I get what you're saying but Hamonic, in his short time here, has played much better than Zaitsev. It's not really close IMO.

MDZ is a LD so it's a different comparison but I'd still take Hamonic over him any day of the week.

Good teams have Hamonic-type players on their 3rd pairing at $3M. They don't have Zaitsev-types making $4.75M in their lineup. Period. Getting out from under Z's deal is important. To me it's more important than moving Murray who has demonstrated that he could be a good player. He might recoup value. Zaitsev just needs to go ASAP.

If Zaitsev continues to suck he can sit. Holden can play both sides, as can Brannstrom who is likely pushed out of the lineup because of Hamonic.

Also Thomson and JBD should be capable of playing bottom pairing minutes next season.

Hamonic really isn't needed. The acquisition made little sense when it happened and makes even less sense now.

Hamonic would have made more sense if he came free instead of costing a 2nd round pick. Cap space is one of the most valuable resources league-wide right now and the Sens definitely gave some away free and threw in a 2nd round pick.

I'm shocked that the Sens werent able to move Zaitsev and a 2nd round pick to Zona or another bottom feeder (Chicago?) this year. Dorion REALLY needs to get rid of him so that Smith cant play him anymore. He's awful.

We didn't trade a 2nd for Hamonic, it was a 3rd.

Harmonic is better than all of those guys other than Holden. Doesn’t make sense to dump him

Chicago is tanking. They are tearing it down to the studs, getting rid of everyone.

Arizona probably either wants a real nice sweetner or simply doesn't want him. He is really bad, that makes moving him harder.

I'd hold onto Hamonic for now. He wasn't that good last season, but he wasn't bad. They'll need the RHD depth if they're pushing for a playoff spot.

How much better? He makes 3.25M and cost a 3rd round pick to acquire.

Brannstrom will probably cost around 1M to re-sign. JBD and Thomson cost less than 1M.

If we're looking to cut salary to make room for Giroux and a top 4 D acquisition, it makes a lot more sense to trade Hamonic and his 3.25M salary and replace him internally than trade a couple 2nds to move Zaitsev.

Based on what Kassian cost to move, it'd likely take a couple 2nds packaged with Zaitsev to move his contract.

If he only had 1 year on his deal a 2nd round pick cost to move is reasonable, but he still has a couple years left.

Connor Brown was a nice add for Ottawa in that trade, but when a GM wants to trade a guy after the 2nd year of his 7-year contract there should have been some red flags lol

We are trying to improve and make the playoffs no? Hamonic is the best option for us over those guys

Zaitsev is quite a bit more useful than Kassian.

- Right-shooting defencemen are a scarce resource, so they have value, even with deficiencies in their game. Teams need warm bodies to play that side. Look at Cody Ceci. He's had no problems finding jobs. Big, physical RWers are not scarce.

- Zaitsev can play 18-22 minutes a night. He can eat up minutes on a bad team. Kassian, even on a bad team, isn't playing more than 10-12 minutes.

I don't think Zaitsev willd cost as much to move as Kassian.

The Leafs are doing some phrenology on Murray's skull. Once the dweebs in their front office design a concussion-proof goalie mask for him the deal is done.

Seems that way...

That or the medical thing is just stalling by the leafs.

I would imagine that Buffalo was willing to accept more of a risk. The priority for them was moving from 16 to 7 and hitting the cap floor. If Murray can play, and play well? Great! If he's not and he's dead money? Ah well, still got the draft pick!

Toronto, on the other hand, needs him to actually play, and play well. They'll need to analyze the risk much more closely.

Medical thing sounds like BS.

Aren't most trades contingent on passing a physical/exam anyways? Like the deal gets signed up and the trade goes through but the player still needs a clean bill from the acquiring team's doctors?

These "intense" discussions have been going on for too long with no trade.

Wow borgstrom buy out. That guy fell fast didn’t he

Is Hamonic really that bad of value? 3.25 is what, second pair money? I think he's been a capable bottom 4 guy for us so far, so maybe a touch overpaid, but not MDZ bad.
He was fine when expectations were literally “let’s try to at least not let in 4 goals tonight”
