Zaitsev is quite a bit more useful than Kassian.

- Right-shooting defencemen are a scarce resource, so they have value, even with deficiencies in their game. Teams need warm bodies to play that side. Look at Cody Ceci. He's had no problems finding jobs. Big, physical RWers are not scarce.

- Zaitsev can play 18-22 minutes a night. He can eat up minutes on a bad team. Kassian, even on a bad team, isn't playing more than 10-12 minutes.

I don't think Zaitsev willd cost as much to move as Kassian.

I don't know about that. Zaitsev has played 18-22 minutes a night in the past but he's looked terrible doing it, so no team trading for him is going to play him in that role unless they are tanking.

If we're looking at other examples in the past couple years of D with bad contracts dumped:

Stralman with 1 year left @ 4.5M salary cost a 2nd + Kolyachonok (recently drafted in the 2nd round) + 7th to move
Gostisbehere with 2 years left @ 3.25M salary cost a 2nd + 7th to move
Staal with 1 year left @ 3.25M salary cost a 2nd to move

I think you're being optimistic with Zaitsev. Would be surprised if any team took him on for less than 2nd+3rd.

I think even Dorion himself was surprised at how good his Debrincat trade was and is looking to balance it out with a more Dorion-esque type trade that we all know and hate.

The universe has to balance itself back out.
Ya, probably best to wait a little longer on the victory laps and parades.

White has been bought out. We got Debrincat in a trade.

What remains is:
  1. Move Murray
  2. Move Zaitsev
  3. Acquire good RD.
  4. Giroux
There's some promising signs on Murray, but the deal has not been consummated yet, and we don't know the cost. We don't even know if MM can pass a medical.

We are currently 2/6ths (1/3rd) of the way there. You know what they say: Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

Those prices you mentioned would lead me to believe that Zaitsev would also go for 2nd + late round pick. Not 2 2nds or a 2nd + 3rd.

Brannstrom is still on this team and often showed down the stretch last season he could play top-4 minutes and succeed. Why does he constantly get the shaft in these scenarios?
Because all he showed was he could play top 4 on a crappy D. Ideally he is out of the lineup if we want to be competitive.

He has 2 years left on his deal, not 1 like Stralman or Staal. He's also nowhere near as good as Gostisbehere, even at the time of the trade.

He's equivalent to Ghost at the time of the trade.

Ghost had major injury problems and was a healthy scratch multiple times in Philly by the end of his tenure there.

I think the perception amongst GMs and coaches on Zaitsev is not nearly as bad as it is amongst fans here.

11-6-2 record with him in the lineup, we could do worse.

He looked bad with. Habit but good in a bottom pairing roll, he was sold as Sanderson partner but if you’re just happy with competent defending he’s good, if you expected more you’ll be disappointed

Ghost was on pace for 18 goals and 40 points over 82 games when the trade was made.

He was, is and will always be a far superior player

If Zaitsev continues to suck he can sit. Holden can play both sides, as can Brannstrom who is likely pushed out of the lineup because of Hamonic.

Also Thomson and JBD should be capable of playing bottom pairing minutes next season.

Hamonic really isn't needed. The acquisition made little sense when it happened and makes even less sense now.

The acquisition made no sense for sure, because we already had Zaitsev and company. But now that we have all those players getting rid of Zaitsev is imperative. He's on the books for more term, more money and plays much worse than Hamonic.

The time to get Hamonic was 2 years ago, for free, instead of fooling around with J.Bro, Gudbranson and other bad players. But now that he's here he can contribute and is definitely in the top 6. Zaitsev needs to go and if it takes a 2nd so that DJ won't trot him out there for 20+ minutes a night then so be it.

We need a good RD but even if we don't get one, running with:

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Hamonic
Brannstrom - Holden

is a big improvement on last year.

How many forwards are we gonna have if we get both?

Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson
Debrincat - Stutzle - Giroux
Formenton - Pinto - Joseph

so Pool is playing 4th line?

Same question would be raised - who does he remove? Joseph? No thanks.

I would love to acquire Puljujarvi, the guy is such a character, would be entertaining but I agree that it should not come at the expense of losing Formenton or Joseph; I love a fast team and those two are probably our fastest players.

lots of time till the start of the season, and we still are in the hunt for a top 4 D, that won't likely come without losing a roster player. I suspect both Formenton and Joseph are fair game if a top 4 RHD with term is coming back

I have a feeling Formenton will be gone in a package for a top 4 d-man. If so, Joseph-Pinto-Puljiu is fine with me.

Chris Johnston seemed to suggest we would get Puljujarvi back in a Brown to Edmonton deal

Makes sense. Would also make it a little easier to understand why Formenton may be made available to acquire a top 4 D.

Not that Puljujarvi plays the same style of game but Joseph could be shifted to LW on the 3rd line and Puljujarvi could play RW beside him and Pinto.

Ghost had a career-impacting knee injury, was a frequent healthy scratch, and cleared waivers prior to the trade.

Between Gostisbehere's injury and a series of healthy scratches, he appeared in only two of the Flyers' last 26 games before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the NHL to suspend play in March.

If you had watched him game in and game out, no doubt you would have hated him just like people on this board hate Zaitsev. The points were a mirage. He was a bad defenseman, and still is.

Yeah, I was thinking we would flip Puljujarvi if acquired, but maybe this is the plan.

I like that were targeting big fish but I also don't wanna see too many changes to the lineup, cant watch the coach spend a month figuring out his lines at camp.

Formy Brown is a dominant 1st pk unit
