According to capfriendly, we have two of the top 50 right defencemen in terms of salary. Zaitsev is #33 and Hamonic is #49. Let that sink in for a moment.

In total, there are only 77 RD in the league that make over 1,000,000 per season. You can then reasonably assume there are only 75 right defenceman available in the entire league that could possibly make our team better.

I really don’t know who we could go after to make the D better. Severson maybe? But the Devils have no need to move him, and he would cost a fortune. Same can be said for Mayfield.

Well I think if edmundson was right handed I think he’s an upgrade on Hamonic. I like matheson was dissapointed Habs got to him

Yeah, if he was right handed perhaps. Although really, I don't know how much of an upgrade he'd be on Hamonic.

Please god no, not Dvorak. Overpaid 3rd liner.

Also I don't see how Edmundson helps us.
I do think we could use someone with a lot of pushback/bite on D.

Getting one that can also play in the top 4 is pretty much impossible via trade unless you want to overpay.

I expect one of the reasons we didn't go for Marino and aren't willing to budge on the price for Chychrun hinges on this: Dorion wants a badass mofo, we have very little bite on the backend.

We do? I'm not sure that's the issue with the D.

should of taken all those draft picks they used on Debrincat and gone after a RD - sign Formenton to fill out the top 6

try and win games 3-2 instead of 6-5

Should we claim Rem Pitlick on Waivers?

Is that sarcasm ?

This is most likely what Habs fans are proposing on CF as we speak. Here's the logic :

Pinto hasn't been able to crack a weak roster until now so he is overrated and Brannstrom is a bust. They paid a 1st and 2nd for Dvorak, Sens would be lucky to be able to make this deal

Brampton
Scott Mayfield
Matt Roy
Dimitri Kulikov
Nate Schmidt or Dylan DeMelo
Dante Fabbro
Carson Soucy
Chris Tanev
Brett Pesce
Nick Jensen

Slightly overpay for any of these guys and our defense immediately is stronger. C'mon Dorion

Tanev would be amazing but I don't see why Calgary would be listening

Until this year Calgary would never move Tanev. They probably still wouldn't. But their RD now has:

Andersson
Weegar
Tanev

There is only so much ice to go around. I imagine IF they decide to move on from Tanev the price would be massive.

In an ideal world I would have used Connor Brown + to try to pry one of those RD out of Calgary. I think he would have been a great fit on a Sutter team.

I'd overpay for him considering how much ice time Weegar and Andersson would take up.

Flames can use some cost controlled talent and prospects.

I'd offer Boucher, Thomson, and two seconds (washington's second) to get the deal going. Boucher is a Sutter type player, they could use some defensive prospects, and Lassi would give them something there. If they don't want Boucher and would prefer a Jarventie, Sokolov, Ostapchuk, etc.... do it. Tanev instantly makes this team harder to play against.

Our D is very bad, it has a lot of issues.

I'm just saying that we could stand to have more of a physical element to our D.

Agreed that it is not the biggest issue with the D though.

Adding physicality won't solve our problems. It hasn't worked in the past, and it won't work now. What we need is dependable top 4 D. Doesn't matter if they are physical or not. We have one and a half right now.

I really dont think Hamonic has been an issue. He has been solid as a number 4. The teams second pairing has been a legit 2nd pairing. Its the 1st pair that is struggling.

To get a true top 4 RD that is much better than Hamonic we are likely looking at a cost of

1st + Greig if a team wants futures

Or someone like Batherson if it’s a team like Calgary looking to win now.

Since Hamonic has been fine I’d wait.

Tanev and Weegar are their top pairing with Weegar playing his offside. He stated early in camp that he prefers to play the offside and that seemed to be their plan.

They have four clear top four guys in Hanifin, Weegar, Tanev and Andersson. Anyone else on the roster in Zadorov, Stone, Kylington, etc. are clearly suited for the bottom pairing, so they'd just be creating a hole by trading one of the four away.

The logjam some claim they have is actually non existent, they just have the luxury of having four actual quality dmen belonging in those roles. Sutter also loves Tanev, so it'd be pretty surprising to see him be the guy moved if it came to that.

I'm pretty sure what's going to happen is either Hanifin or Kylington being traded this off-season, depending on whether Hanifin is willing to re-sign or not.

The main problem would still be there. A coaching staff not capable of instilling efficient defensive hockey systems.

Yes, Flames could really use a guy like Brown. Who would have thought it could have been a good idea to hang on to him a little bit longer?

I'd take a flyer. Probably a better option than Brassard right now.

He'd fit next year. Don't re-sign Gambrell or Brassard. Motte will most likely cost the double

Try to trade/waive Kelly eventually

Well we only have:

1 month till Formy can't be signed.

There is some smoke around NYI and I'm ignoring Eklunds stupid post of the day (e4)

If we can pry Mayfield out of there Soon! with a handshake contract (3.5x4 or wtvr, wait till seasons end to sign it, probably cost us (2) 2nds or 2nd+3rd, etc.) then we have a solid solid D core starting to take shape.

All we need to do is push down Motte, probably by bringing up Greig around Christmas if he can start performing well in Bellville. Angus a good option too if he can get going.

That team starts to look far more dangerous...
