford to have a player on their team whose only job is as a PP specialist, everyone wants two way defencemen now who are mobile & can defend. If he is so good on the PP why does he only have 2 pts?

Because he only averages 59seconds of PP time on a pretty shite team PP?

Chabot averages over 3 minutes of PP time per game and we aren't getting results. Why not deploy another player like Brannstrom who can pass and shoot decently? Heck, put Sanderson or Hamonic there, anyone, but swich it up because Chabot ain't working

Friedman on 32 Thoughts podcast:

* Ottawa allowed Zaitsev’s agent to shop around but there is nothing out there.

* Ottawa is out looking for things. Looking for defence and center. Might put Zaitsev in minors to earn extra cap room.

* Phone calls to Winnipeg or Vancouver.

* Doesn’t think Heinola is the kind of move Ottawa is looking for. Thinking of someone better.

* Doesn’t think it’s Myers from Vancouver, he mentions the NTC.

If Myers and Heinola ain't options, really hoping that DeMelo or Schmidt end up on the team. Just goes to show how bad Zaitsev is that no body wants him. Dorion should be willing to take future considerations from a team that has injuries right now, but I doubt anyone is offering even that. Waivers also showed nobody wants Z.

He's also often the only dman who makes anything happen offensively.

But hey two bad plays means he should be gone lol. Nevermind that every other defenseman has made as many or more mistakes because reasons.

Brannstrom has coughed up the puck a few times lately with bad end results and that has been noticeable. But, a singular focus on Brannstrom doesn't seem warranted. Chabot has also made as many or more guffaws that has resulted in goals ending up in our net. Hamonic has made a few, similar errors as well. Chabot's effectiveness and good play has noticeably decreased this year. At the end of a game, or in overtime, you have to grimace when Chabot is on the ice as a goal against seems rather too predicable. I'm not sure what's happened with Thomas or why his play has declined, but he's been in a noticeable funk in the "defending" department.

Claim Balcers and trading for Demelo is an immediate and cheap upgrade.

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Demelo
Brannstrom-JBD
Holden-Hamonic

Bottom 4 could interchange, JBD has looked solid, Hamonic only played well when paired with Sanderson who CARRIED him

100% this.

Other defenders like Holden, Hamonic, Zaitsev, etc... have their own shortcomings, but they don't see the ice time cuts that Brannstrom receives.

Brannstrom is a bottom pairing guy right now, but he has top 4 offensive skills, so why not even try him on the PP more, especially since Chabot isn't working the best right now.

I mean if we hadn’t already kicked tires on Murphy over the summer that would be shocking, particularly since PD was obviously in touch with Chicago.

Shattenkirk is a bit meh from me, definitely an improvement but I wouldn’t pay much.
I think the Shattenkirk thing was to unload Zaitsev. More cash this year but free of any commitment next season.

If DJ remains as coach you have to upgrade Brannstrom. You can't have a top 4 with two rookies + a struggling Chabot and then have a 3rd pairing that plays less than 12 minutes on some nights because the coach doesn't want to put them out there.

If you bring in a new coach, maybe they'll trust and develop Brannstrom.

Brannstrom played 8:56 (under 7 at ES) yesterday and got 3 shifts in the 3rd period.
I think whoever the coach is will see Holden JBD as the best 3rd pairing.

100% this.

Brannstrom does not have top 4 offensive skills. The results are there for all to see.
