Best case scenario: Cally kills it in the Olympics and several teams want his services with less than a week to the deadline when the roster freeze is lifted.

Worst case scenario: Cally gets injured in the Olympics (or beforehand) and then jumps ship in the summer.

Epic Worst case scenario: The Rangers have a fantastic deal in place after the Olypmics but wait one more game to pull the trigger and out he goes...

like when Mike Richter was suppose to be traded and then got hurt. as a Rangers fan it wont shock me if Callahan got hurt in the Olympics after hearing about all of these rumors..

Here
If we're trying to win something this year, then keep Callahan.

If we're not, then trade him and get the best FUTURE player possible.

Don't do this half arsed "Trade him and get a decent player back and also a middle round pick" nonsense.

All in or all out, Sather.

Problem is cap. Most likely need to take some $ back and thats in the form of a roster player. Plus if you look at the amount of free agents and current Rangers roster players that may sign elsewhere (or be bought out) it would be wise to get a roster player back. (but a prospect or high pick or both wouldnt hurt either)

Sather will not lose cally for nothing.. The return will make fans happy . The problem is cally is a blue collar guy that fans love and is ultimate team player getting anything back that isn't loved right off the bat will be viewed as a lose.. The other problems are lots of guys are available right now market is thick not thin right now

I may be assuaged somewhat, but I'll never be happy about this.

It would have killed me to see Richter traded. So glad he was a career Ranger. So I can see why some fans would want Callahan re-signed long-term.

I don't see why. If you have a chance to replace him and pick up some futures, why not?

Seems like today's version of a hometown discount is signing a contract at market value when the player could have received more by hitting free agency and engaging in a bidding war. You rarely see a Brodeur-esque type contract where a player leaves money on the table and takes below market value to remain with a team.

I can't see who could come off LA's roster for Callahan.

Maybe:

Matt Greene + some very strong non-roster assets for Callahan

and then

McGinn for Stralman

Not something I'd love, but something I could see the Rangers doing.

If theres any other way of setting Ranger expectations, PM me with it.

Okposo is on a ridiculously good contract, too

Okposos contract isn't that good. It was signed at a time when he had proven less than Stepan. Plus, it takes him to UFA status. They'll get good value out of the contract while he's there, but there is a definite downside to his deal. A great contract would keep the player controllable for longer.

It isn't the norm and fans shouldn't expect players to take "hometown discounts".

This is a business. For the players it is a short career. They need to get as much as they can when they are still playing. I'd do the same and have no problem saying it.
