Anchors a 2nd pairing. There isn't a drop off in defensive ability from pair one to two. Hell Kevin Klein really solidies the 3rd pair right now, even with J.Moore still learning on the job.
Exactly three steady pairings. This is the first time in a WHILE where you don't need to worry every time a pair goes out for a shift.

I wouldn't be opposed to adding Stewart to replace Poo on the 3rd line.

But at the expense of our captain. No bueno.

He could be an addition we look to pursue through picks/prospects to help bolster a cup run if we resign both of Girardi and Cally.

He should not be part of a package to replace our captain though.

He has looked good with Zuc & Brass so is there a need to replace now? Why fix what's not broken? Although Zuc & Stewart is somewhat intriguing.

If that is the best package we get for Cally though (I sure hope not), you take it to avoid him leaving for nothing.

I am praying to whatever deity there isthat we do not give Callahan $6M+ and anymore than 5 years.

I would GREATLY prefer it if we moved him altogether, because the return he'd garner is simply more valuable than he is + an albatross at this point, by FAR.

It's name is Tomas Haake. You're welcome! :yo:

It was reported that it would be a package including Stewart. So it depends on the rest of the package obviously.

I'd much prefer E. Kane.

What about Chris Stewart, Dmitrij Jaskin and the Blues' second rounder for Callahan? I think I'd be ok with that.

I don't think the Blues would. Even if Callahan and STL could come to terms. Swap Jaskin for a lower level prospect and it'll be close.

There's a slight chance we could be getting Rattie out of this deal. Pretty much no chance we get Jaskin. the blues are really high on him.

Ryan Bourque?

I may have worded that poorly. Not as in Rangers add a lower level prospect to trade for Jaskin. As in swap out Jaskin from that proposal and replace him with a lower level Blues prospect.

Don't see why STL would want Bourque. They are swimming in offensive, young talent.

I wouldn't even give Callahan six years. At most, I'd go 5 years for 25 Million

Was going to say this... $5 x 5, maybe even $5.5 x 5 years... It's a small raise over what he makes now, and he's not worth any more than this in my opinion... Forget the intangibles (which I am appreciative for), a 6-7M player is someone in the realm of the Sedin brothers, Patrick Kane, Patrick Sharp... basically, high scoring offensive players

for proof, here's a list of all current forwards making anywhere between 6M and 7M this year:

18. Marleau, Patrick » F SJS 34 2010 2014 4 $6,900,000
19. Datsyuk, Pavel » F DET 35 2007 2014 7 $6,700,000
20. Stastny, Paul » F COL 28 2009 2014 5 $6,600,000
21. Carter, Jeff » F LAK 29 2011 2022 11 $6,500,000
22. Toews, Jonathan » F CHI 25 2010 2015 5 $6,500,000
23. O'Reilly, Ryan » F COL 22 2012 2014 2 $6,500,000
24. Kane, Patrick » F CHI 25 2010 2015 5 $6,500,000
25. St. Louis, Martin » F TBL 38 2011 2015 4 $6,500,000
26. Sharp, Patrick » F CHI 32 2012 2017 5 $6,500,000
27. Getzlaf, Ryan » F ANA 28 2013 2021 8 $6,500,000
28. Vanek, Thomas » F NYI 30 2007 2014 7 $6,400,000
29. Sedin, Daniel » F VAN 33 2009 2014 5 $6,100,000
30. Sedin, Henrik » F VAN 33 2009 2014 5 $6,100,000
31. Backstrom, Nicklas » F WAS 26 2010 2020 10 $6,000,000
32. Hall, Taylor » F EDM 22 2013 2020 7 $6,000,000
33. Hartnell, Scott » F PHI 31 2013 2019 6 $6,000,000
34. Burrows, Alexandre » F VAN 32 2013 2017 4 $6,000,000
35. Michalek, Milan » F OTT 29 2008 2014 6 $6,000,000
36. Lecavalier, Vincent » F PHI 33 2013 2018 5 $6,000,000
37. Thornton, Joe » F SJS 34 2011 2014 3 $6,000,000
38. Staal, Jordan » F CAR 25 2013 2023 10 $6,000,000
39. Eberle, Jordan » F EDM 23 2013 2019 6 $6,000,000

Now tell me, can/does Callahan directly compare to ANY of these players in terms of offensive production? In a vacuum perhaps, but a good deal of that list are players that are regular 30 goal scorers

The defense needs to be absolutely left alone. It's fine as is with the 3rd pairing being made stable with Klein.

what about Bourque to the Avs for Heard???

Rangers can use a young potential 4th line center/winger that they can develop... Bourque has ties to the Avs for reasons because of his dad. maybe it would work.. Cliche is playing for that team :amazed:

I don't know Heard but if you're desiring him I'm gonna go out on this crazy limb here and guess that he either hits and/or fights a lot.

He's not a big dude so it has to be one of those.

Asking for Stewart and Schultz would be too much right? I feel like them asking for Schultz would be like if any other team asked for Kreider which right off the bat I would be totally against.

Stewart and Jaskin is way too much imo. Jaskin is projected to do wonders in the NHL and there's no way the Blues are just going to let that up.

We'd be lucky if we got Stewart and anything else at this point, which is tough to say but it's true. I personally like Stewart as a player and have nothing against him but obviously I don't want to part with Callahan for him.

Imagine if Blues fot Cally on the same line with Backes and Oshie, they'd be like the Miami Heat of the NHL (AKA the Chicago Blackhawks). There's no way they aren't gonna offer something for him.

If it was a 3 way deal that would be interesting though. Any thoughts on that one?

if history is any guide.......the caps continue to rise. I know it wont rise forever, but here is a graph of all the cap years plus the next two based on some articles i have read......

so.........is 6 million that bad?

Forever is tricky, but the cap will go up. Just as we always will be able to say, when I was young "x" cost ...

Also, the PA has a 5 percent bumper. Just google NHLPA 5 percent inflator or something. Zero growth and the cap is still going up 5 percent. It's in place because its not good when the cap is standing still, that is an disadvantage for FAs.

Read for example:

The issue appears to be term, not money

He reportedly wants 7 years @ $5M and Sather offered him 5 years at $6M

Looks like six years could be a compromise but that contract would suuuuccckkkk

Just for the record, the number reported is 7x6, not 7x5, right?

$6M for Ryan Callahan? Are the Rangers out of their minds? Even for 5 years. Its still $6M per for 5 years. The Rangers better hope Callahan saves them from themselves and continues to demand 7 years for $6M. Girardi will cost $5.5M over 6 or close to $6M for 5 years. Nearly $12M for both.

If the cap is going up next year I don't see the problem here. We have a bunch of dead weight coming off the cap as is with Boyle, Asham, Powe, Moore, Poo.

And we don't need to replace that "dead weight"?

The New York Rangers don't need a bottom six. Hockey is different here.

I would take that deal and run if I'm the Rangers. I think we'd need to add.

While generally i agree with your sentiment, you should probably only look at UFAs who got between 5-7 million.

News from Sweden, Detroit is going real hard for Vanek. Seems like a good match. Don't know if reported in NA.

Parise signed for over 10m on avg for his first 6 years. If Cally signs for 6y30m it's less than half of what Parise got.

Just look at what Clarkson and Clowe got.

Makes sense. Detroit has a lot of good prospects to make it happen. I'd cry if Jurco or Tatar were on the Islanders though.

Re: Callahan, if he really rejected 6 million per over 5 years, I won't be shocked if he's actually traded. Sather has always hardballed his own players in contract negotiations. Look at the Jagr situation. Ryan McDonagh should fire his agent. He's one of the best contracts in the league, best on the team for sure.
