How about trading Cally for a nice prospect/pick, AND getting him back in the off-season on a reasonable deal? Talk about helping the team.
Well he's in trade talks because the Rangers find his contract requests to be unreasonable, so...

There is such a thing as a hometown discount - it equates to how much value there is to the player in not having to uproot his family and start over someplace else. That has real value. And there are even RARE cases where a player will take less to help his team construct a winner (I think Brown in LA was on record as having done this - which actually only points to why Cally can, and will, expect more in an UFA deal), however they are the exception, not the rule.

Best case, you save 3-5% for the convenience of the player not having to move, disrupt the lives of his wife and kids, learn a new system and organization, break a comfortable routine, etc. But that's it.

Prospal's entire career came at a discount. He was the last of a breed of guys that regularly took less in the 90s and early 2000s.

Developing story, NYR grant permission to at least 1 team who has already talked with Callahan's agent. More on Sportscentre. #TSN

The Rangers are following the Sharks last year which gave teams permission to speak with Clowe. A signed Callahan should bring back more. Callahan can get an 8 year term if he is on that team by the trading deadline. Clowe's agent couldn't agree to terms.

Well you could also say that the Gods have been far from kind when it comes to our 1st rounders, but yeah I get what you're saying HBNYC.

At the end of the day I'd love to see us keep this guy. I just think he's got a lot left more in the tank than people here generally think. He's been proving people wrong his whole junior and NHL career.

He may not be worth $7 or even $6 mil, but he's far, far from chopped liver. I'd be just fine with a $35 mil 7 year deal that keeps him a Ranger for life. There is a lot there more than just the dollars that has to be worth something.

I agree for sure. He's only be 35 in the last year of that contract.

I wouldn't mind Slats going 8 years either. Have a tradition carrier in NY.

No doubt, the AAV worries me short term. In the coming years. Not long term. 42m 8 years.

On thing, it does seem like the market is picking up. Slats should never do something before the OGs. Let Cally play there and show cast himself while the pressure builds up among the contenders.

No more Blue Jackets cast-offs. I still think Pittsburgh makes sense. I don't care if they're in our division; I want the best return possible.
